Hello, all! Doubt anyone could guess what today's mystery LP-under-the-cassettes is, so I'll just spill the beans right off the bat (to messily mix metaphors). It's U.K. band Mirkwood's self-titled LP, from 1973: www.discogs.com...

listener james from westwood:

Mixed metaphors, piping hot and in time for lunch!

Am I imagning thiss, or are we once again to enjoy the show w/ such an enviable broadcast hisstory?
Greets, Tony, the the metaphor mixmaster, ljfw.

Hello Tony, master of Cassettes and lHissteners!

Yvang, you rang?

Hiya, Sem!

"metaphor mixmaster" ... Ha! Good one

Tony Coulter:

Hiya, hiya, Yvang & L.O.T.!

Sem:

..had typed "methaphor mixmaster", but yikes! jumped right out at me.

Tony Coulter:

Unlike a lot of the outfits featured on Tape Hiss, The Scientific Americans would not have been at all out of place on college radio circa 1982. I wonder how much airplay they did get at the time....
Avatar 12:18pm
Tony Coulter:

Of course, cassettes were always at a disadvantage as far as getting airplay -- but they did have some vinyl singles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Stanley:

Tape Tzar Tony at the controls.
Avatar 12:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Stanley the Manley! Heya!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
WR:

I guess I would know it was a tape hiss day if I read the GTD daily email upon awakening.
Avatar 1:02pm
Tony Coulter:

WR! How are you, you mysterious organism?
Avatar 1:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Is anyone here familiar with Ottmar Liebert's solo stuff? I'm assuming it's nothing like this Red cassette.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
WR:

Who is the vocalist?
Avatar 1:13pm
Tony Coulter:

Elizabeth Yancy, who doesn't seem to have done anything else
Avatar 1:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Other than her stuff with Red, I mean -- there are other Red releases.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
TomDash:

Hey Tony - listening at work and loving the tape selections this week - right up my alley!
Avatar 1:17pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Tom! Glad you're listening!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
WR:

I wonder if you try contacting Liebert via his web site what the reaction would be to interest in his early work.
Avatar 1:22pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha! That would be interesting to find out....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
WR:

Don't know anything about him before today but seems he has had a significant career in new age flamenco.
Avatar 1:25pm
Tony Coulter:

"New Age Flamenco" ... the very words send a chill down my spine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
Cmurtha:

Hello everyone. That "red" tape's aura mocks me
Avatar 1:28pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Cmurtha! The cover of the Red cassette creates some odd optical effects, at least in person.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
WR:

This Objekt comp is fun. Wanna hear more by some of the bands. Sea Hags especially.
Avatar 1:45pm
Tony Coulter:

According to discogs, the track we heard is the only thing Sea Hags ever released -- tho, of course, they could have obscure cassette-only releases that haven't made it to discogs yet.
Avatar 1:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Although, wait, they do have a second track on the flip side of this cassette!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
WR:

These songs and those of The Scientific Americans are topical compendium of the times they came from, though some topics are still current.
Avatar 1:57pm
Tony Coulter:

Just looked up John Merrick, subject of the Love Dolls song a few tracks back: He was the Elephant Man
Avatar 2:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Perhaps I should have remembered that from the David Lynch movie...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
WR:

RE: Merrick, The Lynch movie or the play that for one run featured David Bowie.
Avatar 2:10pm
Tony Coulter:

True. Forgot about that!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
WR:

Easy to forget the Bowie / Merrick / Elephant Man connection since, AFAIR the is no generally available recording.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
WR:

Thought my phone had lost the stream again but noticed tape hiss still there, so they programmed that much silence after the Microdots tune?
Avatar 2:18pm
Tony Coulter:

They did!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:20pm
WR:

I'm extra chatty today because I'm on vacation and indulging myself of just sitting around ripping CDs and enjoying your show.
Avatar 2:24pm
Tony Coulter:

Come vacation in sunny Tape Hiss–land.
