Thank you so much Becky! I've been a big JP fan ever since a college professor gave me a burnt CD of his, and then so many radical folks I've befriended loved to sing his songs. But I was so disappointed that the Ken Burns Country Music doc didn't even mention him! I thought, is he really that peripheral to country? Definitely not! I'm glad he is getting the tribute he deserves.

It is pretty odd Burns didn't find space for him, especially since there was a whole chunk on humor in country music, Prine's gift for which, obviously, was singular and reverberates down through acts like Lyle Lovett and The Milk Carton Kids

Fuzzy:

In 1974, singer David Allan Coe achieved considerable success on the country charts with "You Never Even Called Me by My Name", co-written by Prine and Goodman. The song good-naturedly spoofs stereotypical country music lyrics. Prine refused to take a songwriter's credit and the tune went to Goodman, although Goodman bought Prine a jukebox as a gift from his publishing royalties
