  6:00pm Choggie:

..like going to a good horse race then taking a drive in the country with likker
  6:02pm stephen:

Therese or anyone, I've searched in vain for the name of a early-mid 80s pop band with female vocals that had a French sounding double name starting with the letter T (Tres-Tres?) and phonetically pronounced tur-ray—tur-ray.you played it when you were on at midnight. it was a one hit wonder at the time with a very catchy repeated hook. I don't want to interrupt the flow of your show so will include my email here. Sorry, Im just at a loss.
  6:03pm hazel:

Please don't ruin WFMU with political commentary, however well-meaning your intentions may be.

I love Alice Coltrane so much.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Rory:

I'm not going to tell you who to vote for, @hazel. But I am going to try to process what I'm thinking and feeling through this program, like I do every week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm queems:

@hazel get out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Rory:

Vote for Joe Biden err something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Matt Fiveash:

hazel- turn the radio off for ten fucking minutes if you don't like it, the music'll be right back.
  6:10pm Diamond Joe:

Vote Quimby!
  6:10pm Old Dave:

@Fox- you mean we've been steadily appropriating black and brown culture for commercial purposes for a century or more? Really?
and hazel, don't worry, every single DJ is reading a scripted pro-protest statement this last week. Which is somehow not political.
  6:12pm omg:

omg you people are so annoying
  6:12pm flashbazbo:

What about "freeform" do people not get?
  6:13pm you people:

"you people?"
  6:14pm Old Dave:

I'm old enough to recall Ron Reagan referring to me as "you people."
  6:15pm CC:

Freeform was always kind of like synonymous with freedom of speech to me?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Corey:

Thanks Therese for your humanity on top of the music. It's not like WFMU programming is happening in a vacuum. I believe there's a fundamental connection between good art/radio and giving a damn, especially now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm radioronan:

Dr John gone one year, yesterday.
  6:18pm flashbazbo:

I'll CC you on that, CC.

How can someone tune in to hear black music and want to delete politics? Or rock music, or any music.
  6:20pm BH:

not sure if "delete politics" is an autocorrect creation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Therese:

@Old Dave I'm old enough to remember that Ronald Reagan considered ketchup a vegetable and ignored AIDS for years.
  6:21pm BH:

although I could have over thought it since some autocorrect could pick delete over debate

anyways, if it's tiring to hear about certain things.. imagine how tiring it probably is to directly experience it.. so..
  6:21pm CC:

Glen played this wonderful tune today!!!
  6:21pm Joe Dolce:

Hey-a Hazel! I make-a special Stromboli for you! The best!!! But I gotta ask-a you… What’s-a matter you? Gotta no respect? What-a you think you do? What you look-a so sad? It’s-a not so bad… It’s-a nice-a place… Shaddap-a you face!
  6:22pm stephen:

been waiting for someone to play this one. 41 shots
  6:22pm Joe Dolce:

Same for Old Dave! I don’t sing-a again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Therese:

@CC if you were to draw a Venn diagram of my program and Glen's, Springsteen would be right there in the overlap. And also show tunes.
Avatar 6:24pm Hoboken Jack:

Oy, Nick K, Billy, Hazel... there's one on every messageboard. Damn, it's WFMU. Are you telling me you enjoy every SONG?? Nobody does. So you can tune out a little heartfelt commentary you disagree with. I know you can, Hazel. You have a cool name and you listen to Therese and that's a real good start.
  6:25pm flashbazbo:

I meant "delete" no autocorrect.
  6:25pm CC:

This ain't a gun...this ain't a knife... this is a wallet..!..etc...
  6:25pm andrewb:

Springsteen 2020, its not too late

  6:26pm CC:

Yes, Therese!!!
  6:26pm BH:

yeah, it took easy too soon after I sent that one to realize "hey, there's more than 1 letter difference between debate/delete"..
  6:28pm JakeGould:

Any DJ here care to share the number of minutes per show they spend talking? It’s like 10 to 15 per three hours, right?
  6:30pm BH:

I think some of the DJs do their best to drag that average down to below 10m per 3hr. Especially the overnight DJs and DJs who play the soothing sounds of marbles in blenders
  6:30pm CC:

I like hearing the DJs talk, Jake...don't you???
  6:32pm Santos L Halper:

Meanwhile that was a kickin' Can cover. Thanks Therese for that and everything else!

