L.A. Takedown | There Is a Drone in Griffith Park | Our Feeling of Natural High | Castle Face | 2020 | Aaron M. Olson's 4th full-length album under this moniker / Griffith Park is a large municipal park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains, in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The park covers 4,310 acres of land, making it one of the largest urban parks in North America. It is the 2nd-largest city park in California, after Mission Trails Preserve in San Diego. It has also been referred to as the Central Park of Los Angeles but is much larger, more untamed, and rugged than its New York City counterpart. After successfully investing in mining, Griffith J. Griffith purchased Rancho Los Feliz (near the Los Angeles River) in 1882 and started an ostrich farm there. Griffith donated 3,015 acres to the city of Los Angeles on December 16, 1896. Griffith set up a trust fund for the improvements he envisioned, and after his death in 1919 the city began to build what Griffith had wanted. The amphitheater, called the Greek Theatre, was completed in 1930, and Griffith Observatory was finished in 1935. Subsequent to Griffith's original gift further donations of land, city purchases, and the reversion of land from private to public have expanded the Park to its present size. | * | 0:31:24 (Pop-up)

The Transcendence Orchestra | Feeling The Spirit | Nothing Is Real | Editions Mego | 2020 | Written and produced by Anthony Child & Daniel Bean / From the album notes (on bandcamp): "In the process of relocating to Den Bosch's Willem Twee Studios, The Transcendence Orchestra let love slip deftly out of its gate and reverberate around the walls of the studio's main hall, a high ceilinged former synagogue in the city's old town. Working intensively to capture its echoes, they coaxed it to appear in pipes and strings, directed it through resonant circuits and shepherded it round the room with beaters, horns and rattles. Having returned home with the recordings, a purpose began to emerge. Through a process of extensive reconfiguration and testing it became clear that the love contained within could transform perception. Under the right circumstances, and accompanied by appropriate technology, it could serve as a map for navigating beginnings and endings. Like some distant mesmerising chant or a psychedelic folk song, it could connect us and reassure us that we can pass through the boundaries and survive. Perhaps not intact but at least whole. Here is that map, love soaked diligently into its lines, ready to guide those at a loss or reassure those willing to explore." | * | 0:50:17 (Pop-up)

Ben Johnston / Phillip Bush | II. Blues - Suite for Microtonal Piano | Microtonal Piano (by Ben Johnston) | Koch International Classics | 1997 | Ben Johnston was born in Macon, Georgia. Johnston began as a traditional composer of art music before working with Harry Partch. He helped the senior musician to build instruments and use them in the performance and recording of new compositions. Partch then arranged for Johnston to study with Darius Milhaud at Mills College (Duckworth 1995, 122). In 1952, Johnston met Cage, who invited him to come to New York to study with him in the summer. Though Johnston decided he did not have sufficient time to prepare for such studies, he did go to NY for several weeks and assisted, along with Earle Brown, in the production of Cage's eight-track tape composition, "Williams Mix." Later, in 1957 and 1959, he studied with Cage, who encouraged him to follow his desires and use traditional instruments rather than electronics or newly built instruments. Unskilled in carpentry and finding electronics unreliable, Johnston struggled with how to integrate microtonality and conventional instruments for 10 years. He also struggled with how to integrate microtones into his compositional language through a slow process of many stages. However, since 1960 Johnston had almost exclusively used a system of microtonal notation based on the rational intervals of just intonation. | 1:35:34 (Pop-up)

Also in 1997, John Balance met Thighpaulsandra at a concert. Both had been fans of each other and Balance asked him to join Coil. Men Without Hats | Safety Dance | Rhythm of Youth | MCA | 1982 | Band member, Ivan Doroschuk, has explained that "The Safety Dance" is a protest against bouncers prohibiting dancers from pogoing to 1980s new wave music in clubs when disco was dying and new wave was up and coming. New wave dancing, especially pogoing, was different from disco dancing, because it was done individually instead of with partners and involved holding the torso rigid and thrashing about. To uninformed bystanders this could look dangerous, especially if pogoers accidentally bounced into one another (the more deliberately violent evolution of pogoing is slamdancing). The bouncers did not like pogoing so they would tell pogoers to stop or be kicked out of the club. Thus, the song is a protest and a call for freedom of expression. / debut album / Ivan Doroschuk (vocals, guitar, percussion, piano), Daniel A. Vermette (acoustic guitar), Michel Jerome (castanets), Colin Doroschuk (guitar), Stefan Doroschuk (guitar & violin), Martin Cartier (percussion) Piano, Percussion – Allan McCarthy* | 2:48:49 (Pop-up)

Reminds me of the time I (almost) died laughing. My pal and I had been invited to a celebratory dinner, at which the chef had worked on the famous QE2 cuise ship. The hype leading up to the meal had built up to such a peak that when the waiter came round to take our order and proudly reminded us of the guest chef my pal retorted "Yeah, bacon and eggs for fifteen hundred coming right up"! I laughed so loud my beer shot out of my nose!
