Avatar 🥊 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

My favorite was Between the Bridges, used to be the only bar in DUMBO and it was a dive. Got torn down in 2003 for a condo building, but according to the owner there'd been a bar at that spot continuously since the 19th century.

Jake: Yeah, I was seriously bummed to hear about Frank's.

A lot of the good one are closing. hanks saloon, franks, the abbey in billyburg. Smiths aka smittys of 5th ave is good classic dive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Heavy Chevy:

Liquid Love is no longer but the bar Lunatico in bedstuy somehow procured their amazing signage and has it above their bar
  10:19pm

@Handy: That is not really a dive. More of an old school Irish bar kinda like the Carriage House on 7th.
Avatar 🥊 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm

  10:21pm

Frank’s was not Coronavirus: “The final day will be April 10, 2020, so get over there for your final drinks and photos with old friends. 660 Fulton Street, which housed the local bar and dance club was sold by the family and is closing after nearly three generations of operation in Fort Greene.”

So that means that they sold before they closed, just Frank’s closure was hastened by it all.

Avatar 🥊 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Handy Haversack:

Irene's is just about the only divey place left in Gpoint. (Not contradicting you Jake -- typed before I saw your post. SV is good; just not ... a dive the way sometimes you want a dive.) Solid local and Polish place. Montero's on Atlantic I think is still going.

@ Carmichael Sorry! I thought you were in Florida. Didn't mean to reference Wacko's to one who hasn't beheld it's bizarre signage.
Avatar 🥊 Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
mariano:

Montero's been there since the 30s or 40s I think. Apparently was a sailor dive when the waterfront was busier commercially.
  10:27pm
Bill C:

I was in Freddy’s but I think the basketball arena took it out.
Avatar 🥊 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Handy Haversack:

@Bill C: It moved south a ways. Still solid.
  10:29pm
JakeGould:

@Handy: Oh! Montero's! It is still there and still technically a dive, but when I lived near there I would occasionally go there, have a drink, the place is dead quite and then some of the rich d-bags who moved into the neighborhood would have their “Let’s get drunk on our bachelor/bachellorette night!” there and the place was insufferable.
Avatar 🥊 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Handy Haversack:

Kate's played at Freddy's. It's not as cheap as it was in the old place, but it's solid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

Thanks for the info, guys. Hope I can check out of your suggestions out next year.
  10:29pm
Bill C:

Can’t wait to visit again sometime. Montero’s sounds interesting.
  10:30pm
JakeGould:

@BillC: Yeah, the stupid arena had the building torn down, but they moved into Park Slope South on 5th Avenue and is still a decent place. In fact I will say — as long as they survive this shut down — they are the best divey bar to get to in that part of Brooklyn.

O’Connors yes! Not familiar with the other one. I try to hit them when I stay in Manhattan. Bars and writing about them are kind of a hobby.
Avatar 🥊 Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Handy Haversack:

@Jake (10:29): Yeah, the chock-full-of-assholes surges are a borough- (city-?) wide problem. My circle of tolerable bars in Gpoint keeps shrinking.

Brew Inn, while small, actually has a nice feel sometimes -- and has a $3 pint!

Avatar 🥊 Swag For Life Member 10:38pm

Jimmy's Corner near Times Square is a surprisingly wonderful place.
  10:39pm
JakeGould:

@BillC: Well… They are both gone! Long gone actually. Most of 5th Avenue in Park Slope is disturbingly gentrified from what I recall even in the early 1990s. But Freddy’s is just past the Prospect Expressway so the area is still “real” or whatever.

For anyone reading this who has not been to NYC in a while or is nostalgic for a NYC of the past, pretty much all of the real dive bars in NYC are gone. And the few that remain are very scattered. And Coronavirus closures only amplify it.

My advice is these are really the only remaining “dive” kinda places I hope survive this all:

• Irish Haven (Sunset Park)
• Freddy’s (South Slope)
• Capri Social Club (Greenpoint)
• Soccer Tavern (Sunset Park)

There was the Blarney Stone in Midtown, a real holdout from the old days. On 3rd Ave around 45th. Only reason I know it is because I had an ongoing freelance gig in the area and used to get my (incredibly cheap) lunch from there. The inside could've been a Tom Waits album cover, looked like they hadn't done anything to the place since the 70s. The hardcore daytime drinkers, TV always tuned to the horse races, and a pretty damn good burger.
