Hey David! Passed by Roulette on Atlantic Avenue. Used to live near there about 7 years ago. The neighborhood hyper gentrified within a year of me leaving and was somewhat dead because of it back then. But now in the middle of all of this, it’s even deader than dead.

Stanley! Bask away...
  3:20pm
JakeGould:

@DavidW: Well, Atlantic Avenue became alien to me when $400 (by 2013 prices) mini skirts were being sold by some boutiques. But anyway… I hope Roulette still has a home there; the rest of that strip is dead to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
doctorjazz:

Went to Roulette not too long before the shut down, Nels Cline had an interesting group/performance there. I lived in Park Slope until the mid 90s, talk about the shock of neighborhood change.
  3:23pm
JakeGould:

@doctorjazz: When I lived in Park Slope in the early 1990s, walking down Atlantic Avenue near Nevins was scary. Still filled with cool furniture shops and real junk stores.

Things are not looking good over here: small shops are failing, banks are gobbling up the locations, just to put in placeholder real estate agencies until they have enough to build more soulless buildings
  3:26pm

Yeah, there used to be a Walgreens and a 24 hour laundromat near me. Now they are both glass towers with empty retail on the first floor.

@JakeGould-yup, as was most of 5th Avenue. Lived on Carroll St bet 5th and 6th avenues(just off 5th, had a crack house next door early on), wife was always afraid if she had to come down 5th Avenue.

I think this was the Fire Over Heaven with Max and Bruce McClure? have to check my records...
  3:33pm
JakeGould:

@doctorjazz: Yup! My mom used to work in a sweat shop on Carroll Street near the Gowanus in the 1980s. She’s passed away but I still have the sharpened screwdriver and buck knife she carried each day going to work.

FWIW, I used to live on Union Street between 7th and 8th. Just before the “lawyers” as my Italian landlady started to move into the neighborhood moved in. My rent was cheap even for back then. Like another planet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
doctorjazz:

@Jeff, you were in my old haunts, but we had skipped it 3 to the swamps of Jersey by 95. We were trying for child #2, and having 1, and a neurotic dog, in a small, narrow 3rd floor walk up was difficult.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm

My Italian landlady moved into the President St. building in 1939. She thought it was old, at the time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm

Shlepped into Barbed from Joisey often as I could, like that space.
  3:42pm
JakeGould:

@JeffGolick: Ha! I had friends who lived on President Street between 5th and 4th who did a gut rehab of their place and found a vintage silver gun and some Italian newspaper clippings in the wall.

Which I means I have nothing to do with nothing.

@Fred was it the show in Paris with Danny Oxenberg?
  3:46pm
Che Chen:

aw, thanks, Ruth! since we are listening to Max, I have to plug new horse lords too. it's sort of unfair that he can make such incredibly detailed and lush computer music and plays bass in one of the greatest bands working right now. new record is full of impossible polyrhythms and i'm a polyrhythm guy!

I lived next to a crack house in Brooklyn, too! But it was a different crack house, and it was kitty-corner across the intersection, not literally next door, so what the hell do I have to complain about?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm

Oh yeah, I was at a dance show that day. The Ex are great people, and longtime friends of that venue. They played many times there, and I know that they once insisted that everyone including the supporting bands should be paid the exact same. The most money a friend ever made from a gig

Correction: I wasn't at a dance show that day (which is usually why I'm not at a show there). The transit strike was on, and the show sold out quick. I can usually get in sold out shows there (perk of being there when there are a handful of people), but I don't like to use that privilege and would have had to walk 8+ miles each way

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm

Venues reopening in September looks like the best case option here. May happen, maybe not. Next year should be the 30th anniversary of Instants Chavirés. People who (usually) work there are busy going through years of archives to maybe put together a compilation. What form that will take is up in the air (hard to fit even a narrow selection on a CD)
  4:28pm
ruth:

Me and a partner had a business shooting video of bands starting in the late 80s. most people were using super 8 if anything and super 8 film only has like 3 minute reels. So when VHS came out and the sound was really good on that big tape and you could tape the whole show... A wonder I'm not totally deaf!

@Doug-the crack house was literally next door...it was always a joy having our toddler discover a used syringe/needle on the sidewalk (of course, eventually it was "emptied", renovated, and became coops).
