Familiar & forgotten gems from 50-plus years of music on the darker side, shoegaze, synthpop, goth, psychedelia, darkwave, with unapologetic detours into 70s pop. In a dark night of the soul, it's always 3 o'clock in the morning.

But seriously, I always add vodka when making sangria w/ fresh fruit, sort of like I add mezcal to my made from scratch micheladas (not the shite that passes for a michelada stateside...)

A year or so back (Oct. 2018: day after Nick Cave at Barclays). I officiated a friend's wedding. Another really close friend came back from (Davis) Cali for it. I sang this to him on the karaoke machine as soon as the ceremony was over. Apparently even more arresting than my performance was how passers-by on the Bay Ridge street stopped in awe and terror of what was going on inside ...
This one gets the feelings going.

Donovan has been on my mind since all of the Pretty Things / Electric Banana tributes (the band was new to me, like so many others here on WFMU, until just a couple of days ago.)
And, I'd been wondering if there was any Donovan / Mellow Yellow connection (electricAL banana.) SO, "Mellow Yellow" has been on my mind since (along with the soda.) I think yesterday, and maybe some days prior, this soda discussion has been happening. "Fresca", and other obscure beverages -- and I wanted to say "hey, what about Mello Yello?", (the soft drink.) Anyway, have been wondering what came first? Donovan, then Electric Banana, then Mello Yello seems to be the chronological order. Then I wondered (had I wondered before, in my teenage years what "Electrical Banana" meant? I guessed yesterday that i has to be a term for a vibrator, (if I hadn't concluded as much was likely years ago).
Anyway, I'd just been singing "Mellow Yellow" in my head in the shower, we especially liked the "quite right, slick!" part back in the day. Then I read the room and saw Fresca (and Zima, etc. talk again, and had to tell my story).
Thanks again, Julie for exercising my Donovan possession! (thanks for suffering through my boring story, chat. B^)
coelacanth∅:
shit, i think even 50¢ gets your profile up there as a supporter. i'd rather have that than nothing...if only for marketing purposes! (more "supporters")

Julie, anent your Twitter and What We Do in the Shadows: there was a good article in the Ringer a couple of weeks back! Really cool info on the actors.

@1:43 Julie: whoa, I just realised that was a bbc session and not from garlands, as I listened to the first three sets eyes closed and oblivious to that new tracklist (artist/band pictures and all!). Oh, what! I think I don't have that Cocteau Twins BBC sessions collection. Cue record shopping frenzy...
