McGroovey, I've listened to a lot of Iron Maiden on purpose. I think it is a good cover, but I like to hear Maiden doing their originals more. Even as an Iron Maiden fan, I find it bit lacking. It is devoid of vocal harmonies as it is only Dickinson singing, and the production doesn't translate well. Like the chopping down on the octaves in the beginning...doesn't pump me up like in the Stray version.

mariano, when I was young...or I should say where I lived, and quite possibly the world over, there was a huge divide at one point between Maiden fans and Priest fans. It was silly. I was true to Priest in those moments, but loved Maiden as well. Do you remember such nonsense?

maiden was def more popular in my experience, mr pumpy (hey!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am
Mr. Pumpy:

spod...what up? I don't know who was more popular...that would be a tough call in the NYC area in the 80s...even up til now. But it was more like people were choosing sides back then. Maybe more people did go in for Maiden if pressed. But both were hugely popular.

Mr.Pumpy...to turn nothing into a long story,
when i "broke up" with my best friend, George ~7th grade, amongst other differences we did this:

punkrock<me ... George>metal

i hated the hype, the grandness, pretense of significance; i wanted to strip music to it's core.
once he was arguing with his new friend Oliver, 'maiden or... (?- metalica? slayer??) but then they both agreed, "no one messes with priest man"
anyway i was even more of a dick then than i am now so i said i think priest sucks. just to challenge them.
i'd never even heard judas priest! i just couldn't stand the way they were worshiping these pretentious bands.
i like some of them now.

I first learned of the Electric Banana from the inner sleeve advertisements of the Butt Records records I got in the '80s (Mother Gong, Van der Graaf Generator side-project The Long Hello, the first Bill Nelson album), but I didn't know if they were good, and I hadn't yet heard the Pretty Things, so I didn't hear the Electric Bananas records. I just admired the covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am

Split Enz never quite made it to AOR radio in the early 80s, which was the only way a punk or new wave band was going to become successful in the US. Bands like Duran Duran that got heavy MTV play could cross over, don't know why it didn't happen to Enz. I saw them at a concert in Philly in the summer of 82, headliner was Squeeze (who were pretty big at the time), then Split Enz, Third World, Bush Tetras, and opening up was . . . Duran Duran!

@PJ - I recall hearing I Got You quite extensively around here on AOR FM radio - WDHA in NJ and WNEW in NYC played it pretty heavily. as far as Duran Duran - yeah they did not catch on until that fall when the Rio album was re-released in November after a 12" remix EP had caught on in US dance clubs

PJ:

@TomDash: Duran Duran wasn't the kind of thing (Roxy influenced synth disco pop) the AOR stations in Philly would normally have played, but they were so massive on MTV that I think they couldn't avoid it. Split Enz, I think, peaked a little early for I Got You to help them get the AOR radio airplay, at least in the Philly area, where I was. I did hear I Got You on the radio, but only a few times. If they had had a bigger song after that things might have been different. But in Philly, at least, the stations were very resistant to anything vaguely punk or new wave and only a handful of acts got much airplay, and there were plenty of major label bands (the Jam was probably the biggest) who never got any airplay at all.
  1:42am
PJ:

For most of my high school days, the college radio stations could barely be heard through the static, so I had to learn about most new music from reading the Village Voice, the NY Times, and, after I found it later on, Trouser Press.

@PJ: I saw that Iggy/Dinah clip on the 'Tube -- love it! So much great archival TV footage on Youtube: Mike Douglas, Midnight Special, Old Grey Whistle Test, etc. etc.
I'm sure efd would be familiar with the 707, and you're right -- 79-80 hits that sweet spot between the old-guard rock n' roll and the upcoming New Wave era, which I would be digging later on during my early 80's Navy days in San Diego.

To bring things back around, from the comments section of that Variety article about KROQ re: the origins of the phrase 'world famous...' "That was a line uttered in disbelief by a member of The Split Enz because it was such a shit hole"

Hi from Holland:

@TomDash: En Jij translates to "And You" - I tried googling some of the lyrics but no luck so far.
