Lincoln has more famous quotes, though. Hi!

Teitelbaum passed, but not from the virus. Fuck that shit, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Sam Segal:

Ah man, that's right Dean. Too many to keep track of. I have a couple Richard Teitelbaum albums in my collection. I'll need to revisit them and cue some up for next week.
  10:14pm

That Ellis track featured Branford and Jason. What a family.

@Coel, with the price of oil these days, I'm thinking of going back to the Lincoln!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
ParUbi:

have a new speaker setup. i can actually hear that baseline!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Sam Segal:

Hearing the baseline is going to be key this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
ParUbi:

I bet it'll serve as a metaphor for a number of useful things
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

Seriously, I was using a novelty speaker for basement listening. I would have no idea that the double bass existed with that thing

"The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is hard to verify their authenticity." --Abraham Lincoln

I've always said Lincoln was our most clairvoyant president, and this proves it, Ike!

Lincoln didn't drive a lincoln. he must've known something many others didn't know.

Hello everyone, rode the train in vein and ended up having to saddle a horse and walk back. When you mess with the Rorschach you get the hooves. That clash though reminds me that this jazz is nice (and has been nice the whole time crafting this comment)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm

Well crafted, Chris! Welcome.

The internet did not introduce the problem of verification of quotes. Goddammit, people.

Satandamnit, Dean, the verification of quotes is not necessarily a problem.

Thank you for digging out the Marsalis recording with his New Orleans peers. I find it of special interest above his recent recordings with his sons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm

Were you the one who recommended that one a couple weeks ago, WR? I was trying to remember who mentioned it on here.
  10:50pm
Chris Farrell:

Im eagerly looking forward to when Minnesota has a secure antibody test for COVID. I’m under the impression (as of now) that I might have had a version of it and can contribute antibodies (if they are still active). Until then sheltered in place and semi-quarantined.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Sam Segal:

Hey, Franco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Sam Segal:

Are you feeling better now, Chris?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
coelacanth∅:

Chris i think i might've had it take residence in my body around 4 weeks ago. the antibody treatment is a double-edged sword though.
...i guess it's useful in a life-threatening crisis situation; but that's about it. if people start using it for prevention they're fools.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Franco Twinkie:

Chris, you're relatively young, right?

Good evening everyone
  11:01pm
Chris Farrell:

Yeah recovered after a steroid (I was blood tested at the hospital in February so probably was not COVID) but still a lingering belly cough that I am hoping exercising will make that better. Thanks for asking.

Yeah still in my 20s (27) Franco. It was the sickest I had been in awhile but I don’t want to start any alarmism or falsehoods for any Minnesota based residents who might be listening. I also didnt have a fever, cough and sore throat were the main things.

Don't think I've heard this Logan recording before. Grabbed my attention, digging it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm

One of the few he released during his 2000s return to the scene. It's really excellent all the way through.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:07pm

RE: the Marsalis, I did post link to similar record on discogs.

Chris Farrell:

My fathers birthday also hailed on Easter this year so I wished him Merry Christmas when I woke up and we had cake. Lol

That was a good transition :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Sam Segal:

My mistake. This is actually Gary Peacock on bass not Henry Grimes. Good tune nonetheless. Grimes was on a number of other recordings with Ayler.
  11:14pm
Dean:

Peacock, with DeJohnette and Jarrett... Perfection, as I hear it.

But I feel the loss of Grimes, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Sam Segal:

With you there, Dean. I love every standards trio recording I hear.
  11:16pm
Dean:

Absolutely. And, frankly, I'm predisposed not to like them. But I can't pretend their music isn't sublime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Sam Segal:

I've been listening to a lot of Jarrett's Bach recordings recently as well. Your thoughts on those, Dean?
  11:20pm
Dean:

Yep, he's a musician without limits. I'm less familiar with his Bach, but his Shostakovich 48 is *unbelievable*. His Handel keyboard concertos are gorgeous.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

really enjoying this set!
  11:23pm
Dean:

Don't get me wrong. Bach is perhaps my favorite composer. I just don't know Jarrett's traversals.
  11:26pm
Dean:

Bed music sacred steel gospel from Arhoolie? That label resides at a record store a mile or so from my house. They've been closed for weeks now, and man, I miss dropping by on a lark.
  11:31pm
Dean:

Er, Handel keyboard *sonatas*. Solo keyboard. Luscious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm

Hi. Mate out for the home stretch. I see you played some Giuseppi Logan, so I'll post the link yet again.

Heard Rudd with Lacy at McCabe's, the guitar store in LA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Sam Segal:

The bed music is "Peace in the Valley" by Rev. Lonnie Farris from a Tompkins Square gospel comp called Fire in My Bones. I think Rev. Lonnie Farris may have also shown up on that Arhoolie release though.
  11:33pm
Dean:

Many Arhoolie releases. Quite a series.

Right on. Thank you for dropping that link, Doc!

Was playing a Rudd/Marshall Allen/Danny Ray Thompson/Jamie Daft/Trevor Dunn/Balazs Pandi record earlier today, Ceremonial Healing (3 LP, Rare Noise Records, very nice)
  11:40pm
Dean:

Once and for all, a correction to my reference to Jarrett's Handel. Not concertos, not sonatas. Suites: https://www.discogs.com/H%C3%A4ndel-Keith-Jarrett-Suites-For-Keyboard/release/3386482
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm

(I wish all vinyl releases would include a digital download, like to have both. Try to buy from Bandcamp, if possible, for that, And other, reasons)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm

The Jarrett classical stuff is very nice (tho my untrained,non-expert ears).

Had to do family exercise time, keeping us almost sane.

I think, I hope I have this Roswell Rudd recording on LP in storage. Hoping to get all my LPs out of storage by next year. Meanwhile thank you Sam & doctorjazz & the rest of the WFMU denizens.

I like the Jarrett harpsichord recording of Bach's French Suites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
doctorjazz:

I have this on vinyl as well, haven't heard it in a kazillion years!
  11:46pm
Dean:

Those are on my "must have" list, for sure. I've been acquiring the complete Bach solo keyboard works by Benjamin Alard on HMU. Harpsichord, clavichord, organ...the works.
  11:47pm
Dean:

The Handel suites are on piano, by the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm

Doesn't actually sound like a Hawkins OR a Rollins...Rollins was thinking of the New Thing, but he never really jumped in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm

Have Motion on vinyl as well (and the Rudd), but haven't Greasers then in ages.

(Haven't heard them, that should read...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm

Truth is, to my ears, Konitz lost a whole lot the last decade or more he was playing (not that he wasn't entitled, at 80 plus). But the stuff before that was terrific, adventurous, individual.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm

Don't know a ton about Bill Connors, sounds nice here (as much as he gets to play)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
Sam Segal:

I'm sure you're right about Lee's later recordings, Doc. It does remind me of a nice line in this recent Washington Post piece about the impact of COVID on the jazz community.

"So while many of us would be delighted to live 92 years on this Earth, it still hurts to lose Konitz at that age. Across the final decade of his life, the alto-saxophonist was still playing, still performing, still starting — all while drawing on an inventory of life experience that grew deeper by the minute." www.washingtonpost.com...

It's supposed to be terrible to die not able to breath, like drowning slowly, that's what it's supposed to be like. As a consolation, once you get to the point of being on a respirator, you're heavily sedated, so likely not as aware of all that.
