Good morning DJ GG and all.

Hello! :-)

DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Aitch!! :-)

When I realised that this is where the sample came from, it blew my mind :-)

How's your day going, Aitch? :-)

Hello! Having gone through a proper MadMen psychosis/marathon recently, a rather welcome surprise, this.

Hello Photocopy Cha Cha! :-)

Hi GG et al.

@5:01 DJ GeorgyGirl: I had no knowledge about the origin of the sample before the clock struck midnight, i.e. 5 minutes ago.

I've never seen Mad Men.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm

@Photocopy - wild, isn't it? :-)

Hi GG... hello everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@notsoKWYET - hello, lovely!! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The writing of Mad Men is superb, the acting is wonderful. I don't really have enough superlatives ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Also, who doesn't love a show set in the 60s ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

What's everyone been binge-watching lately?
Avatar 5:11pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

"Dear" signal interruptions, please leave this show alone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm

Again??? I thought they'd fixed that? I know Don-O was having some problems on Friday ... :-(

@5:10 DJ GeorgyGirl: Hollywood, The End OF The F***ing World, Unorthodox, Afterlife (season 1 only, halfway there)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Let me know if there are any more or if gets severe and I'll let the engineers know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - what did you think of Hollywood?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Also I LOVED Unorthodox :-)
Avatar 5:13pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

@5:11 DJ GeorgyGirl: I think it is the internet connection, because the longer one of the two interruptions went to sheena auto-stream and back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

We've been having some technical problems on the station recently - I think so many people being housebound has put pressure on the system. Fingers crossed it calms down a bit!
Avatar 5:15pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

@5:13 DJ GeorgyGirl: I know Hollywood employs a very alternative version of events, but it could have been better; it is saved by the superb acting by everyone involved.
Avatar 5:15pm
Mr Fab:

i started watching Man Men as soon as I read about it - from the first episode on. A show set in the New York ad world in the '60s? Heck yeah! My dad actually WAS one of those mad men.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - I mean, there is literally no way any of it could have happened, which made it even more poignant. But the acting was incredible, like you say :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
StringOFperils:

I stopped watching TV entirely at the onset of the lockdown, when I found myself immersed in all of the WFMU streams. And it has been rewarding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - I didn't know that!! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm

@StringOFperils - there have been so many amazing live streams as well. All great stuff :-)

GG - I actually don't watch tv but my friend just released a show so I ended up watching it.. It is called Avocado Toast The Series and it is wonderfully complex, queer, female focused and is a multi-generational show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm

Also ... hi Mr Fab! :-)

The End Of The F***ing World I recommend to anyone, it does have its share of gore though, if not much. I think we did chat about this the other day GG. Good music choices from the popular to more obscure and lovely laconic dialogue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - yep! You did recommend that to me and it sounds perfect for me :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm

I watched too much TV a year ago; I was deathly ill for a year and a half, and sort of locked in then...and binge watching TV helped...couldn't do much else ** I'm okay now.

The Deuce was interesting....70s Time Square porn industry, and the evolution thereof
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I had my eye on that one. I shall have to do a proper search for it :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
StringOFperils:

I studied advertising design and illustration with several original Mad Men...weird culture....strayed from it after several years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I do talk about real-world ad men a bit later on in the show, but the general concensus seemed to be that Mad men was the watered down version! lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
StringOFperils:

The Chi is also good. The lives of black Americans in contemporary Chicago. A bit of mystery, a bit of everyday trials and tribulations. Family. Gangs. The lives of kids. It's well done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
StringOFperils:

Yeh, advertising eats people alive.

The first two seasons of True Detective are also good. Each of the seasons is one long story. Creepy. Disturbing. And only the States could produce that particular brand of grim violence.

There's also Ray Donovan.

this is the Beach Boys song that is hard to listen to if you think about what followed (namely Brian Wilson's breakdown). Even when I did not know much about it, the otherworldly sounds almost scared me (in a good way).

@StringOFperils - nowt wrong with a bit of a shiver! :-)

@5:31 DJ GeorgyGirl:

crap, I don't remember the said scene.
Avatar 5:32pm
Mr Fab:

Mad Men was a bit watered down, in that my father and his colleagues could have a real cynical attitude towards the public. They saw how easy it was to manipulate them. They used these dismissive terms for the general public: "the gum chewers," "Joe 6-Pack" etc..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - I don't know why but "Joe 6-Pack" tickled me! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
StringOFperils:

It's all about the rubes. It's all manipulation, even among themselves, the agency-types.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm

@notsoKWYET - it's so sultry :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm
StringOFperils:

I can't tell you about those sets and costumes in particular, but I live with an on-set hair and makeup pro, and we have a friend who is a head set carpenter. I can tell you that SO MUCH cash is expended, even in some commercial spots (let alone huge long-format dramas like Mad Men) that it's likely that none of what you saw was old or funky. It was probably produced, detail by detail, anew.
Avatar 5:41pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

