	3:09pm doctorjazz: My Lee Konitz story (have posted this before, apologies if you've seen it). I discovered Jazz in my last year of college, in a college course given by Chuck Israels (I had no idea that was a big deal, of course, or who Bill Evans was, etc). Well, Israel's was out for a week or so on a gig, got Lee Konitz to sub. Konitz came in, put Miles' On The Corner on, took out his alto, and just blew to it, stopping here and there to point out sections he liked. It was great (I didn't really know who Lee was either, but he did appear on our "textbook", The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz).

A friend and I used to listen to On The Corner, trying out figure out why it sounded familiar, and then we realized it sounded a lot like Talking Heads' Remain In Light, an album that wouldn't come out for another three years, and then we realized what David Byrne was listening to. Lee Konitz breaking that down would be so cool. Lucky devil.

Konitz is on two tracks, with Miles and with Lennie Tristano, with whom he performs his own great composition, "Subconcious-Lee."

	4:33pm fred: @doctorjazz: definitely, especially with percussion or instruments like pipa or shamisen (mp3 blurs attacks). Noise too, as the researchers who created mp3 considered texture perceptually irrelevant. (Attacks are noise in their book)

	4:41pm Irene Trudel: Well, if you have the time and inclination-- a show that long is possible, as you say doctorjazz, over multiple days. we all seem to have LOTS of time on our hands as we shelter in place. I prefer my sleep.

	4:43pm Dean: I discovered Venus at the aforementioned Analog Room. Brian was able to get his hands on that sort of thing. Picked up some of Ken Peplowski's LPs on the label, among others.

	4:48pm Irene Trudel: Yes, I listened to much of Stork's Herbie Hancock tribute while fighting my way through our Fairway grocery store last Sunday. I felt I had to get clean from all the less socially distant people in there. The show made it bearable.

	4:49pm doctorjazz: Cool, Dean. I have some Peplowski LPs and Cd's, but they're all on Concord Records (which was no slouch in recording either)
	4:50pm TDK60: Irene, the one on Broadway & 74th? A real maze, if so. I've taken to going to a supermarket open all night, round midnight (to avoid the clueless).
	4:51pm doctorjazz: Love Brad Meldhau, sorry I've never managed to catch him live (one of these days...)
	4:51pm Dean: Same here with Peplowski. The Concord stuff shows up in used bins quite a bit at affordable prices. Venus stuff is pricier. Kinda weird packaging. But the music!

	4:56pm Irene Trudel: TDK60, yeah I thought that I was there early enough in the day to miss the crowds but I was mistaken. I don't leave the house much these days. WFH, as does Peter.

	4:58pm Irene Trudel: doctorjazz, we've seen Mehldau a lot. Love his playing. I think the most recent show we saw was a duo show with Chris Thile at Town Hall. really lovely, and a great album together as well.

	5:01pm Wolfgang: The Herbiethon could have gone at lest twice as long. I get the feeling that a Konitz tribute could take a week. But, please with Peter and Irene - the Anti-Schapps.

	5:03pm Doug Schulkind: There is never a frivolous or throwaway moment with Konitz. Never a vamp or holding pattern blown to buy time for the next idea to engage. Everything steadily flows without hesitation, fully formed and unperfectible.

	5:05pm doctorjazz: I Love Meldhau's recorded output, somehow it has never worked out to get to a live date, either hear too late, or timing doesn't work out. Thile and Mehldau would be a great pair-after holding out on going to Live From Here, I went to a few, and loved it. Thile has a great presence on the show, hard to appreciate it completely on the radio.

	5:15pm doctorjazz: Phil Schapp was actually a big part of my early jazz education; he had a show every morning 8:20-9:30, "Bird Flight", only the music of Charlie Parker. He did other shows with a jazz history focus. And, he was involved in remastering and reissues of historical jazz records (he's still at WKCR, afaik, though I think he's cut back his time there due to health issues)
	5:15pm Irene Trudel: That's fine with us to not do a super-long show. But it may go past 6pm our time. We don't want to be told to Shaad-ap!
	5:16pm fred: @TDK60: Thanks, I think I know the type. Sometimes enlightening, sometimes talking too much (but that also depends on how familiar I was with the music beforehand)

	5:19pm Dean: Ben Ratliff reviewed that Iridium show in the Nov. 27, 2003, NYT. Was Konitz's 75th. Headline: A $400 Cake Wasn't Served, but the Band Played On. Per the story, "Many Costello fans who came for the first set unaware that Mr. Costello had already left -- and perhaps not particularly interested in Mr. Konitz's quartet -- angrily demanded refunds at the end of the set. (The club obliged.)"

	5:21pm doctorjazz: Great quartet here...I'm also a big fan of Joey Baron, since being totally floored by his playing in John Zorn's original Masada Quartet.
	5:22pm Irene Trudel: Yes, we saw Harmony when they were at The Jazz Standard. Really exceptional. Petra Haden, who sings with them, has a new album with her sisters as The Haden Triplets. Another wonderful album, and unfortunately a canceled tour. They were supposed to be in NYC this past week with an appearance on our Soundcheck podcsast.
	5:23pm doctorjazz: I was at one of the Jazz Standard shows, have that 1st Haden sisters albums, glad there's another.
	5:24pm Dean: I love pulling records to play from my collection and learning what I never knew or at best forgot, namely, that Baron is drumming.
	5:24pm Uncle Michael: The folks that keep bringing Bill to KC have an artist Q&A after all of their programs. I was there the first time the brought Bill, and he hadn't been told. But, he was a gamer. This last time, I directed a question to Petra, and she was obliging and charming.
	5:24pm Wolfgang: Me too, DrJ. Joey Baron just blew me away from day one. He is astounding to watch live. Effortless, yet devastatingly powerful.
	5:26pm Uncle Michael: North is EC's love letter to Diana Krall. I'm delighted to hear this Lee contribution.

Noted for his "playing in the moment" style of improvisation, Jazz Saxophonist Lee Konitz passed on April 15, 2020 at age 92 from complications related to Covid19. When Lee first started playing (mainly alto sax) in the 1950's, everybody seemed to be imitating Charlie Parker. But as noted in his New York Times obit, Konitz told The Wall Street Journal in 2013. “...I didn’t want to sound like him. So I used almost no vibrato and played mostly in the higher register. That’s the heart of my sound.” Lee was named an NEA Jazz Master in 2009, and over his prolific career he has played with every kind of jazz ensemble, from duos on up to 61-piece orchestras over the course of well over 100 albums. Lee Konitz was a neighbor of Irene's and she and husband Peter Keepnews paid tribute to the Late-Lee.

	3:09pm doctorjazz: My Lee Konitz story (have posted this before, apologies if you've seen it). I discovered Jazz in my last year of college, in a college course given by Chuck Israels (I had no idea that was a big deal, of course, or who Bill Evans was, etc). Well, Israel's was out for a week or so on a gig, got Lee Konitz to sub. Konitz came in, put Miles' On The Corner on, took out his alto, and just blew to it, stopping here and there to point out sections he liked. It was great (I didn't really know who Lee was either, but he did appear on our "textbook", The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz).

A friend and I used to listen to On The Corner, trying out figure out why it sounded familiar, and then we realized it sounded a lot like Talking Heads' Remain In Light, an album that wouldn't come out for another three years, and then we realized what David Byrne was listening to. Lee Konitz breaking that down would be so cool. Lucky devil.

Konitz is on two tracks, with Miles and with Lennie Tristano, with whom he performs his own great composition, "Subconcious-Lee."

	4:48pm Irene Trudel: Yes, I listened to much of Stork's Herbie Hancock tribute while fighting my way through our Fairway grocery store last Sunday. I felt I had to get clean from all the less socially distant people in there. The show made it bearable.

	5:03pm Doug Schulkind: There is never a frivolous or throwaway moment with Konitz. Never a vamp or holding pattern blown to buy time for the next idea to engage. Everything steadily flows without hesitation, fully formed and unperfectible.

	5:05pm doctorjazz: I Love Meldhau's recorded output, somehow it has never worked out to get to a live date, either hear too late, or timing doesn't work out. Thile and Mehldau would be a great pair-after holding out on going to Live From Here, I went to a few, and loved it. Thile has a great presence on the show, hard to appreciate it completely on the radio.

	5:15pm doctorjazz: Phil Schapp was actually a big part of my early jazz education; he had a show every morning 8:20-9:30, "Bird Flight", only the music of Charlie Parker. He did other shows with a jazz history focus. And, he was involved in remastering and reissues of historical jazz records (he's still at WKCR, afaik, though I think he's cut back his time there due to health issues)
	5:15pm Irene Trudel: That's fine with us to not do a super-long show. But it may go past 6pm our time. We don't want to be told to Shaad-ap!

	5:19pm Dean: Ben Ratliff reviewed that Iridium show in the Nov. 27, 2003, NYT. Was Konitz's 75th. Headline: A $400 Cake Wasn't Served, but the Band Played On. Per the story, "Many Costello fans who came for the first set unaware that Mr. Costello had already left -- and perhaps not particularly interested in Mr. Konitz's quartet -- angrily demanded refunds at the end of the set. (The club obliged.)"

	5:21pm doctorjazz: Great quartet here...I'm also a big fan of Joey Baron, since being totally floored by his playing in John Zorn's original Masada Quartet.
	5:22pm Irene Trudel: Yes, we saw Harmony when they were at The Jazz Standard. Really exceptional. Petra Haden, who sings with them, has a new album with her sisters as The Haden Triplets. Another wonderful album, and unfortunately a canceled tour. They were supposed to be in NYC this past week with an appearance on our Soundcheck podcsast.
	5:23pm doctorjazz: I was at one of the Jazz Standard shows, have that 1st Haden sisters albums, glad there's another.
	5:24pm Dean: I love pulling records to play from my collection and learning what I never knew or at best forgot, namely, that Baron is drumming.
