Artist Track Album Comments New Approx. start time
"Some time, when the crew is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to get out there and give it all they've got. And win just one for the Zipper. I don't know where I'll be then Doc, but I won't smell too good, that's for sure."
In other words, the Record Fair is this weekend, and if you don't come, I will interpret it as a direct violation of the never-before-discussed arrangement that I just decided we've had for quite some time.
C'mon... the Record Fair is GREAT! Honestly speaking, it's how I got involved and ultimately came to be employed by WFMU. Years ago, before I'd ever been to the studios or pledged during a marathon, I decided to volunteer at an 'FMU Record Fair (which I'd been a regular attendee at for several years prior...) to see what it was all about. The person who used to have my job (the lovely and talented and formidable Jenni Matz) was to meet me at the Pavilion for early morning setup on the first day of the Fair.
When I walked into the empty hall at shortly past 8 AM, the first thing I saw was a woman (Jenni) running at top speed directly towards me with mascara streaked across her face, demanding to know if I was the guy from A-Z Party Rental Supplies. Apparently, the company that was scheduled to deliver the 200 tables and 400 chairs that are needed for the Fair decided to not show up, causing both a major catastrophe and a major stressfest (rightfully so) for Jenni. As she threw her hands up in near disgust when I told her that I was just a volunteer, something clicked somewhere in my mind that told me I had arrived somewhere good. "I want your job someday" is what I told myself, as I watched her punch a number into her cellphone, while muttering all manner of obscenity under her breath.
And what a funny old world we live in. Jenni moved on to other pastures the following year and I got it.
And that's just the way it works at WFMU. Fate can deal a funny hand sometimes, dontcha think? So come on out and say hello. There's a reasonable chance that it could lead to you volunteering during the next marathon, making a ton of new pals with some of your same weirdo interests, and who knows what else. (Keep in mind that everyone on the air at WFMU started out by volunteering.) November 7th, 8th, and 9th. 125 West 18th Street in Manhattan. Live music from Metal Urbain, Flaming Fire, the Super Karaoke Funtime Band, and Evolution Control Committee. Two Boots Pizza, the Homespun Merri-Go-Round, icy cold beer, the video stylings of Mumbleboy, Krautrock movies, tons of other great visuals (+ free coffee!) in the A/V Lounge, and more good times than you'll reasonably have any clue what to do with.
Now don't make me say it Trenton style.
