Hi all. Busy with work as usual for me. GTD playing when not in conference calls. Coffee break gives me time to comment. Doug, your playing that San Lucas Band cut reminded me of a day long ago when I assisted on a record fair in New Orleans. Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie and I got into good natured discussion about traditional music field recordings. Strachwitz said that recording was not representative of a tradition, but the result of a producer that looked for the wackiest out of tune stuff he could record. That there were other bands in that area who were not so untempered, not so cacophonous. Being a fan of Albert Ayler, I was perfectly happy to have spotlight shined on the cacophony. He said others in the tradition were being misrepresented. Great record fair banter. Memorable day.

Welcome aboard, WR! And thanks for that inside story on the San Lucas Band from Chris Strachwitz! My WFMU colleague Rex Doane used to work with Strachwitz. Rex had some stories about that deal...

I used to dance quite wildly to benga, soukous etc when young and later when I was older, was taught by an African friend to keep keep the feet to a short little shuffle but move the top half to conserve energy. Over the course of an evening he'd get rather drunk and towards the end his 'dancing' consisted of hardly moving, can in hand, eyes half closed and nodding his head to the music. He said that in his mind he was dancing like he was young again.
