StringO' - I'm suer glad. Used to do that kinda usefu work many moons ago, If I can deaden the soul-erasing boredom just a whit, I've overshot my expectations.

Stanley, I promise more un-missable gems, if you just keep it tuned. And it's not true that all DJ's say that.

Interesting how so many of these alumni moved over to work with Carla Bley's projects right after this stuff, well in the early to mid 70s anyway...Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra connections I guess.

Pretty amazing the wide range of styles/grooves Shepp played in...he had a rep for his early firebrand days, but his playing palate was quite broad.

Doug Schulkind:

Archie Shepp was part of one of the greatest musical events I ever attended. In April or May 1983 a benefit concert was held to raise $$ for the great Papa Jo Jones who was ailing in the hospital. A concert was held at Irving Plaza (in NYC) that started at around 7pm and continued well past dawn. Every musician in New York and many within a short flight made it to that concert to perform. The evening was emceed by two people. Max Roach started and was relieved by Archie Shepp sometime after midnight. I don't remember the song, but one highlight was Shepp singing and accompanying himself on piano. It was a miraculous night.

Just found an announcement in the NYT. It was June 18, 1983. It cost $10 for the whole event:

"There will be a benefit for Jo Jones, the drummer with the original Count Basie orchestra, who has influenced two generations of drummers, beginning tomorrow night at 8 and running until 4 A.M. or so at Swing Plaza, Irving Place at 15th Street. Mr. Jones has been ill for some time, and the proceeds will help pay his medical expenses.

Max Roach, one of Mr. Jones's most devoted followers, who has been demonstrating Mr. Jones's techniques as part of his own performances for years, will be the host for the evening.

Among other drummers who will pay tribute to Mr. Jones are Panama Francis, Andrew Cyrille, Mel Lewis, Bob Moses, Freddie Waits, Roy Haynes, Billy Higgins, Philly Joe Jones and five-eighths of M'Boom, the percussion octet.

Also performing will be Gerry Mulligan, Doc Cheatham, Gary Bartz, Cedar Walton, Jaki Byard, Jon Hendricks, Johnny Hartman, Walter Davis, Charles Davis, Connie Crothers and Jeanne Lee. The performance will be videotaped so that it can be shown to Mr. Jones."
