Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm listener james from westwood:

Yay, Irene!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Uncle Michael:

Hello, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

So thrilled to have some time with Irene today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Doug Schulkind:

With big wide open arms and ears, welcome to the Drummer Stream, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm fred:

Irene!
I hope this will turn into a regular appointment (but not just tribute shows)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm doctorjazz:

Hi, Irene...you won't remember, but I met you once at a club (think it was The City Winery, was there with my friend Jim...maybe seeing Jim Kweskin, but less sure about that). (Cut and pasted this from Stork, put it up last minute).
Avatar 3:02pm TDK60:

Great Irene. We need a more-usual show too; maybe soon?..
  3:03pm Dean:

Lee Konitz reminds me of Irwin's rants against adverbs, and vice versa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Irene Trudel:

HI james from westwood, Uncle Michael, Granny Spicy Tuna, Doug, fred, TDK60 and doctorjazz! Great to have so many of you here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm fleep:

Greetings, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm chresti:

Hello Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Irene Trudel:

doctorjazz, I do remember that a little bit. THat was a great reunion show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Irene Trudel:

Welcome fleep and chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm melinda:

Hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Irene! What a wonderful surprise!
Avatar 3:04pm StringOFperils:

This is going to be bittersweet, and really nice . :)
Avatar 3:05pm hyde:

this is cool, thanks for doing it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Wow, the room is filling up with so many fine WFMU folx! So much love for Irene and Lee Knonitz and Peter Keepnews and WFMU!!!
  3:06pm rw:

Hello! Enjoying the tribute already. Thank you Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Irene Trudel:

Wowee! Hi melinda, Wendy, StringOfPearls, hyde and rw! good to have you all here. We're going all self-indulgent with Lee Konitz-- which is love-Lee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm doctorjazz:

My Lee Konitz story (have posted this before, apologies if you've seen it). I discovered Jazz in my last year of college, in a college course given by Chuck Israels (I had no idea that was a big deal, of course, or who Bill Evans was, etc). Well, Israel's was out for a week or so on a gig, got Lee Konitz to sub. Konitz came in, put Miles' On The Corner on, took out his alto, and just blew to it, stopping here and there to point out sections he liked. It was great (I didn't really know who Lee was either, but he did appear on our "textbook", The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm doctorjazz:

Love that Duets album.
  3:12pm Dean:

I'd forgotten that story, docjazz, and I love hearing it again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Irene Trudel:

Thatq's a classic Lee story, doctorjazz! He seemed to live playing in the moment.
  3:14pm Jeff g. via app:

Hey-o! Thanks doing this, Irene!
Avatar 3:16pm Yennifer:

Afternoon Irene <3 listening from Oregon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Artie:

Such a lovely gathering. Thanks for bringing us together today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm doctorjazz:

Gotta go bike, catch up later, thanks, Irene!
Avatar 3:20pm StringOFperils:

@doctorjazz ...I can't help but be envious of you being witness to that. Having someone of that calibre on hand to go over On The Corner would be amazing. A friend and I used to listen to On The Corner, trying out figure out why it sounded familiar, and then we realized it sounded a lot like Talking Heads' Remain In Light, an album that wouldn't come out for another three years, and then we realized what David Byrne was listening to. Lee Konitz breaking that down would be so cool. Lucky devil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Irene Trudel:

Glad to do this, Jeff! We were rather fond of Lee.
  3:21pm Ramblin' Ray:

Greetings all. What an extraordinary and unique journey made by the one and only Mr. Konitz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm WR:

Arrrgggghhh. Work conference call just ended. Connect to the stream and, deep breath, I hear Konitz thoughtful probing alto. Deep breath, ah, so beautiful. Thank you for playing his music. What I have is all on disk in storage. And we hear both of you clear.
Avatar 3:22pm Wolfgang:

What a bee-oo-tiful set! Welcome welcome to the GTDR stream!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Doug Schulkind:

My parents gave me the Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz as a birthday present for, I think, my 13th birthday. I probably listened to the entire thing a thousand times. Konitz is on two tracks, with Miles and with Lennie Tristano, with whom he performs his own great composition, "Subconcious-Lee."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Doug Schulkind:

...Subconscious...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm fred:

My interpretation of the shelter-in-place orders is that Irene's show has to remain in that spot for the foreseeable future, or longer
  3:25pm Dean:

Did he ever deliver a Real-Lee? Ironical-Lee?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm alanr:

So wonderful to hear your voice on WFMU again, instead of only hearing your "name" on John Schaefer's programs.
  3:25pm Dean:

Probab-Lee?
Avatar 3:27pm Wolfgang:

Peter Keepnews belongs on the radio!!
  3:29pm Peggy Stern:

Hi Irene -- Claire alerted me to your program; I applaud you for doing this, but I cant seem to connect to the program...help?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm WR:

doctorjazz, wow, great opportunity. I never did see Konitz in person. Always respected him not only for his playing but also for his diverse collaborations and all I have heard truly worked. And On the Corner is my favorite post Bitches Brew Miles album so triple wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Peggy, there are two links at the top of this page. Click on either the link "Pop-Up" or "128k MP3"
Avatar 3:31pm Wolfgang:

Peggy:

how are you trying to connect? Phone? Laptop?
Avatar 3:32pm Wolfgang:

What Doug said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm fred:

@Peggy Stern: What Doug said. The links are on the line that starts with "Give the Drummer Radio LIVE Audio Streams"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Doug Schulkind:

If either of those are problematic, you can just paste this URL in your browser: stream0.wfmu.org... When the little device has loaded, click the black triangle to start playing.
Avatar 3:35pm TDK60:

Moon Dreams sounded like an actual LP, or 10 inch? Am I allowed to say the crackling sounds quaint?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, Peggy-- What Doug said. Good to hear from you!
Avatar 3:36pm Rebecca Lewis:

Hi Irene! It's nice to hear you today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Ramblin' Ray, WR, fred, alanr, fred and Dean And Becky! I'm still getting used to this home studio setup. But so glad you're all joining me. @TDK60, that was actually a CD but probably the source discs were actual vinyl or shellac discs.
Avatar 3:42pm Jeff Moore:

Hey, Irene and Peter!

It's great to hear you both. (There have been far too few Irene shows recently for my taste.)
  3:52pm claire:

hey! just got back from store. it's a jungle out there. i'm never leaving again. so glad to hear your voices!
Avatar 3:52pm Wolfgang:

I'm in ecstasy! This is such splendid radio!
  3:53pm Dean:

Was that "Moon Dreams" from the live performance? If so, the liner notes by Phil Schaap for the Complete issue state, "The original source material is on acetate disc."
Avatar 3:54pm hyde:

loving this
  3:57pm bigplanetnoise:

Sounding just great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Claire! Yeah, stay inside and listen! Hi Jeff Moore, hyde and bigplanetnoise! @Dean, yes it was in fact the live sessions.
  4:16pm claire:

yes - loving the show, and i just called donald elfman and told him the link. i think he is gonna join us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Claire! You rock. We haven't heard from Donald in a long time. Spread the word!
Avatar 4:20pm Jay S:

Wonderful show - thank you for playing all this Lee Konitz!

I heard a duo concert by Lee and Paul Bley in San Francisco years ago - what fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Irene Trudel:

Wow, Jay! Cool that you saw Lee and Paul together )another fave of ours). Lee played out until very late.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm coelacanth∅:

hello Irene & Peter and all
  4:26pm doctorjazz:

Back from ride (had too cut it short due to mechanical issues on family member's bikes...thankfully, bike repair folks are considered essential)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Asheville Jon:

so great to hear you on the air again Irene!
excellent show today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm doctorjazz:

Yes you can (hear the difference in mp3's-I geek out as well.
  4:30pm claire:

john laporta used to say lennie had a cult.
  4:31pm Dean:

Did you notice, doctorjazz, Michael Fremer's remarks about that Ella 2LP 45rpm record you noted on the Stork Club show this a.m.? "There is no way in hell any digital edition of this could sound as genuine as this double 45."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Irene and Peter, to be honest, you could keep the show going, but you'll have to wrap things up by 7pm tomorrow evening when Kim Sorise and Global Grease are scheduled to take over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm doctorjazz:

Lennie used to keep his drummers on a tight leash, from what I recall
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm fred:

@doctorjazz: definitely, especially with percussion or instruments like pipa or shamisen (mp3 blurs attacks). Noise too, as the researchers who created mp3 considered texture perceptually irrelevant. (Attacks are noise in their book)
Avatar 4:34pm Wolfgang:

There you go, Irene and Peter. The clock is ticking. You have 26 and a half hours left, and not a minute more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm deesat:

Irene & Peter, thanks for this intro to Lee's music - as a newbie to his stuff, I am amazed, and can listen for another 12-24 hours!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Irene Trudel:

Ha! Doug & Wolfgang, yeah, we could keep going but we want to play nice. Hi to coelacanth and Ashville John.
  4:36pm Dean:

Venus Records! Speaking of quality audio! This label is amazing. Based in a record store in...Tokyo?...a number of the recordings were made in NYC. Spectacular sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm fred:

@Stork: What kind of maniac would have a tribute run over 6 hours?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Irene Trudel:

Uhh, fred, perhaps Phil Shaap?
  4:39pm Dean:

(And Stork himself, last Sunday.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm doctorjazz:

Hey, Dean, I did read the Fremer blurb. He is the guru of vinyl, but I'll just have to live with my old LP copy.

Schapp would run it 6 days...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Asheville Jon:

the Stork Club Hancock birthday tribute was great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm doctorjazz:

Not familiar with Venus records (I'll have to turn in my audio+geek card, I guess...)
Avatar 4:40pm duke:

I have been a Lee Konitz fan for a while, but this show has introduced me to some new stuff. Thanks Irene and Peter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Irene Trudel:

Well, if you have the time and inclination-- a show that long is possible, as you say doctorjazz, over multiple days. we all seem to have LOTS of time on our hands as we shelter in place. I prefer my sleep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm doctorjazz:

Big catalog (just checked Discogs), some titles I know.
  4:43pm Dean:

I discovered Venus at the aforementioned Analog Room. Brian was able to get his hands on that sort of thing. Picked up some of Ken Peplowski's LPs on the label, among others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm doctorjazz:

Amen to Asheville Jon, @4:40.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, I listened to much of Stork's Herbie Hancock tribute while fighting my way through our Fairway grocery store last Sunday. I felt I had to get clean from all the less socially distant people in there. The show made it bearable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Irene Trudel:

I as well need to check out these Venus Records releases.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm doctorjazz:

Cool, Dean. I have some Peplowski LPs and Cd's, but they're all on Concord Records (which was no slouch in recording either)
Avatar 4:50pm TDK60:

Irene, the one on Broadway & 74th? A real maze, if so. I've taken to going to a supermarket open all night, round midnight (to avoid the clueless).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm doctorjazz:

Love Brad Meldhau, sorry I've never managed to catch him live (one of these days...)
  4:51pm Dean:

Same here with Peplowski. The Concord stuff shows up in used bins quite a bit at affordable prices. Venus stuff is pricier. Kinda weird packaging. But the music!
  4:53pm Dean:

Peplowski's more recent recordings on Capri are solid, too.
  4:54pm Dean:

There we go! Broadbent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Irene Trudel:

TDK60, yeah I thought that I was there early enough in the day to miss the crowds but I was mistaken. I don't leave the house much these days. WFH, as does Peter.
  4:57pm Dean:

This live duo recorded at Jazz Bakery, where later the same year I heard Broadbent accompany Mark Murphy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm doctorjazz:

Cool recording-
www.discogs.com...
Avatar 4:58pm TDK60:

Irene: Ha! I live in Washington Heights; that supermarket is up in Inwood, on Dyckman & B'way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Irene Trudel:

doctorjazz, we've seen Mehldau a lot. Love his playing. I think the most recent show we saw was a duo show with Chris Thile at Town Hall. really lovely, and a great album together as well.
  4:59pm Dean:

There's a More Live-Lee, too.
Avatar 5:01pm Wolfgang:

The Herbiethon could have gone at lest twice as long. I get the feeling that a Konitz tribute could take a week. But, please with Peter and Irene - the Anti-Schapps.
Avatar 5:02pm Wolfgang:

Thanks, Jon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Doug Schulkind:

There is never a frivolous or throwaway moment with Konitz. Never a vamp or holding pattern blown to buy time for the next idea to engage. Everything steadily flows without hesitation, fully formed and unperfectible.
Avatar 5:04pm Wolfgang:

Dougie: You just plagiarized my mind, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm doctorjazz:

I Love Meldhau's recorded output, somehow it has never worked out to get to a live date, either hear too late, or timing doesn't work out.
Thile and Mehldau would be a great pair-after holding out on going to Live From Here, I went to a few, and loved it. Thile has a great presence on the show, hard to appreciate it completely on the radio.
Avatar 5:05pm Wolfgang:

You're sailing along with aplomb, Irene!
Swag For Life Member 5:05pm 12539:

The listeners *are* loving it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm doctorjazz:

Absatively, posolutely!
  5:06pm claire:

irene and peter! SO great listening today. i hope you'll make it a regular thing. it's like "car talk" for jazz. love to y'all. i have to go. stay safe!
  5:06pm Dean:

Hmmm, this gives me an idea for a marketing scam, er, ploy, uh, strategy. Package "The Complete Recordings of [artist], Deleted."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm fred:

@Stork: I first read that as Anti-Schnapps, which was puzzling and slightly alarming. I have no idea who that Schapps guy is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm doctorjazz:

I'm definitely pro-schnaps!
  5:09pm Dean:

That Evans track is a gem for both musical and grammatical reasons.
  5:09pm Dean:

^track s/b piece
Avatar 5:10pm TDK60:

Fred, he's a DJ on WKCR FM who is real academic and talks much. His shows are like classes. I'm not anti or pro; neutral.
Avatar 5:11pm Wolfgang:

Let me be clear, Fred: I am NOT anti-schnapps! I'll drink whatever ya got!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm doctorjazz:

Phil Schapp was actually a big part of my early jazz education; he had a show every morning 8:20-9:30, "Bird Flight", only the music of Charlie Parker. He did other shows with a jazz history focus. And, he was involved in remastering and reissues of historical jazz records (he's still at WKCR, afaik, though I think he's cut back his time there due to health issues)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Irene Trudel:

That's fine with us to not do a super-long show. But it may go past 6pm our time. We don't want to be told to Shaad-ap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm fred:

@TDK60: Thanks, I think I know the type. Sometimes enlightening, sometimes talking too much (but that also depends on how familiar I was with the music beforehand)
Avatar 5:16pm Wolfgang:

Phil Schapp is to be greatly admired. The same way the Oxford English Dictionary is to be greatly admired. But you wouldn't want to go out to dinner with the Oxford English Dictionary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm doctorjazz:

This is lovely...(Frisell/Konitz and the rest)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Uncle Michael:

My last pre-Covid show was Bill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Irene Trudel:

Claire, I don't know if I should be insulted or happy to be compared to the Car Talk guys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Irene Trudel:

Bill Frisell is one of my all-time favorite guitarists. I'd see him with any combo.
Avatar 5:18pm Wolfgang:

Yesss! Go long!! This is truly fantabulastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm doctorjazz:

(Schapp does tend to go on a bit on air...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Uncle Michael:

Irene, I see him whenever I can. I don't care what he's touring.
  5:19pm Ramblin' Ray:

Phil Schaap is a bard-like storyteller of musical knowledge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm doctorjazz:

The last Frisell tour, with the group Harmony, was great, saw one show (as UM knows).
  5:19pm Dean:

Ben Ratliff reviewed that Iridium show in the Nov. 27, 2003, NYT. Was Konitz's 75th. Headline: A $400 Cake Wasn't Served, but the Band Played On. Per the story, "Many Costello fans who came for the first set unaware that Mr. Costello had already left -- and perhaps not particularly interested in Mr. Konitz's quartet -- angrily demanded refunds at the end of the set. (The club obliged.)"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Irene Trudel:

True dat, Ray.
  5:21pm Dean:

Matt Wilson played for that show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm doctorjazz:

Great quartet here...I'm also a big fan of Joey Baron, since being totally floored by his playing in John Zorn's original Masada Quartet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, we saw Harmony when they were at The Jazz Standard. Really exceptional. Petra Haden, who sings with them, has a new album with her sisters as The Haden Triplets. Another wonderful album, and unfortunately a canceled tour. They were supposed to be in NYC this past week with an appearance on our Soundcheck podcsast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm doctorjazz:

I was at one of the Jazz Standard shows, have that 1st Haden sisters albums, glad there's another.
  5:24pm Dean:

I love pulling records to play from my collection and learning what I never knew or at best forgot, namely, that Baron is drumming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Uncle Michael:

The folks that keep bringing Bill to KC have an artist Q&A after all of their programs. I was there the first time the brought Bill, and he hadn't been told. But, he was a gamer. This last time, I directed a question to Petra, and she was obliging and charming.
Avatar 5:24pm Wolfgang:

Me too, DrJ. Joey Baron just blew me away from day one. He is astounding to watch live. Effortless, yet devastatingly powerful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Uncle Michael:

North is EC's love letter to Diana Krall. I'm delighted to hear this Lee contribution.
  5:26pm Dean:

(I confess, I would have asked for a refund if EC had appeared.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Dean! I remembered most of the details of that show. And Elvis was supposed to be there because Lee was on one track of his North album.
  5:27pm Dean:

And yet Alan Broadbent has worked a bit with Diana Krall. I'm really torn up over all of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm doctorjazz:

And UM is modestly not mentioning that Petra acknowledged his Sharp ears in the Q&A...
  5:30pm Dean:

Just forwarded the NYT story to Doug S. for relay to you and Peter. Alas, copyright restricts reproduction of the photo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm doctorjazz:

Beautiful stuff Irene and Peter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Uncle Michael:

I deny the accusation. I just don't like re-telling a story till it becomes a boring story. I'm not modest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm doctorjazz:

I Never mind over repeating a story, just ask my family...
  5:32pm Dean:

Correction: the full page repro includes the photo. Sent both.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm fred:

@UM: Is that why your avatar has no ears? Plausible deniability at work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm coelacanth∅:

you can tell it again in a year or 2. it's worthy of repeated tellings, within limits!
  5:34pm Dean:

Heck, Homer was all about repeating stories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm doctorjazz:

(Probably why I'm not on the radio... among other reasons...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm WR:

Gotta go pick up food. Greatly enjoyed the show. Hope you both do more WFMU shows soon. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm doctorjazz:

Wheeler and Konitz are a great pairing. Some similarity of sensibilities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks WR! You can catch the rest in the archives. And I do hope to be doing more shows soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm fred:

@doctorjazz: Though if your furlough continues, and with your record library... Maybe something to consider
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm doctorjazz:

Konitz always had a dry, tart tone, which seems to have gotten more tart over the years.

@Fred-furlough is up starting May 1, a bit less than 2 weeks, then back to work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm doctorjazz:

Ditto to WR, @5:35!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm fred:

@Irene: "more shows soon"... I'm all for it
Swag For Life Member 5:41pm 12539:

Thanks for doing this, Irene & Peter! Come back any time.
  5:41pm Dean:

One of my favorite Frisell appearances is on a Marc Johnson record, The Sound of Summer Running, with Joey Baron and Pat Metheny. They do a lovely version of Frisell's "Ghost Town."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Irene Trudel:

Hey doctorjazz, I'm on indefinite furlough, although I still edit the Soundcheck Podcast for New Sounds. All this extra time enabled me to put together my home studio, which I've needed to do for some time.Something to think about.
  5:43pm listener marianne:

Thanks Irene and Peter for the lovely tribute. A show for the ages!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm fred:

Don't let dust gather on that home studio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm chresti:

Thanks Irene and Peter, wonderful tribute!
  5:45pm Dean:

Yes, thank you. Was hoping you'd unearthed that NPR interview you mentioned last week. I guess not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks marianne, fred, chresti and Dean! We still havr at least one more set. @Dean, I did find the show but I'll tell the story after this tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm doctorjazz:

