@Ike: Being French, I have mostly French neighbors. So they'll call the cops on me even when I'm not there, then have weekday parties jumping and shouting to soccer anthem songs, because they earn more than I do, so cops work for them, not me. My next door neighbors are really cool though, much into dabke. They're Tunisian, not French. Not a coincidence

@coel: those who think of themselves as French (a puzzling thing to me) sure do. I think the real issue is why they think the cops work for them exclusively. It's more class than race here, though race is widely understood to imply class

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
fred:

@coel: here it's all about your lineage, or the brunt force of money, however you got it. Come to think of it, it's all about force
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
coelacanth∅:

interesting,fred.
my explanation, in my situations, has always been that people are not raised now to know how to communicate with their...shipmates (! -we *are* all on this big boat together, after all) -as generations before them, and moreso before me, were.
and also raised with no emphasis on giving a shit, and to be selfish and complacent... and people are tired -exhausted...so the easy way is to pick up the phone and call the cops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
Ike:

That could be read as a passive-aggressive comment.

i've had neighbors who were deliberately unfriendly toward me from the moment they moved in, having not met me and having no knowledge of me. i know, where i am now, it could be racism; but in the past it's happened with folks similarly colored as i.
either way it's a combination of fear and bigotry.

  1:53pm
JakeGould:

I lived on the edge of a very gentrified part of Brooklyn for 13 years. Only 3 neighbors. Most were snooty or obnoxious regardless of race. And my landlord considered me a “troublemaker” because I did “crazy” things like climb up on the roof to unclog drains, show people how to fix leaky faucets on their own and I even changed hallway lightbulbs on my own. Such a “troublemaker.”
