Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm chris_in_space:

Super cool to have you playing records today, Ira! Thanks for filling in.

WFMU got me through 9/11, and I'm glad it's around now during this tough time.
Swag For Life Member 12:06pm 12539:

Thanks for coming in, Ira!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm David (in London):

This is helping already Ira.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Kat in Chicago:

Nice to hear you, Ira.
  12:07pm Ochre Ogre:

Hi Ira, wow that sounds surreal like NY after 9/11. Haven't heard this since 197...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Irene Trudel:

YES! Perfect choosing Dan Hicks, Ira! Love this song so much. Striking it Rich was the first album of his I discovered right out of high school. Reminds me, I still owe you that WFMU session he did for me back in 2005. Maybe while I’m forced to stay home I'll dig it up for you.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Irene Trudel:

I live on a busy avenue in Manhattan's UWS. Super quiet, very little traffic, car or foot, broken by sirens ever so often (which admittedly make me jump more than usual now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm David (in London):

@Handy - You haven't been forced back in to Google Hangouts again have you?
  12:10pm Matt in Carrboro:

Thanks for spinning records for me and my elementary kids, Ira! We love the Monkees (and their tv show)! Stay safe up there.
  12:10pm Rachel Bo Bachel:

What a treat to have Ira K today! And thanks for the Monkees! <3

Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Ira:

Good afternoon, everyone!
  12:13pm Frank Zaatar:

This was the first Monkees song I ever liked. Back when I was too cool for the Monkees.
  12:13pm David K:

Goin' Down! -
my absolute favorite Monkees tune -
also maybe the most obscure. thx much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Handy Haversack:

@DIL -- no, though the whole damn system went down (when I accidentally unplugged it!). Was/am 100 Percent Winging!
Avatar 12:14pm Jeff Conklin:

I'm here for a Hot Tuna jam. Hi, Ira.
Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Ira:

I HATED Goin' Down when it came out. I was too square for the Monkees getting too cool. Didn't like Micky's curly hair either, which was surely self-loathing on my part.
Avatar 12:15pm Jason The K:

I third or fourth that Goin' Down is a Monkees fave of mine too.
  12:15pm Jay in the Lou:

Afrofunk is the exalted sound.
Avatar 12:16pm Jason The K:

@Ira You first wave Monkees kids weren't scatting?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm David (in London):

Handy, you "accidentally" unplugged it. Thus hastening your return to FMU... Oops, silly me.
  12:17pm ?:

Hi Ira, Off to a great start there. Leslie and Frank here in Somerville are tuned. WMBR and WZBC are shut down because they are in school buildings.
Avatar 12:18pm jt:

So easy to scare myself these days.. great song, Thanks DJ Ira for opening my ears to this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Thanks for holding it down, Ira!
  12:18pm Frankem:

Ira - Enjoying the show.

Irene - missing you on WFMU!
  12:19pm David K:

sorry Ira, Goin' Down was a whole 'nother direction for them - jazz!
& the video was awesome with analog effects - mirroring and multiplying... I was blown away when I saw it on their TV show back in the sixties

Happy to be under house arrest with you spinning the discs. Looking forward to a rocking & interesting show!
Avatar 12:20pm Mike & Dusty:

so glad to be attached to Ira, ’FMU and these sounds via terrestrial radio in the East Village, where for 22 years i’ve (apropos of nothing much) been assiduously picking up my dogs’ poop
  12:20pm mario:

Hi Ira!
I'm a fan of yours and I'm happy to hear from you - and good music- on the radio. It's not frequent (I have to admit that it is the first time)! I was at the Cabaret Sauvage with my daughter Sara two years ago. What a show! I loved that crazy second part of the performance even if the first one was very good, nice and cool.
Hope to hear you again very soon.
In Paris we try to not loose our minds - we can't quit our apartments and the days are so strange . The world doesn't seem to turn very round. But I hope better days for all of us.
All the best,
Mario
  12:21pm Rachel Bo Bachel:

Really enjoying this set. Very much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm David (in London):