Be chopping onions for the rest of the show, another reason to cry.
  5:49pm Dean:

Any idea what the referent of the title of this Hall tune is? Can't be the composer Donald Erb, can it? He'd just received his Ph.D. three years prior to the recording.
  5:50pm Dean:

Oh, so 'erb!
  5:52pm Dean:

For a good time, check out Donal Erb's Red Hot Duets for Two Contrabassoons.
  5:54pm Listener Robert:

Yay, Irene and Peter, hope somebody else doesn't have to die for us to hear from you again.
Avatar 5:54pm TDK60:

Thanks!
Avatar 5:54pm Jeff Moore:

Yes, please do more shows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm doctorjazz:

More shows, absolutely!
Avatar 5:55pm Wolfgang:

I'm afraid that the old convention of cultural appreciation in Germany has lost a lot of its lustre. It's still alive in big cities somewhat, but jazz is dying here. Sad to say.
Avatar 5:55pm hyde:

agreed on mre shows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Artie:

Lovely show. Thanks! Hope to hear you again soon.
  5:56pm Ramblin' Ray:

Thanks!
  5:59pm Dean:

Oh, no, they dint! That pun.
  6:01pm Jeff g. via app:

Glad to get to know — know! — this nonet.

Thanks again for the wonderful memorial show, Irene and Peter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Irene Trudel:

Dean, Peter wants me to tell you Donald Erb was Jim Hall's teacher at The Cleveland Institute.
  6:03pm Dean:

I thought something like that might be the case, but the Wikipedia entry on Erb's students (yes, there is one) doesn't mention Hall. Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm doctorjazz:

Thanks for the great tribute, Irene and Peter!
Avatar 6:05pm StringOFperils:

Thanks for getting this tribute out there into my day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm fred:

The beginning of this one reminded me of Philip Glass
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Uncle Michael:

Great to hear you do this wonderful thing on the stream, Irene! Thanks to you too, Peter.
  6:10pm Dean:

Looks like Erb received a Masters at Cleveland two years before Hall entered as a student.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Irene Trudel:

So glad you've all ben enjoying this tribute to Lee. We have a couple more tunes, and a really special one to end with. Thanks for making me feel so welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm doctorjazz:

Reminds me a bit of Body and Soul (?same chords?). Did Lee, the bass clarinet, the textures, great track!
  6:12pm Dean:

Played Thingin' two days ago.
Avatar 6:12pm Wolfgang:

Wow, what a killer track. Never heard of Ohad Talmor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm doctorjazz:

(Dig Lee, phone post, sheesh)
Avatar 6:15pm Wolfgang:

I think it's unanimous, Irene and Peter: you gotta book more Drummer gigs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Irene Trudel:

Stork, I have two albums on which Lee collaborated with Ohad Talmor. I'll have to send them to you.
Avatar 6:17pm Wolfgang:

That would be nifty, Irene. Really gorgeous stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Irene Trudel:

Aww, you're too kind!
  6:20pm Dean:

Talmor's the O in MOB Trio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm doctorjazz:

Having a shot of maple syrup apple brandy, a toast to the hosts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Irene Trudel:

Ooh, yum doctorjazz! We'll have to do something similar when this show ends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm fred:

Yea to more shows!
doctorjazz lives up to his pro-schnaps pledge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Dreams is right.
Avatar 6:26pm Wolfgang:

Once I laughed
When You told me
That I would wake up with the sun
And order orange juice for one
It never entered my mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm doctorjazz:

Hahaha, Fred! (It was yummy, had it with my older daughter, makes the cooking mul more fun)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm doctorjazz:

Offer for Henry Threadgill Mosaic Box still open...
Avatar 6:31pm Wolfgang:

Correction:

And once you told me I was mistaken
That I'd awaken with the sun
And ordered orange juice for one
It never entered my mind

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Congratulations to humanity for producing a Lee Konitz. Thanks to Irene and Peter for the post-production!
  6:37pm Dean:

Once again, I've spent the bulk of the day standing in my kitchen staring at/listening to the Chromebook tuned to WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Doug, and everybody tuning in!
