Tony Coulter:

Most of my shows feature ugly music by obscure weirdos, but today it's ... PRETTY MUSIC BY FAMOUS PEOPLE. Expect lots of classic rawk and soft rock from the '60s and '70s.

We recently watched the David Crosby documentary. Pretty good doc about a pretty messed up person, by his own admission...

Heya, L.O.T.! Some people seem to really hate him, which I've never quite understood. But then again, I haven't seen that documentary....

Hiya, Bob!

TC - In it, Crosby says at one point that all the musicians he used to play with don't speak to him anymore. He's got that kind of history...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm

the wfmu community (show hosts and commenters) have a thriving hate David Crosby bandwagon. the sheeple have spoken.

@ Yvang: No, Jandek, no. And just to be clear: today's show is all about pretty music by famous people -- not famous music by pretty people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
coelacanth∅:

pretty people make inferior music. the statistics don't lie!

So if I understand this include obscure pretty music by famous ugly people.

hiya coel!
Avatar 12:42pm
Tony Coulter:

I know coel is pulling my leg, but just to clarify, here's what's allowed on today's show:

1) Pretty music by famous people who are also pretty.

2) Pretty music by famous people who everyone but their mothers consider ugly.

But, of course, physical beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I, for one, consider Janis Joplin to be hot.
Avatar 12:51pm
Kay:

I noticed at least one WFMU DJ played a rebroadcast of a show that aired in 2019. Is this show a rerun? Hope all are well and not hamstrung by social distancing orders.
Avatar 12:52pm

Hiya, Kay! Nope, this show is not a rerun. The station is working hard to get everyone up to speed to be able to do their shows from home.

BTW, the Buffalo Springfield turns up in the David Crosby documentary. Stephen Stills in both suit and cowboy hat. Very dashing, sartorially...
Avatar 1:07pm

I wonder if the Raiders had to cram themselves back into their mothballed military outfits at some point -- say, when they hit the nostalgia circuit

@ Coel: So ... pretty music makes you want to take a shower?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
coelacanth∅:

yes pretty music makes me feel dirty.
it's all relative.
Avatar 1:22pm
Listening Out There:

With the Raiders and the nostalgia circuit, they couldn't hold a candle to The Beach Boys. That's gone on, and on, and etc. Something of the Beach Boys might fit into this very show... :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm

i'd bet most people under the age of, maybe 20 have never heard of the majority of these artists though.
Avatar 1:53pm

Nah, I'd say they would probably have heard many of them, from their parents, even if only in the background.
Avatar 1:53pm
Tony Coulter:

You know, in the car, or whatever....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
Cmurtha:

I dunno about that coela, I think zoomers as they are disparagingly called have a good introduction to a fair amount of these bands. From the playlists of classic/mixed radio stations to video games a good deal of these are fairly represented in things they are exposed to. They also have their family for exposure. Even people around my age (US 90S KIDS!) who overwhelmingly only listened to the top of the charts garbage knew at least a song by most of these people
  1:54pm
Dean:

"The first and second Gymnopédies were arranged by Dick Halligan for the group Blood, Sweat & Tears under the title "Variations on a Theme by Erik Satie" on the group's eponymous album, released in 1968." -- Wikipedia entry for "Gymnopédies"
Avatar 1:56pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Ah, yes -- you're right. And, of course, I should have remembered -- I'll be playing that album shortly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
Cmurtha:

Also, some bands just have weird staying power where you have younger people get obsessed with them for reasons I don't understand (Beatles girls, Zepplin dudes). So you never know where ones music exploration will begin. Like for me Hair metal, Dio, and Frankzappa is really what got me into music and exploring more music genres. Now I am all over the damn place. Before that I was mostly listening to "oldies" stations in the car or picking up random stuff from TV etc.
  1:58pm
Dean:

Derek & the Dominos' "Thorn Tree in the Garden" gonna make an appearance?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm

Weird to think back on that time, That's also around when my edgy atheist-libertarian phase was coming to an end. Thank God.
Avatar 2:00pm

Ah, excellent Doors choice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
Cmurtha:

I feel like the doors get a lot of contrarian hate compared to other bands in their time period that get (overhyped?). IMO they are the best of the 27 club death hype bands, I don't know if I'd call Jim and Amazing poet, but his lyrics work great for their music and their organist is boss.

Tony @1.53, & Cmurtha -maybe, but my experience says no. i don't know everyone.
i could run down the playlist one-by-one and i'll still say over 50% (the majority) are bands most (the "great"majority) of people under 20 have never heard OF. they may have heard most of them incidentally in the car, before plugging their earbuds in, but never heard the artist names.
- certainly in "yuppie-america"; certainly in "black", hispanic and asian america. certainly in "country-america".
but that still leaves lots of people.
...and i was responding to the statement of 99% having "heard of", after all -not having "heard".

I've not read all the comments to see if this was already discussed but this could be a soundtrack to ease the transition of the many over 60 or 65 who are said to be not treated (no respirator) due to supply shortage in Spain and Italy. A situation that could hit the USA if not successful at "flattening the curve".
