Monsieur Doumani: Edgy New Roots Music From Cyprus, Recorded at WOMEX 2019

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

The politically outspoken Cyprus-based trio Monsieur Doumani blends traditional influences with contemporary elements, both musical and topical. They've certainly struck a chord: The band's latest album Angathin topped the Transglobal world music DJ chart, they've won critics' awards in Italy and Germany and three award nominations from UK-based Songlines magazine. And they showcased at October's influential WOMEX World Music Expo in Finland. Join us on Saturday for Rob's interview with Monsieur Doumani and their WOMEX EBU radio studio session!

Check out Monsieur Doumani's excellent third album Angathin as well as their earlier releases Sikoses and Grippy Grappa: https://monsieurdoumani.bandcamp.com/

Here's a link to the Arts Covid Big List/ – an extensive list of Relief and Resources For Artists, Freelancers, and Non-Profits: http://artscovid.org/

Also: BRIC has created a great resource list for artists during the viral crisis:

How the Arts and Culture Sector Can Prepare for the Coronavirus in the United States

As we take heightened precautions to support public health initiatives, including temporarily closing our doors, we want to maintain our unwavering support of the artistic and creative community and ensure that you continue to thrive. To that end, we have compiled a list of shared resources from local and national arts and culture organizations.

These resources offer assistance, such as financial support and opportunities for artists to continue to express their creative potential during these difficult times. They should not be mistaken for public health information distributed by city and state authorities.

In the coming days and weeks, finding ways to support one another will become especially crucial. At BRIC, we reaffirm our commitment to support visual artists, performers, and media makers as we unite Brooklyn through art and creativity, together, to build community and make change. We hope you will find the links below to be of use to you and your creative community as we all navigate the impact of the novel Coronavirus/COVID-19.

We will continue to add new links and resources over the coming weeks. Please check our blog for updates, or follow BRIC on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @bricbrooklyn.

Thanks Zydeco Phil! The Okinawan traditional music and the big neo-folk movement and folk / crossover movement there is quite interesting. There's a British writer named Paul Fisher who has an online shop called Farside which is a good English-language source on the music. He used to write for fRoots magazine (now defunct) and also does a show on Resonance FM in London, at least I think he still does...

More Indian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm
Rob W:

Thanks Marie! Music from Rajasthan is really special indeed. The musicians all come from a musician caste, the history is complicated, they have faced lots of discrimination through the centuries, but the music is wonderful. And yes, it is kind of a nice vibe for the moment. Actually won't be getting to more Indian music today because the show is pretty set, but you might like a session I recorded in Europe this past fall with musicians from Rajasthan, master fiddler Lakha Khan and his son, it's here: wfmu.org... . Thanks!

No kidding Daisy! There are some interesting twists on the traditions that you can explore. I don't know if I should out him but one of our commenters played in a band called Annabouboula that took Greek roots in new directions back in the 80s and 90s! Others worth a google: Kristi Stassinopoulou, Mavrika (based in London, I think with connections to Cyprus), Nikos Papazoglou, and the unusual Australia-based duo Xylouris White with lute from Crete and avant-rock drumming.

Thanks again everyone. One closing production note: You may have heard me say "this week" a couple times in reference to the recent passings of Manu Dibango and Arlus Mabélé but they both actually passed away last week of course. Anyway thank you all so much, everyone take care, be well and stay well!
