These virus days make me appreciate electronic, noise and drone music much more.
  12:45am
JakeGould:

I meant to say minimal. Not noise. Still have issues with noise.
Avatar 12:47am
sv:

yeah, pure noise only does it for me in short bursts or when it's added to something else that isn't pure noise
Avatar 12:47am
sv:

even if it's just drone or a thin strand of melody
  12:49am
JakeGould:

Knew some noise musicians in Chicago and they were kinda annoying. But hey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50am
chresti:

Haha
Avatar 12:50am
sv:

yeah, i could see that
Avatar 12:51am
sv:

i guess my main noise exception would be kevin drumm, but even with him i tend towards his dronier stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am
chresti:

I know someone that has played with noise bands, now he'd rather play old folk songs.
  12:53am
bren:

hi all
Avatar 12:54am
sv:

hello bren!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am
Scott Williams:

There's value in noise, its textures and densities (as Varese called it). No one likes all noises. But noise is an absolutely valid musical component
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am
coelacanth∅:

i like a lot of noise music, but yeah it's not pure noise. there are rhythms and pitch changes and maybe other sounds. pure noise is just - pure noise? ...i don't know what pure noise is!
i mean i've heard it but i don't come across it that often, and i'm often looking into new noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57am
coelacanth∅:

...(and what Scott said)
Avatar 12:58am
sv:

scott, that's such a good way of putting it - i really appreciate noise as a component, but not as the sole feature, i guess. i don't have a hunger for harsh noise walls, though more power to you if you do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00am
coelacanth∅:

one thing i can't stand...and i've turned off, as fast as i could, even some of my favorite wfmu shows because of it - is very high frequency.
Avatar 1:01am
sv:

yeah, i feel that. those releases from ryoji ikeda or other glitch people from back around the turn of the century that just feature extremely high frequency compositions ain't my cup of tea, though i do find their effects on the ears fascinating [if unpleasant]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02am
mariano:

Love that station ID.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02am
Scott Williams:

yeah, harsh power electronics don't feel right to me (I also vaguely suspect violent, malicious, or petulant intent...) I go more for the naturally generated stuff. Call me old-fashioned!
Avatar 1:03am
sv:

right on, scott, i couldn't agree more
Avatar 1:04am
sv:

thanks, mariano! i had fun making it :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04am
Andrew Waterloo:

That early Prurient stuff that was basically microphone feedback
Avatar 1:05am
sv:

yeah, i like the idea of that stuff but in practice it doesn't do it for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06am
chresti:

I like some noise in a song, and what Scott said. I like the electro-acoustic sounds.
  1:07am
jonny:

SV...wax...I was involved in a classic 1991 digital movie...an early internet format...called...Wax or the Discovery of Television Among the Bees...anyways check it out...wax requests:wax and wane by Cocteau Twins...or Mexico wax solvent by The Fall...sticky resin syrup...bright glorious yellow earth...multiply expand...
Avatar 1:07am
sv:

i will say that prurient is an amazing performer - i saw him open for tim hecker when i was sick a few years back, so i'd been taking sudafed for a few days and was feeling vertiginous and paranoid. really worked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07am
Andrew Waterloo:

For me, some of it requires the live component.. then there are times when I am surprisingly entranced by something..
Avatar 1:08am
sv:

jonny, that sounds RIGHT up my alley. will be looking into it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08am
coelacanth∅:

i agree with that also Scott. (but then i'm very into musique concréte)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10am
coelacanth∅:

what about Oren Ambarchi (sp?), Keith Rowe, Daniel Menche, yellow swans...i feel like if you like Kevin Drumm you'd like at least some of their stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10am
Scott Williams:

the piano overtones on this NIN are beautiful - classic sympathetic use of orthodox "unwanted" sound
Avatar 1:10am
spodiodi:

first i've heard this
Avatar 1:11am
duck:

it took me a long time to like noise and we have a bunch in pvd. i remember going to a super aggro show one time with i think a 'band' from new york. it was pretty much in the complete darkness with a bunch of folks clad in black running around twisting knobs on boxes to shape an overall screeching wooshing type sound as loud as a jet turbine. i wish i could say it made me feel a certain way. it didn't, but i remember it well.
Avatar 1:11am
sv:

i like oren ambarchi and yellow swans, but select stuff - i guess i'm just picky !
Avatar 1:11am
sv:

reznor's still got it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12am
Scott Williams:

also, guys... you're in the company of one legendary motherfucker of noise music! If you aren't familiar with the aural offerings of our very good friend Chop Scott - get crackin'!
Avatar 1:12am
spodiodi:

apparently
Avatar 1:13am
sv:

i wasn't aware!! gotta do some digging
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13am

Like I was saying a while back on Fabio's Accu, this is exactly the kind of stuff I love working to; it has a way of helping me focus like few things can.

i think this is the series that was sampled for old town road
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15am

SV, he records under the name Chop Shop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15am
chresti:

Blumin has played some Chop, I'm pretty sure I liked it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15am

i have a feeling Chop Scott's bandcamp site is bookmarked here and got lost in the mess.
Avatar 1:16am

Back from the surreal city, quiet as a village; saw few walkers, 4 cars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23am
coelacanth∅:

... i was gently lowered into the noise pool.
i was getting into boris and found a 99¢ download of a boris album -one track over an hour long, so i went for it.
there was no mention of another artist but it's boris with merzbow. "sun baked snow cave". starts very gentle and the noise never overpowers the rest of the music. that was maybe 15 years ago and i still love it.
Avatar 1:24am
sv:

there's some noisy boris later in this show actually
Avatar 1:24am
sv:

tdk60, what city are you referring to
Avatar 1:25am
TDK60:

ManhattIn, NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am
mariano:

Someone played some Boris and Merzbow on FMU in the last couple of weeks. Maybe you, sv?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26am
chresti:

A lot of crazy car driving around here lately, the empty roads make people put the pedal to the medal, drive on the wrong side of the road, etc.
Avatar 1:26am
sv:

i know that i played some really noisy boris a few months back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am

A long time ago on a different station Jeff Conklin did a show Just Music with a lot of noise sets, wasn't really an introduction, but certainly an education.

they released this record along with two others at the same time, i think. insane how prolific they are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42am
Andrew Waterloo:

Interesting group.. the drummer has a bit of Paul Stanley rock star thing going on while the other two are basically shoegazers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42am
coelacanth∅:

the newest one i have, i think, is gensho (another collaboration with Merzbow) which is 2016. i might just like their collaborations better, in general.
Avatar 1:44am
sv:

i love how freewheeling their sound is - my first exposure to them was via their collab with sunn0))) - crazy record, my brain did not know what to make of it
