Listener Bob in PGH:

@ Uncle Michael - is that gif related to the infamous stop disco event?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am
fred:

A long-held view in ethno-musicology was that musicians had no individual creativity but were just playing exactly what had been handed down through generations. So their names were thought to be irrelevant. I heard that is no longer the dominant view in the field, but it's not gone either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am

Here is the commentary provided along with the download of that Suntharaphon Big Band recording:

"Dance-ready rhythms of talung and ramwong from Thailand's preeminent mid-century urban entertainers! The Suntharaphon Band was an outgrowth of the Government Public Relations Department Band. Geared for the dancehalls of 1950s Bangkok, the group played a leading role in popularizing the genres featured on this cassette; inspired by the captivating folk rhythms of south (tailing) and northeast (ramwong) Thailand, these two state-sponsored steps were intended as local responses to the international dance crazes sweeping Thai popular culture at the time, and can still be heard pumped into public areas via p.a. systems any time a traditional holiday rolls around."

A Suntharaporn (yes, -porn) Ensemble appears on this comp.: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Jazz-And-Hot-Dance-In-Thailand-1956-1967/release/3972155

Notes indicate that their tracks were recorded "TV Studios, Paholyothin Road, Bangkok, Thailand, about mid-December 1956, matinee."

Same group? I don't know.
  10:21am
Dean:

The "Ensemble" is credited for vocals. Maybe it's a sibling group.
Avatar 10:22am
TDK60:

Back then, I used to have an offish attitude to disco, not my cuppa tea. But when the anti-disco folks began I felt there was some racism in there. In the '80s I once was DJing in a club, a guy walked up to me, said "Take that disco off!" I said "No, and it's funk anyway." (Teena Marie). I later read a pro-disco rap in liner notes to Fripp's Under Heavy Manners LP in which he noted disco was dance music of oppressed people-- blacks, gays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am
Doug Schulkind:

Pretty sure that was a different band, Dean.

I think we need to give Chester Randle's Soul Senders' drummer some. He could use it.

In a perfect world Doug Schulkind would curate sounds for us every day, not just Fridays 9 to 12 ET. Oh, wait, the stream is 24 / 7 when not disrupted by various personas. Good thing they are all lovely people of taste and charm.
