...their least important (Singles not yet on albums in the USA) - but great !
(Since the catalog went Digital w/ CDs - we've had the 'proper' UK versions - w/ non-album singles on Past Masters I & II)...
It was a Beatles endtimes Allen Klein cash in (their ripoff Manager that who was the real villain in their story - not Yoko) - & had no right to be as solid a collection as it was - w/ tunes from dif eras together...

We had the "Hey Jude"/"The Beatles Again" album when I was growing up. Ballad of John and Yoko is worth the price of admission!
Avatar 7:46pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Name changed to 'Hey Jude' - yes.
'Yellow Sub' is 1/2 Psych Era Beatles : much the same sessions as Pepper
- & 1/2 George Martin's film score music for 'Yellow Sub'.
Yeah - that's weird.
But - I LOVE Martin's score for the film - but have yet to communicate w/ ANYONE who agrees - just people who feel ripped off by the album - which I get...
Mystery Tour wasn't originally an album - but - a Double E.P. in the UK - & the US album has non-film trax...the exception to the UK versions being the original & frankly best way to go for Albums... Put it w/ 'Yellow Sub' tax - & you get a nice addendum to Pepper from same Psych era...
I realized one day talking about 45 Singles - that I don't remember EVER buying a new one in my life! By the time I got into collecting - yeah - albums...There were hand-me-downs & 2nd hand singles around - but that didn't happen w/ the Fabs...

@RevRab - have you heard the version of Ballad of J&Y on the new Abbey Road box set? It's an alternate take. The cool thing is that in the banter before the track begins, John sez something like "Are you ready Ringo"? and Paul replies something like "OK George"... Pretty cute.
Avatar 7:51pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sure. NonAlbum trax - Singles !
...Now all on 'Past Masters'...
In original UK versions - Beatles didn't like to put Singles on Albums. They were maximum value & productivity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
coelacanth∅:

it is excellent music, the yellow sub stuff; and i'm sure Evan Crankshaw agrees too...and lots of others of the wfmu persuasion.
- but i wouldn't buy an album just for that.

When I bought Yellow Submarine -- again, my first ever Beatles purchase -- I was all like "What the HELL Beatles, didn't you write 'Don't Let Me Down'?!? How you gonna let me down with this one-sided LP?!?" etc.
Avatar 7:53pm
tim abdellah:

It bugs me that if you go to those Past Masters tracks on Spotify, you can only get the stereo versions. I put a playlist together recently of Beatles singles, and could rarely find an original mono 45 mix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
Gary:

But Northern Song, holy shit. And then that score just got its hooks into me over time
Avatar 7:54pm

I'll just need email addresses, generally use WeTransfer workswell, but the free version often requires splitting albums up. Just sent a buddy The CompleteMingus Atlantic sessions, and started sending him The Complete Atlantic Ornette Coleman sessions.

regarding spotify (@8.20) the audio quality is (optionally)better with a paid account.
...also, there are no guarantees as to how long anything will be available for.

Amazon just launched a streaming service, also supposed to have good audio quality. Now I'm using TIDAL, the Geek streaming services of choice (supposed to have best audio quality, at least until Amazon, if their promo stuff is true)

First, Gary, great show. You are a maestro of music programming. I heard most of the show while preparing and having family dinner but will be relistening a few times. Now skipping around for some parts I missed. One point that maybe you mentioned in your mic break but I missed, submundo has 13 recordings on bandcamp that are all free or pay what you want. I Like their description: "Submundo is a brazilian secret society which gathers every six (6) months to make experimental electronic music and barbecue from dusk till dawn."
