Kris slept like crap last night and feeling it. I’ll catch up in the archive. Have a good show.
Avatar 9:50pm
Kris Holmes:

Ok Matt, your presence will be missed.

Connected. Interested to hear your take on this.
Avatar 10:05pm
Kris Holmes:

I am a huge Little Richard fan & really the biggest problem here is having to reign it into this first hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm
chresti:

Hi Kris and homers!
Avatar 10:06pm
Kris Holmes:

Hi Chresti, how are you guys doing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm

greetings Kris and all
Avatar 10:15pm
Kris Holmes:

Hi Coel, welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
coelacanth∅:

stoked to hear a legit Little Richard tribute
Avatar 10:18pm
Kris Holmes:

I am gonna do my best
🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
WR:

I had figured you would not be playing many of the initial Specialty hits which everyone already has on re-issue, right everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Little Danny:

Hi Kris 'n' all
🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
WR:

And where did Paul McCartney get his whooos...
🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
WR:

That Green Power song is interesting, Little Richard doing a James Brown thing.
Avatar 10:26pm
Kris Holmes:

exactly, Paul got his from Richard!
Avatar 10:27pm
Kris Holmes:

Green Power is great, love that cut
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Little Danny:

These LR Brunswick sides are cool. And seemingly forgotten about.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
WR:

I've stopped looking up release details, can do that later. These are so good I need to fully focus on what I'm hearing.
Avatar 10:29pm
Kris Holmes:

Hi Dan, yes, agreed, this is the only one I have :-(
Avatar 10:29pm
Kris Holmes:

We're around 1964 right now WR
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
coelacanth∅:

i once said something along the lines of Little Richard had about 15 great songs and ...please forgive me if it was here or on cool blue flame but i think it was Larry Grogan said oh no you haven't heard enough Little Richard then, and said he'd do a dedicated show. if he did that i missed it.
Avatar 10:32pm
Kris Holmes:

Ha, yeah, people only think of the rock & roll hits but there is a lot more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
coelacanth∅:

so far tonight i've only heard try some of mine
...this because it's on a Hendrix boot that i've got
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Little Danny:

@coel: It might be said that there about 15 different songs at the core of Little Richard, and that the rest are variations. That's still a better average than most.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
WR:

Who is the lady singing Baby What You Want... with him?
Avatar 10:36pm
Kris Holmes:

not sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
coelacanth∅:

maybe so Danny...i think i based that harsh judgement on considerably more ignorance than that though!
- i have a Little Richard comp and that's the number of songs on it that i don't dislike.
(i have no interest in hearing "when the saints go marching in" or by the light of the silvery moon...etc)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
doctorjazz:

Hi folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
coelacanth∅:

WooooooOOO!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Little Danny:

He was an entertainer first. I think his recorded legacy was secondary to his legacy as a performer, a lot of second-rate output got churned out in the studio.
Avatar 10:44pm
Kris Holmes:

as far as a legacy goes, a lot of legacies are built on less than his initial Specialty outburst
Avatar 10:44pm
Kris Holmes:

just listen to the band on these, hot!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
coelacanth∅:

hey dr.j!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm

... boy DID Paul owe him a lot...
Avatar 10:47pm
Kris Holmes:

Hear James Brown in this right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Franco Twinkie:

Kris, this is the shit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Little Danny:

Roy Montrell on guitar on a lotta those Specialty sides from NOLA. And Earl Palmer, drums. And Lee Allen, sax.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
doctorjazz:

Absolutely!
Avatar 10:49pm
Kris Holmes:

Thanks guys & thank you Little Richard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Little Danny:

I think "The Girl Can't Help It" remains my fave Speciality side. Very New Orleans-sounding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
coelacanth∅:

one thing i've said for most of my days is that, despite being into Chuck Berry since childhood and thusly correcting anyone who called Elvis Presley "the king of rock and roll", once i got into Little Richard (even by those aforementioned 15 songs only) he may've been "the king"!
he certainly took it to the next level.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Franco Twinkie:

How about Baby Face? His version cracks me up!
Avatar 10:56pm
Kris Holmes:

I don't think I have that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
coelacanth∅:

ahh, you've played both my favorites now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
coelacanth∅:

baby face is one of those on my compilation record that made me wonder if he only had 15 good songs!
(sorry Franco!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Little Danny:

Haha yeah "Baby Face" is a little rough
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Little Danny:

Yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Little Danny:

That drum beat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
coelacanth∅:

maybe i should hear all those again now i might feel differently
when i was like 22 i filled one side of a cassette with my favorites and haven't heard those others since then.
Avatar 11:01pm
Kris Holmes:

New Orleans, Cosimo Matassa's studio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Franco Twinkie:

I know Coel, strictly bottom of the barrel, but it still makes me laugh. Just because it's a stupid song, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah this opens that comp. blew me away at first i must've played it 3-4X/day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Little Danny:

I never realized that LR's piano is somewhat somewhat subsumed by the rest of the band here. Maybe what's why I like it. It's a bit different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Howdy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
doctorjazz:

The band is amazing!
  11:02pm
Doug Schulkind:

Roll Holmes roll!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

drums and vox up front
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

Avatar 11:03pm

The drummer on all these is just on point the whole time, such a hot band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Hey coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
coelacanth∅:

i heard John Lennon's version of rip it up first. took a few years to learn it was LR's
Avatar 11:09pm

Thanks for the LR tribute. Sounded great in the car...
🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
WR:

Thank you Kris. Particularly for the later sides.

Dean:

Only just occurred to me that Channel 3, an early '80s LA area punk band, echoed the refrain from "The Girl Can't Help It" in their superlative tune, "You Make Me Feel Cheap."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
doctorjazz:

That was fun!
Avatar 11:11pm
Kris Holmes:

glad you guys enjoyed it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
coelacanth∅:

(channel 3's best song by far too, in my opinion)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
coelacanth∅:

Loving the Betty Wright as well.
have i really only heard clean up woman by this woman?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Little Danny:

I think that was her sole national pop hit, coel, but Kris will know
Avatar 11:23pm
Kris Holmes:

Clean Up Woman was the biggie
Avatar 11:24pm
Kris Holmes:

But she is fantastic the whole way through
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Franco Twinkie:

Did you say she married King Sporty!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Little Danny:

That was news to me too Franco
Avatar 11:30pm
Kris Holmes:

I think so. Someone google if it was King Sporty or someone else?
Avatar 11:32pm
Kris Holmes:

I have been known to get my carribbean Kings & Princes confused
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Franco Twinkie:

That makes no never mind to me what she did. I just want to know about King Sporty!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
coelacanth∅:

wikipedia says yes. her 3rd marriage.

Wow, King Sporty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm

Hey Granny! How's your world?
Avatar 11:50pm

check out the song "The Wrong Girl" coming up, how on earth Clarence Reid hit on that subject matter but made it sound so stunning is beyond me
🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:55pm

Yes, didn't see that twist in Wrong Girl coming.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03am
Franco Twinkie:

She was a busy lady for sure. Thanks Kris.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:05am
WR:

Thanks Kris. Betty Wright is such a loss. Little Richard had his time. We are richer from them both.