  6:36pm ?:

hello √√√√ Therese
  6:37pm Billy:

Therese...that's a myth about Reagan and AIDS. He, in fact was quite gay-friendly even before his presidency. And in the early years of AIDS, had people behind the scenes working on the problem---increasing AIS funding (nearly quadrupling it in 1982), and working on legislation to speed up drug research and accessibility. Where the myth arises is in that he didn't publicly mention the disease until 1985, a political decision he'd made so as not to incense the fundamentalists.
  6:38pm BH:

(runs to my bunker)
  6:42pm ?:

When the HIV/AIDS epidemic began in the 1980s, the Reagan administration's first reaction was chilling: It appeared to treat the epidemic as a joke. audio of press conferences reveals Ronald Reagan's press secretary, Larry Speakes, and members of the media joking about the HIV/AIDS epidemic — which they called "gay plague" — and laughing about one of the reporters potentially having it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Matt Fiveash:

Ah, Reagan was just pretending not to care about the gays to get re-elected! Thanks for the fact check Billy!
  6:43pm Billy:

I think I'm one of the few people who likes that Lennon/Ono album. Catchy, good R+R, politics aside.
  6:43pm phat:

Let them eat jelly beans!
  6:44pm phat:

@Billy there are quite a few people who love that album.
  6:44pm CC:

I sure hope Gaylord is in an especially reflective mood tonight?!?...
  6:47pm BH:

I guess that people forget there was a period of time when people actually did think Walter Mondale could be elected President?
  6:49pm Billy:

Phat...I remember getting that album in the "cut-out bin", a place where unknown artists and unpopular albums were sold cheap, cheap, cheap. That,'s also where I found that first NY Dolls album in 75 or 76.
  6:49pm ?:

"Ronald Reagan was completely indifferent to the fate of people with HIV and AIDS," said Sarah Schulman, an AIDS historian and English professor at the College of Staten Island.

Had the government and pharmaceutical industries tackled AIDS in the early 1980s, Schulman said it wouldn't have become a global pandemic.
  6:50pm wendy del formaggio:

Therese, can you post the URL here for the literacy program for NY youth who are incarcerated? Thank you.

  7:00pm ?:

Ronald Reagan, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease five years after he left the presidency, was actually suffering from the disease while he was in office Reagan's memory lapses and bouts of confusion in public, most visibly during the 1984 presidential debates and his 1990 Iran-Contra testimony. Incidents such as these led to speculation that he was undergoing a gradual mental decline that those around him didn’t want to admit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Zetti:

Reagan's fed defunding of mental health facilities caused the horrors of US homelessness and mass incarceration of the mentally ill. If interested... watch the doc film Belam (2019).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Handy Haversack:

@suzyhotrod, if you are still here, so glad you got a regular spot! I have to figure out a way to adjust Sundays ... but we have had a standing Sunday gaming date since the world went nuts. Nutser.

Will try to find a time to hit the Archives!

Avatar 7:02pm Fox:

If Hazel is still here?

WFMU is a freeform station kept running by asking for donations, eshewing the commerical enterprises that have eaten up most independent media outlets. That means the station, the DJs, are free to make whatever content they want, without fear of having sponsors pull their support.

Also, I do not know where you live, but the station is right across the river from Manhattan, and most of the DJs live in NYC. We are inundated by the effects of what is happening. It would be crazy to not address something that is effecting us all in a very tangible way.

Also, have you not been paying attention to the music that is being played? Like, all week? Do you like any black musicians?

I for one come to listen to WFMU as a way to decompress from obsessively checking the news, but not feel I'm taking part in some escapism that would be ignoring the very real issues going on right now, and the people who are laying their lives on the line for a better a life for ALL OF US.

Lesley Stahl was asking herself during a 1986 visit with a president she would later describe in her 2000 memoir, Reporting Live, as “shriveled” and verging on catatonic.

“Reagan didn’t seem to know who I was,” she wrote. “He gave me a distant look with those milky eyes and shook my hand weakly. Oh, my, he’s gonzo, I thought.” But a few minutes later, he snapped out of it and from that point on seemed perfectly fine. When asked, White House aides admitted to Stahl that they had witnessed similar episodes.
  7:05pm phat:

attempting to defend the Reagen administration's record on gay rights and response to AIDS is madness, sheer and utter madness.
  7:06pm wendy del formaggio:

  7:06pm BH:

should I be prepping for the days when there's a "actually George W. Bush wasn't like that" debate out there?
  7:07pm CC:

While we're still talking about Ronald Reagan let's not forget that he destroyed America by destroying the unions and deregulating everything!!!
  7:07pm Billy:

Zetti...it was CA state legislation to defund treatment that was a done deal when he took office. At the time, there was an anti-psychiatry movement among rhe leftists in CA (think One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), and the CA legislature followed suit. It was one of those bills he had to sign when he became governor.
  7:07pm Joe Dolce:

Reagan’s own son, Ron, sensed something was wrong at the time. He wrote in his 2011 book, My Father at 100: A Memoir, that he first became concerned that “something beyond mellowing” was afflicting his father three years into Reagan’s first term. Of the latter’s bumbling debate performance against Walter Mondale in 1984, the younger Reagan observed:

At 73, Ronald Reagan would be the oldest president ever re-elected. Some voters were beginning to imagine grandpa — who can never find his reading glasses — in charge of a bristling nuclear arsenal, and it was making them nervous. Worse, my father now seemed to be giving them legitimate reason for concern. My heart sank as he floundered his way through his responses, fumbling with his notes, uncharacteristically lost for words. He looked tired and bewildered.

I have never had a microwave. Every once in a while I have to use one at work, and I'm always totally clueless.

Spent the day inside but gaming with good friends. But have been sitting out back watching the sparrows with Kate and listening to Therese this past hour, and that sure is nice, too.

Hey, queems!
Avatar 7:30pm RobinSays:

"A Change..." is such a profound song. Very meaningful. Thanx for playing this, Therese.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Handy Haversack:

This apt. has *no* counter space. Or cabinets, really. So it wouldn't even be possible. I once got regifted a six-slice toaster with an *egg-poacher attachment*(!!), and I never even got to use it!

Billy:When the U.S. government’s official jobs report for May came out on Friday, it included a note at the bottom saying there had been a major “error” indicating that the unemployment rate likely should be higher than the widely reported 13.3 percent rate.
The special note said that if this “misclassification error” had not occurred, the “overall unemployment rate would have been about 3 percentage points higher than reported,” meaning the unemployment rate would be about 16.3 percent for May.

During a pandemic it's important to skew all of the numbers...in a sense, cook all the books in order to make things look brighter?!?
  7:39pm CC:

Just leave it up to all of the people to be responsible and wear masks and socially distance and open everything up and say if anything goes wrong it's because you weren't being responsible

Rory, can you give a little more information?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Matt Fiveash:

Billy, let me ask you this: what did ? say that makes you think they are trying to make the case for Joe Biden? This isn't a fucking football game.
  7:41pm Billy:

?...Yeah, I heard that, too. Seems plausible. Also, that they're understaffed, too, and their findings may reflect that. We'll see.

nothing is wrong. we are good christians
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Matt Fiveash:

Although that's kind of a wash too, since this time around we get not one but two candidates for president who are clearly in cognitive decline, thanks to Ronald Reagan shattering that particular glass ceiling
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Rory:

@Franco: Really? It’s my privacy. I don’t support people wishing death on someone else. Shut ain’t right!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm radioronan:

Great show Therese.. Heading out for a curfew free walk...Thanks skeleton crew!
  7:46pm Billy:

CC...one thjng I've learned recently, is that protesting the lockdown is dangerous, stupid and downright evil, while protesting racial injustice makes you immune to the virus. This, I've surmised by the media's disinterest in the lack of social distancing at the rallies of the past 10 days.
  7:47pm JakeGould:

“Yeah, I heard that, too. Seems plausible.” I just came back from marching on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn and there were no terrorists in the crowd. More than a few WFMU commenters and DJs have protested and supported protestors as well.

The core point here is regardless of what you agree or disagree with, you shouldn’t tell someone who is doing work for you for free (like a DJ) what to do. That’s it.

You don’t have to pay to listen and you don’t have to pay to comment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Therese:

Spoiler alert! My math was not correct. Thanks in advance to Scott Williams for his upcoming 6-minute fill-in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Handy Haversack:

See you, radioronan!
  7:48pm CC:

I do agree with you on that, Billy!!!... I think Andrew Cuomo will make a great president someday!!!

@Billy: It’s irresponsible to eat free food and then complain about… Don’t like what they fed you? Don’t eat it.

But do you see how so many people have this need to act like argumentive jerks - even when no one is actually disagreeing on the main issue? Too sad... and Professor FOX, save your breath - I’ve been listening to WFMU since, probably before you were born.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm WR:

Thank you Theresa!

You cannot uplift others by debasing yourself. Self-hatred is a mental disorder, not proof of how much you care. It won’t make you a better person or save anybody else. It’s a tool for brainwashing, the stuff of cults. Never thought I would see/hear conformity being pushed at WFMU.
