Well, dark brown sugar is useful for baking and marinades, while light brown sugar is useful for nothing…maybe alcoholic drinks whose appearance counts, about which I know nothing.
As far as I know, the processed stuff (as opposed to raw or turbinado) is just white sugar to which molasses has been added back, so you could get light brown by adding white to dark brown.

And I won’t have it!
Is that clear?
You are a bunch of girls who thinks in terms of nations,
And peoples.
There are no nations.
There are no peoples.
There are no Russians.
There are no Arabs.
There are no third worlds.
There is no west.
There is only one holistic system of systems.
One vast and immane,
Interwoven,
Interacting,
Multi-varied,
Multinational dominion
of dollars.
Petro dollars.
Electro dollars.
Muti-dollars.
Riechmarks.

Mary Roach's "Gulp" has a chapter on the relatively common need by many animals to digest food more than once. Some absorb nutrients higher-up in the system than they're broken-down, others just need a couple of rounds to get (e.g. esp.) seeds processed.
