Jeffrey - I just looked up the odds of winning the jackpot in the US. They are around 1 in 300 million, so your $500 reduces this dramatically to 1 in 600,000. Factor in all the lucky charms, prayers, incantations and positive focus and this could reduce the odds even further.

More traffic means people going back to work and also commerce. The times I was traveling was in rush hour though. So definitely back to work which is what we need to see. I just know that will eventually mean more businesses like ours will start to pick up again. I’ve been is several neighborhoods and saw blocks of parked taxis. That’s bad for the consumer and the industry. Hopefully must of the yellow and green cabs are leased daily not owner operator

Mortgage payments and rents are suspended. That’s not true?

Rent is not suspended.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41am

Ignatatus: yes, the only way we're going to move forward (as a race of beings on a planet) is together. Yes, there is a lot of finger-pointing now. However, as someone pointed out to me that the Renaissance came after the Black Plague, there has to be a reckoning of what worked during this time and what didn't. This is a necessary step in order to make change...

Ignatatus666, I think they have an eviction moratorium but not a rent/mortgage one. (NY State.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44am
Jeffrey Davison:

The leaders in NY need to do more, as the eviction suspension, while welcome, isn't near enough. Nor are the mortgage deferments, as people with no income won't be able to pay the 4-month lump sum payment at the end of the deferment, with no income having come in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44am
Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning, Gavin in Bristol, and Kevin-san.
Avatar 7:47am
Ignatatus666:

The rent of course should be suspended and not expected all at once. The protection for tenants would be the back rent broken down for a year and added to the those months rent. With the mortgage the payments should be added to the back end of the payment schedule so there are no penalties and no 3/4 months mortgage payment up front.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48am
Jeffrey Davison:

As far as I know, there is no rent, mortgage or condo payment suspension or relief. I guess one of the tricky parts is that with a renter, there isn't a back end, necessarily, as the lease has an expiration, unless landlord and tenant agree to a three month extension after the term of the lease.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49am
EG_Astro:

Asking tenants to pay 2x the rent for however months it takes them to "pay it back"? And what if a tenant needs or wants to move? There isn't a back end like a loan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49am
Jeffrey Davison:

EG_Astro...yeah, that's a sticky wicket.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51am
EG_Astro:

It's a lot to consider and figure out, but what folks need is relief so we don't have people deciding btwn food or rent, and going out unnecessarily.

You said it @Jeffrey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53am
EG_Astro:

You don't go around gutting the state budget however as we are seeing in NY. It's a shame. : /

The great unknown is if people who were laid off or furloughed will have jobs, or if the job is waiting, when we will all go back to work, and even then, how long before people begin to make a similar amount to what they had been making. This is especially true for self-employed, gig workers, waiters, etc, etc...

As someone who has worked in the food business since 1980, I know that many are underpaid, have no union representation, work hourly, and deal with crap that many people can't imagine. That being said, I can't imagine being a doctor or nurse or health care worker now.
If you have Netflix, and want to see an amazing show, watch Chef's Table. Each episode features one chef, and the story of how they got to where they are. Especially poignant now, as most of us can't eat in restaurants, and of course many restaurants are closed. It's a deep and emotional series, and a reminder of what we've lost, either temporarily or permanently, as many places won't make it.

fred: you may be right, unfortunately. However, not all of these places can be converted to chain stores (not even close), and in a rational world, a bit of help would mean that these places could be kept alive (given what drinks cost in clubs, some would recover more quickly!). Some clubs may be able to weather a closure of a month or two, but longer than that? Seems iffy, to say the least. And afterwards, how will clubs reopen, and how many will venture out as they once did?

I hear you Ignatatus666. Agreed, all these people are in financial straits.Sorry to hear about your brother. That really sucks. My sister is a nurse, and had fatigue last week but because no fever or cough, they won't test her. They have a lot of workers already out, so the hospital actually doesn't want to test, rather not know if their workers are themselves ill.

I'm glad that Amazon is delivering so much stuff during this crisis, but it is coming at a great cost, to the fabric of society. They're clearly too powerful.

i am not even sure that the line is in (my favorite) Hammet book - it might be attributable to john huston??

Good morning everyone. Nice quiet atmosphere JD. All the best to you all, figuring out how this world-predicament shakes out for each of us, in the coming months and years. We're going to see a lot of change. I'll remember when we met at this crossroads, and I'll carry good thoughts with me, down the road.

Interesting fact, I played this song exactly 5 years ago. Also, Tift was a guest on my show in 2013. One of my favorite sessions. Great songwriter and singer and a lovely person.

Hi everyone

clarke: yes, plenty of rediscoveries, but limited to CDs now. Have to see how I can play downloads (though I don't have many) and while some say that I can add tracks from the web, others say I need a second computer to do so. Still have to check.

Anyone know where to find Precious Bloods music?
  8:51am

well, there are MANY shows that could come straight from your cd's!! don't rush into anything, ha ha. what i was getting at is that the shows are really great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am

Grilbert: tough to find. That CDr was pretty limited, and long out of print. None for sale on Discogs at present.
clarke: ha, thanks! Not rushing, no...
