@CC: basins of water are too small to be affected by the Coriolis Effect, only large bodies of water are affected. The direction of the water flow in a basin has more to do w/ the shape of the basin. (I got that question when teaching a long time ago).

from what i've read a perfect test drain in perfect test circumstances would in fact spin the opposite direction on either hemisphere, if it drained long enough for a direction to be established... but the effect is so slight that the tiniest influence by the shape of the drain, or bowl - or the tiniest influence by how the fluid entered the situation would override any hemispherical influence.

well they would, under completely neutral circumstances; but that doesn't happen. (unless you are trying to determine the answer to this question...)
tornadoes spin in the opposite direction on the opposite hemisphere, because the effect does exist.
