Hi Danny and cool blues!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
Little Danny:

@Evan: so the deal with Recchion is that even by the '80s he was manipulating/remixing tapes and album tracks by people like Martin Denny, Ferrante & Teicher into real cool original ambient compositions

i was fortunate when a"friendly acquaintance" helped me set up my computer, that was a gift and i hadn't touched for 11 months in 2011, he set me up with pandora (which had a better reputation then) and demonstrated by making me a Tom Recchion station, among others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Little Danny:

Heya J2tK and doc!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Little Danny:

Both chresti and franco know Tom Recchion btw. I'm just a fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Franco Twinkie:

Hi Danny, Tom was the first guy in L.A. to have a radio program where exotica was seriously considered.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
coelacanth∅:

Franco when was that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Apparently Kamasi Washington was in a more recent incarnation of Mr Wilson’s orchestra according to Discogs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Franco Twinkie:

Late '70's - early '80's. It was on KPFK on Monday nights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

I would love to have heard on of those shows, Franco. Recchion's appreciation of exotica was way before most

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm

...i also wonder if there were exotica segments on the "elevator music" radio stations my father used to listen to.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
chresti:

Ask Tom if he has recordings of that time @Franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Franco Twinkie:

Coel, KPFK is notoriously sloppy with their archive, but for the audio spelunker it can be a real treat. Actually, now that we all have more time in our hands, some digging might be in order.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:25pm

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
chresti:

No, Franco and his dad did the house, at least parts of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Little Danny:

@TDK60: It was recorded in Arizona, where that "twangy" Duane Eddy sound was partially borne (in addition to Nashville of course). Not sure if was a bari guitar or not
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
coelacanth∅:

weren't "baggies" a type of bathing suit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Franco Twinkie:

It's funny, I see him often enough that we don't really talk about that stuff. Our conversations are usually about mundane every day stuff like health and exercise. But when we are crate digging side by side at the flea market we talk about music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Little Danny:

I was just gonna query this list about the meaning of "baggies" in the context of surf slang
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Franco Twinkie:

Baggies are now called board shorts.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
coelacanth∅:

in surfin' usa they say "you see 'em wearin' their baggies"
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:32pm

Maybe baggies are the ones that balloon out when you get in the water.

i just remember (with fondness!) the opening to some surf type movie my sister was watching, 100 years ago, and when that line came up in that song the screen filled up with a dancing bikini bottom (with a woman inside it) so associated that but never actually knew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Little Danny:

Thanks Ignore F, and thanks for noticing! I live for a solid segue
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:37pm

it was a bikini but was loose, so maybe it would balloon out in the water

Coel, you just might be talking about How To Stuff A Wild Bikini! My sister and I went to see a double bill of that and Go-Go Mania in 1965. The bikini bottom what orange and animated if I remember.

The best baggies were made with garish flowery fabric, or a solid color with white horizontal stripes on the bottom of the legs.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
coelacanth∅:

Franco i remember that title. my older sister watched all of them.
but it wasn't animated, and in the next line a different dancing bikini replaced her in the shot, of a different style - which is why i decided these were types of bathing suits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

Yes! Jimmy Savile, with bleached blond hair. I've never seen the movie again, but I remember him introducing all the bands.

I'm finding lots of mid-'96 references, which suggests that Werner could have been the guy, but I kinda doubt it would have cought on within months. And yet a Billboard article from '95 gives Werner credit, but also notes that Esquivel released an album in '94 called SABPM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Matt from New Orleans:

This is a mod jazz classic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm

  11:14pm

A '97 book, Cocktail Parties for Dummies (I'm embarrassed to have typed that), claims, "Space age bachelor pad music” was coined by artist Byron Werner of Los Angeles in the mid-80s to describe a genre of Eisenhower-Kennedy era instrumental pop."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Little Danny:

Darn tootin' Matt. There are a coupla killer versions of "Feeling Good" done in the mod jazz manner from the mid- and late '60s.
  11:15pm
Dean:

So, we're back to mid-'80s, and Werner again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm

I recall it seeming like a useful descriptor back in the day as all of "that music" was still novel to me. Now it's dated hokum.
