Hiya, Stanley and John! Thanks, Stanley. It was quite a shock while innocently making my lunch.

when you hear the first seconds of guitar and immediately know: this is a great song
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Guido from Cologne:

No, in this case the Slits song is about Keith Levene (from PiL)!

"Viv Albertine said in her 2014 book ‘Clothes, Clothes, Clothes, Music, Music, Music, Boys, Boys, Boys’ that this song was based around a few lines she wrote about Keith Levene’s drug habit, and was repurposed as a round, as the band “remembered doing in school”."

Afternoon! Coincidentally just watched Sophia Coppola's MARIE ANTOINETTE for the first time, and was delighted to realize the title character's mother was played by Marianne Faithfull!

Who's ready for THE MARATHON???

(I,. for one, do NOT want to see that photo behind the black bar....)
  3:21pm P-90:

Got a friend who is tight with Marianne, recorded and toured with her, etc. Lots of unrepeatable stories...
  3:21pm William Main:

Someone should set to music this poem Victim by Thomn Gunn. Yes, it's about Nancy Spungen.

Oh dead punk lady with the knack
Of looking fierce in pins and black,
The suburbs wouldn’t want you back.

You wished upon a shooting star
And trusted in your wish as far
As he was famous and bizarre.

The band broke up, its gesture made.
And though the music stopped, you stayed.
Now it was the sharp things he played:

Needles and you, not with the band,
Till something greater than you planned
Opened erect within his hand.

You smiled. He pushed it through your shirt
Deep in your belly, where it hurt.
You turned, and ate the carpet’s dirt.

And then not understanding why
He watched out with a heavy eye
The several hours you took to die.

The news was full of his fresh fame.
He OD’d ending up the same.
Poor girl, poor girl, what was your name?

I seem to recall, back in the 60s or 70s, Timothy Leary testifying before Congress that drug abuse is a medical problem, not a legal one. Imagine the suffering that would have been avoided if people had listened to him. It's only taken about 50 years to come around to what he was saying. Even now we're not really there.

Great idea for a show. This hits home because I know a lot of people who've had heroin addictions...some died, some got clean. I tend to think of heroin in a different category than other drugs, because of how many people I know who've died due to heroin ODs. I didn't realize heroin is often laced with other drugs. Thanks for the enlightenment.

I have been fighting against the drug war for over 20 years. I am a member of the Drug Policy Alliance and the Marijuana Policy Project. If people want to help, these organizations are out there.
Part of the problem is the idea that the government should take care of people. For many, punishing other people for their substance use is, in fact, "taking care of them". So, think about this the next time you wish that the government would take care of people's problems. The definition of "taking care" is whatever the government says it is.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Handy Haversack:

Living in poverty is treated as a crime that often carries the death penalty here in the land of opportunity, and being a woman, being an artist, being a person of color -- these are all additional reasons to punish as far as the system is concerned.

My dad did drugs with Billie Holiday. Gave her all his pot when he was drafted for WWII.

His drug lecture to me was: "Don't smoke too much pot. All my friends died from heroin."

Of my friends who died early, I'd say for nearly all of them it was due to alcohol.
  3:52pm 12 cc:

Strange Fruit always brings tear to my eye. The best that I heard was a DJ several years ago who played it back-to-back with a cut from the SNCC Freedom Singers. What strikes me as sad these days is that many listeners probably don't know what SNCC was and how historic the organization was.

  3:54pm sufferwords:

anyone that has friends that partake needs to have Narcan available- especially in the phentanyl era
  3:55pm JakeGould:

@Stanley: The crazy thing about the war on drugs? Alcohol is actually more damaging to the body than marijuana. So when you hear folks say that pot can cause irreparable brain damage, they are the same folks who look at teens going blackout drunk and just say, “They’re just being teens!”

Alcohol is the worst, moist commonly available drug anyone can buy anywhere. But that is a tangent I don’t want to go on.

  4:03pm JakeGould:

@morphe': I have no idea on specifics, but NYCs efforts to help the homeless and drug affected are really superficial at best. The city is more focused on pushing the homeless away when private efforts to count the homeless happen and pushing “Meatless Mondays” and campaigns against “Sugary Drinks” than dealing with real issues.