Autumn Leaves (Miles Davis version) was very essential (as well as Mr. Davis' Bitches Brew) to the soundtrack of an 80s finnish dark comedy/murder mystery miniseries Musta Tuntuu. I can't recommend that - not because it wasn't excellent television, but because it'll probably be never seen anywhere again, as MTV (finnish commercial tv that is) won't pay for the use of the lovely Miles Davis & John Coltrane tracks. It is a disgrace as it is a masterpiece, written&directed by the mighty Neil Hardwick (Finland loves its British expats, what with Wigwam's Jim Pembroke and all). I saw it in a private screening 3 years ago (don't remember much from its original broadcast '85/'88) I luckily heard about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm

@StringOFperils - the work behind the scenes always astonishes me. I used to do hair and wigs and it was like the most magical of operations :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - to be fair, you had me at John Coltrane :-)

as a kid I thought there is something wrong with me as I got goosebumps from the music I loved. The Zombies is visibly doing it to me now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm
StringOFperils:

The costume stylists and their assistants often buy stuff on spec so to speak. They keep the rcpts, and return stuff after they've used it, often. For commercials.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The Zombies track is just so beautiful :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm

@StringOFperils - yeah ... most producers seem to think that hair, makeup, wardrobe etc can just pull stuff out of thin air ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm

This all weirdly evocative of being a little kid, the background music of growing up in the 60s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm

@CC - it's genuinely a great soundtrack, and this is only a small portion of it. The earlier seasons are more on the lounge side and it gets progressively folkier and more 60s pop as it goes on and heads towards 1970 :-)

Makes me miss Crouch End (that's where it is at, I lived nearby for four years)

Hornsey Town Hall has also been used for many an exterior set, both period drama and contemporary.

The latest production of Les Miserables by the BBC, again starring Dominic West, as Jean Valjean, also looks amazing. Only saw the first two hours so far. I should probably seek that out

As a half-cooked art historian and architecture-freak, I really wish I could live in London and Paris for periods of time...alas, that is unlikely....so many things to see
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

London has so many beautiful old buildings. And the tops of the buildings have all these quirky bits of architecture as well. Just such lovely things to look at.

Elizabeth:

That is crazy about The Beatles song and how much it cost and how it affected the shooting budget of Breaking Bad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
StringOFperils:

I don't know where Wolf Hall was shot, but some great period settings used in that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Elizabeth - so many people at AMC were furious because all of their budgets were cut to pay for that 30 seconds, albeit TV history. But still.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - Buckinghamshire as well. Hammer Horror, lots of TV series. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
StringOFperils:

I grew up on Hammer horror....almost every Saturday afternoon when movies were still cheap for kids, in theatres. Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, and many buxom mesmerized maidens in flimsy negligees....ah sweet youth

Now that you told about the licensing, tv series and Beatles I am wondering if the Beatles lp played over a home hi-fi unit in Heimat was a soundalike... familiar with Heimat anyone? German speakers know it of course, UK folks might know it as it made the 10th place in Channel 4's 50 Greatest TV Dramas vote.
(OK, Heimat is more a series of films in 32 episodes than tv series)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I did some horror work :-) HUGE amount of fun :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm

@Photocopy - I do remember Heimat! That was HUGE :-)

I really like this version of "Always Something There to Remind Me"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I was in West Germany when that first came out in fact :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Elizabeth - I do too! :-) I'd never heard it before Mad Men :-)

I have seen all of Heimat 1 and Heimat 2, twice. AND I saw the premiere of the third part, in a theatre here at the Toronto International Film Festival, about 4 (?) years ago, with Edgar Reitz present to field questions....he was a bit chilly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Heimat was stunning

@6:47 DJ GeorgyGirl: I have watched many times - at least compared to its overall length, wait I have not seen one of its films which is a clipshow of sorts. But hey it is 59 and half hours long....

I've got one more track left - can anyone guess what it is? ;-)
Avatar 6:51pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

@6:47 StringOFperils: I am not sure if I have seen 1 & 2 three times? hmmm. The third part is not as good, but it was severely cut down, so there is less depth to its characters and story. The "prequel" (Home from Home, 2013) was really good, surprisingly so. Wow, you got to see Herr Reitz in person.

Thank you all so much for listening today - we had some hiccups but we got through it together :-)

@6:50 DJ GeorgyGirl: something to do with a certain beverage?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm

Well, this has been much more fun than working on the exterior door I'm painting....laid out in the kitchen...like a patient, etherized upon the table, and all that etcetera...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - very good ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm

@6:52 DJ GeorgyGirl: is it the original commercial in the final episode? I never got to see it before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm

Ah yes, Home From Home is what I'm referring to as part 3...a lot has happened to me since then...I forgot

Yes Photocopy, Herr Reitz. I think he was jet-lagged, culturally displaced, and a bit non-plussed about the general glitz of the Festival. He seemed the epitome of the German.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm
