AnAnonymousParty:

Isn't working at home great? I was on a conference call today where someone's dog started barking in the background, then someone else's dog heard that dog and so we had two dogs barking at each other over a conference call. Presumably they we complaing about whether or not they could hear each other barking at each other, over the humans on the call complaining about the dogs barking. I wanted to shout 'squirrel' so bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm

@Stevel, I bugged my dog in solidarity. One eye cracked open but is ... slowly ... closing ... again ...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
mndave:

@AnAnonymousParty, I mute my call and say "go git the bunny" and that'll distract my dog for a good ten. What really grinds my gears is hearing other people's message alert sounds on a call, or bird/outdoor sounds suggesting they have nicer weather than me

Irwin, I think the dog feels some of that -- he's tired of music always being on!

Brainiac, hello mate. Ah, you put me in an awkward position here. I am forced to expose myself, in that I actually quite like Billy Joel. I kept quiet when everyone was piling on during Ken’s show recently, but I’m quite fond of him. So I’m going to have to say Uptown Girl because I was quite disappointed when it came out because it seemed popcrapulous. I’m going to plug his raw meat based pronto metal power due Attila too!

I don't enjoy most Billy Joel songs, but the man has a rare, undeniable gift for composing and recording music with broad popular (read: commercial) appeal, and he's done it consistently over several decades. He's worked for his success.

I have a vague memory of a brief time when Billy Joel was seen as being in the same phylum as Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson, but I was in like 5th grade and maybe my memory's playing tricks. When I first heard "You May Be Right" I filed it away in my 11-year-old head as a new wave song.

A few years ago PBS ran a Billy Joel concert in London from the mid-70s. I watched part of it, and I was amazed at how orchestral his relatively small band sounded, especially for the era. One guy in particular was really impressive, switched between keyboards, horns, and reeds.

i really can't stand most of Billy Joel's music, but he's had moments of brilliance...at least in regard to songcraft. "you may be right" was not one of those. trying to capitalize on the new wave was like peter paul & mary singing about how they dig rock and roll music; or my beloved kinks trying to jump on both the disco and the new wave bandwagon at once with that abomination,"superman".
...but then i mostly can't stand Frank Sinatra also.
