Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
Handy Haversack:

I use a marine radio frequently, and you get to hear some pretty nutty things on it since it can pick up the whole harbor, if the broadcasting transmitter is strong enough -- and ocean-going ships have *powerful* transmitters. And, you know, tend to come from all sorts of places.

Well, all sorts of coastal places.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm
Handy Haversack:

Wow, mariano, bookmarked that site for later messing about!

@TDK60: you know, I don't know! The marine radio uses a bunch of dedicated channels. There are three regions: US/Canada/ROW. And in each region certain channels have specific designations and restrictions (e.g., channel 16 in the U.S. is the Coast Guard's; in NY Harbor, channel 13 is used for bridge-to-bridge communication; in most other places, channel 9).

I would think on shortwave you'd be more likely to get the NWS marine weather broadcasts, which is a whole separate band on the receiver.

I don't know enough about shortwave to answer any better than that, I think, but I will look through my radio's instructions to see if that can shed any light!

Handy - that shortwave site is crazy, especially once you start messing with the controls. You're liable to get Col. Kurtz narrating his latest nightmare, lol! Plus you can record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
Crudbringer:

OMG so glad I happened to glance over here when you mentioned that shortwave site @TDK60! That is the weird shit I need!
Avatar 5:11pm

Crud. I haven't listened in a long while. I think it's just one person's digest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
Handy Haversack:

@mariano I had it playing on top of this track for several minutes before I realized that *two* tabs were making sounds!

Uh, apparently I really enjoy static.

Talk about muddy speaking ghosts through my machine!

It's from the Santa Cruz area, the shortwave radio site.
