John FFP-you probably know as much as I do about the Coronavirus outbreak of you've been paying attention to the news (because not that much is known). Basically, the main recommendations are isolating possible contacts for 14 days, and lots of hand washing. It seems the serious cases mostly affect the elderly or people with underlying medical problems (not so different from flu in that way)

Cmurtha: That sounds fascinating. Which years and regions does it involve?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
Cmurtha:

I focus only on the Istanbull Elites as I am interested in the texts they collected and their writings. The years are 1500-1720, though most of my source base is 16th and 17th century stuff.

@Cmurtha, I am still confused; Kemal Ataturk took power with attempts at secularism but both times I have stayed in Istanbul the muezzins still give you the early morning call.
🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
WR:

David, since you asked, GS for Japanese pop music in 60s referred to "group sounds" from their wikipedia page: 「グループ・サウンズ=不良」のイメージが強かった1960年代当時、数多のグループ・サウンズの中でザ.

Running that through Google translate and you can see it was a rock band style, image..
Avatar 🚂 4:38pm
βrian:

What, no foot rest jokes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
Cmurtha:

@brian he wanted to create a secular state on western lines. Which is to say, no religious law, separation where possible of church and state and placing the state at the top of the hierarchy. He never wanted to expunge al elements of Islam from his society and he knew that would also be impossible. He attacked certain elements of "popular" faith that he saw as backwards (visitation to tombs, sufi lodges) both of which trickled back over time. In the call to prayer he, for a time, had it said in Turkish, though that also reverted.

Cmurtha, yes there were still lines to be finished. I think from the airport into the centre. The Archaeology Museum was overwhelmed with items that were found when digging due to Istanbul's long history. Boats with wine amphoras and much more.
I was amazed that the city stretched out to the new airport on the Asian side.

David - truly one of the world greats
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
Webhamster Henry:

@David I perform kind of often, but not on the autoharp. I'm in a gamelan, so I play Sundanese gamelan instruments, and in another band where I play hammered dulcimer, melodica, glockenspiel and tenor recorders and sing a little. I play that melodica with a bluegrass pickup group every week too. They didn't like the autoharp so much!
  5:36pm

I like melodica but don’t associate it with bluegrass. I guess it could work like a harmonica.