Snoochie - A whole of lot staying home and writing blog posts about statistical process control really. With Ken, and now Ira, and a pot of tea, that's actually much more enjoyable than it might sound...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm streetwaves:

Is this what all Hot Tuna sounds like?
Avatar 12:30pm Snoochienucci:

@DIL sounds plenty enjoyable to me. im kinda doing the same except the blogs post are switched out for 3d models of kitchens. and the tea is swapped out for espresso. Either way cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm LW Rhino:

Hey Greg, how things in zone 5 ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, Greg -- sounded great! I sent that Fucked Up album to a friend, who also dug muchly. Kate looked up at one point early and said, "Wait, am I really hearing House of Pain?"! Super fun.
Avatar 12:31pm Jason The K:

This might be my favorite Ella tune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Beast of Boonton:

@streetwaves - try some electric Hot Tuna sometime
Avatar 12:32pm Snoochienucci:

@Streetwaves not all, but that is def there sound. From their first album, which was a live set. They do electric too. had a period where they were kinda heavier rock also
  12:32pm yerfriendpaul:

@David K - Well, glad to have you here. But am I being slow on the uptake here? Do we know each other?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, Ira fits right into our strange WFMU family. Probably difficult for him to do a regular show due to touring. But I'm grateful for today's fill-in!

  12:53pm yerfriendpaul:

Yep, quiet here too
  12:53pm JakeGould:

@IreneTrudel: I explored Manhattan over the weekend and went specifically to Times Square, Midtown and Bryant Park on Sunday. Deader than dead. So quiet and calm. Literally peaceful and I never thought I would experience it being peaceful in Midtown ever.

And on 42nd Street next to Bryant Park an older woman pushing a shopping cart needed some help with directions to the 1 train. I pointed to Time Square. Traffic (foot and cars) was dead.

Then when she walked away it dawned on me how crazy it was to see a real human doing basic domestic errands in the middle of midtown.

@melinda: Creepy and pleasant. In Midtown it was pleasant since that is such a nasty part of the city. It was creepy when I walked around TriBeCa, Chinatown and Greenwich Village. Seeing those areas dead creeped me out.

Also the few stores that were open were creepy.

@David K - Ah, this again. That's David in London. Once I figured out that the app vs website meant that I had a non-unique ID, I brought in the brackets, so I am David (in London). The fox is me, and that other guy isn't. He's one of the other Davids in London. Confused yet?

@D(IL) I'm in JC, right next to WFMU!

@Handy if you are still here - is Jorma actually your cousin?
Avatar 1:06pm Jason The K:

Robyn Hitchcock is doing a live video stream tonight for charity. Surely the right crowd for this. www.stageit.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm steveo:

Hmm, Handy, I hope you will find something cushy to aid your standing or otherwise adapt. also, it takes about 60% of my mental processes to remember that Haversack is not a town in upstate new york
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm steveo:

or maybe NJ? (who needs a house out in Haversack? Is that all you get for your money?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm David (in London):

@steveo - I feel a rerecording of the Fountains of Wayne's 'Hackensack' coming on...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Irene Trudel:

Already bought my "ticket", Jason. Robyn and Emma are doing a live set to benefit the East Nashville neighborhood devastated by the tornado.

@melinda: Crazy. But in NYC I hear people who are servers, bartenders and such saying “It stinks that Mayor de Blasio is forcing us to close…” But guess what? Ain’t nobody going out anyway. Either pull the plug now or wait a few days until the message gets out: The city is socially dead.
  1:19pm Ochre Ogre:

@Ira- All this isolation stuff makes me think of Syd Barrett or Rubber Room by Parter Wagoner, wink nudge.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Handy Haversack:

@snooch (1:10): I have never met him, though both my sisters have. I used to be fairly in touch with his brother. I should check out that book!

His mother and my dad were very close, lived together as kids after my dad was orphaned. I managed to get out to CA to visit her before she died, not long after my dad died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Mick:

Irene your point about not compulsively checking the panic-inducing news is well taken! And the Sun Ra/Danny Ray Thompson tribute goes a long way in the 'building community out of isolation' department
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):