Great show Sheila. I'm struck by how if you were to take away the overarching theme of this show, and take away your commentary, we're left with a pretty good overview of great twentieth century popular music. Which speaks to the fact that the history of humanity is also the history of intoxication, and often the history of the kinds of trauma that underlie all that stuff- the trauma that we collectively, particularly in American society, pretend isn't there (as the woman in the clip you played from the horizons conference touched on). Hope that makes sense? Also: Etta James fuck yeah!

Sheila! This is so important. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. Fentanyl killed my boyfriend last year. Wfmu has been a constant support for me, but you've gone above and beyond. This is the work of harm reduction. And I do hope those who don't understand pay attention!!

Those laws which hold individuals who give others drugs criminally responsible are so upsetting, since using together is in fact encouraged as harm reduction, and cops are guaranteed keepers of overdose reversal kits.

The message that we want to make life safer for users and that we must treat them with respect is crucial.

And talk to those in your communities, schools or places of work about holding narcan training and keeping life saving drugs on hand. And the playlist is well curated to boot. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  5:10pm JakeGould:

@Fox: I always question those “We drank beer/vodka…” tales in the context of water not being clean. The reason being is nobody could just drink that much alcohol regularly without some serious health issues.

For example the Soviet tales of soldiers just endlessly drinking vodka during war because of the lack of water.

The evidence I have read explains that many distilleries just filtered water as part of their process. And as such they would provide cleaned water to people who wanted it. Sometimes in the same bottles they bottled booze in. Thus the urban legend of Soviet troops during World War II “surviving” on just vodka instead of water. Whatever they drank was in a bottle that looked like vodka, but it was mostly water.

Ignatatus - listen back to Sheila's monologues. its exactly the circumstances you are talking about that she/we are hoping to change. give the book "chasing the scream" a read - please

Surely the attitudes & actions towards AIDS were parallel to the Drug War.

Hey Sheila! Tons of respect for you and to you. Also, judges suburban kids really should get smacked upside the head. I mean I don’t know if you forgave them but still…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

& ever notice economics & the price tag are the dead end value of every conversation about anything...
  5:35pm JakeGould:

@ignatatus666: Lack of needle exchange and such is what helped AIDS blow up. Just look at the history of Drumf’s second in command who caused an HIV epidemic in Indiana in 2011.

Thank you Sheila for this show and highlighting such an important subject, something we can all relate to or have experience with one way or another. Through compassion and understanding we will overcome.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Theolonius:

I've been running errands & catching this show in pieces as I streamed it. Looking forward to hearing it in its entirety over the weekend. I'm almost at a loss for words for the level of compassion and sincerity Sophisticated Boom Boom exhibits. This is more than just a music station. WFMU is the way radio should be!!! Thank you Sheila B! Thank you! <3 <3 <3
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Handy Haversack:

Just a quick note that IN ADDITION to the crucial work of care and advocacy, Sheila, the music is, like every single wonderful week, still swingin' and singin' and making marvels real. So -- you know, thanks. As always.

What do people think of NA and Nar-Anon? Are they helpful?
  5:45pm JakeGould:

@ignatatus666: I think you might have interesting info to share if you just toned it down. Sheila has like 18 minutes, please.

“The man who just spoke doesn’t go home with these people to say there is no downward spiral etc” Yadda, yada… Give it a rest. Drug use and unsafe drug use are two different things.

@HakeGould go away with your stalking me. You already got me banned from another program. I’m asking you nicely to not interact with me.
  5:49pm JakeGould:

FWIW, as much as I overshare at times in life and even on these comments I choose not to share some if the extremely dark drug and disease stuff that has happened in my direct family. So yes, a very close family member of mine died of AIDS. Do I wish to share the details to prove something to someone like “ignatatus666?” Utterly no.

Boundaries, limits, and respect.
  5:50pm JakeGould:

@ignatatus666: I am not stalking you. I am aware of your behavior.

“You already got me banned from another program.” I did no such thing. If I happened to be on that board at the time, don’t blame me.

Thank you Sistah for your passion and attention to this issue. Another contributing factor to addiction is the gamut of poorly-addressed mental health problems. Fabulous show!
