This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Yep, book - “Soundscape: The Space Age Bachelor Pad Music Companion” by James Spencer. I added a bunch of albums to my want list after reading.

Chaino, good grief:
"In the promotion of his albums, a fictional biography was developed, depicting Chaino as an orphan from a lost tribe in central Africa who had been rescued by a missionary after his tribe had been massacred. Chaino was actually born in Philadelphia and raised in Chicago."
Avatar 7:26pm
Flash Strap:

Hi B/P! oh yeah, big time. I believe, like Korla Pandit, he devised this bio himself. rather tongue in cheek, but a perfect specimen of exotica's fictions

I still can't get over the communication gap or just indifference of putting "Music from Polynesia and the Far East" right there on the cover and then spending the whole liner notes talking about Haiti and the Caribbean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Franco Twinkie:

Flash, The record was on TOPS. I wouldn't expect anything less.
Avatar 7:51pm

@franco: too true. they also re-released it as Percussion Exotique & again as Exotic Percussion. I've never seen those copies but I wonder what their notes are

Avatar 8:01pm

Richard Hayman's "Voodoo!" on the other hand, is fairly convincing in parts. Also, Perez Prado's "Voodoo Suite" – but Drasnin's album could just as well be called Ports of Paradise, or whatever

Many years ago I was driving down Sunset Blvd. in Echo Park. It was a hot summer night and the windows were down. I was stopped at a signal across from a storefront Santeria church. The wild screaming and chanting coming out the open door was nothing like these records. It was kind of scary.
Avatar 8:11pm

These guys did very little research, though the liner notes will effusively insist otherwise. 99% of their research would have been watching Hollywood movies anyway

This and Bahia are my fave Lyman LPs. Some deep moods.
Avatar 8:50pm

Bahia is so good, but I think for me it's a tie between this and Legend of Pele. Taboo is amazing as well though...

Avatar 8:52pm

Lyman really does a transformative number on Malaguena here, an exotica master interpreter
Avatar 8:53pm
Frog Mover:

@Flash got a red Kapu. Funny cause that definitely doesn't seem like a trend then to my knowledge.
Avatar 8:53pm
Flash Strap:

@LD: it really is, the track Taboo is such a stereo trip too, it's so well-recorded and visceral it wigs me out
Avatar 8:55pm
Flash Strap:

Man I have both Kapu and its original release "Exotic Percussion" and i don't have the red for either! jealous. they did do that a lot back then though, particularly on budget labels if i'm not mistaken
Avatar 8:56pm
Flash Strap:

Vera Cruz is INSANE - the liner notes even compare it to "gloomy sunday" aka the Hungarian Suicide Song: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 8:58pm
Flash Strap:

the song Vera Cruz comes from the 1954 Burt Lancaster / Gary Cooper film of the same name, famed for its then-shocking violence

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
chresti:

This is a funny song to exotify
Avatar 9:05pm
Flash Strap:

@chresti: i know, it's crazy, it's almost like the jungle reclaiming it & with it the British fighting spirit (almost)
Avatar 9:06pm
Flash Strap:

Lyman ended all his early album with a march, that's the only one of them I can stand. a bad tendency in my opinion
Avatar 9:07pm
Flash Strap:

Plas Johnson on sax for this record, really throws it to a different musical realm

Nice quote from Kirby Allan, producer of a number of Chaino's recordings:

"He was a troubled artist, but it was what made him a great artist. He vented all his hang-ups and sexual frustrations busting out on those drums. I almost got shot trying to help him. People would come after him for all kinds of reason."

- about liner notes...they put me in a "special" room in high school (10th?) because they figured i couldn't read. the "special" teacher, Ms.Piel, was a special lady and we got along great. she soon asked me if i read anything...anything at all. i said liner notes!
so she got me reading bios of musicians and groups and Presto! i'm not mentally handicapped any more!
