Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from June 19, 2020 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Dan, totally get your opinion, but it's really the same across genres... loads of folks can't read/write music and in Hip Hop, many producers do. In Rap or Rock or Square Dance Calling, the voice is the instrument and quite often, learning to read/write music flows over to the musicians in the band or within a hip hop structure. Loads of hip hop producers can read/write music too, check out Adrian Younge (and associated projects, really fantastic). Loads to discover out there. Cheers!

I don't agree with the "rap is artless" view, though I used to worry that it might cause less folks to work hard mastering instruments. But, hip hop has been around since 1980 or so...i haven't noted any shortage of musicians...

Not so fast, SOFp. There's nothing wrong with contriving a system of musical production and then assessing whether or not a particular instance of it is "properly" executed. See, e.g., sonata form or Schoenberg's instructions for 12-tone serial composition. Half the fun, then, of listening to works that adopt a system is in fact in recognizing the degree to which the composer "properly" complies with it.

Martinibomb:

I hate the whole rap isn't music.. so old. music is composed of melody, harmony and rhythm. rap/hip hop is more heavily rhythm based.. that's all they even talk about is making beats etc.. the flow of the lyrics. That all rhythm/time which is HUGE HUGE thing for music U could almost argue that rappers can make music without harmony/melody but u can't make music without rhythm. Time is maybe the key ingredient.

Almost every style of music was considered by a subset to "not be real music" when it came to be.

Cheyenne:

Also, I'm gonna go ahead and be 'that guy' (tho I'm a gal) - the very notion of 'proper' music being equivalent to white/european music notation/structure/etc is a way of dismissing every other type of music and by extension normalizes white supremacy. Dan, I'm gonna guess you're white (or pass as white) and were raised in a cultural environment that normalized white culture as 'standard,' 'normal,' etc. It's ok to acknowledge that you don't like something, but think critically about your biases - even when it comes to taste in music. Peace!
  1:46pm

Cage had an even more expansive conception of music. My personal prejudice, however, is that if it doesn't involve a huge choir bellowing out from the tabernacle, it ain't music.

As Marcel M would say "What was music?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
StringOFperils:

There's nothing wrong with anything Dean. That's my point. Where the fuck do people think "proper music" comes from in the first place? It comes from folk musics. The vocal line of an ancient Greek ode. The line of the voice in Plainsong. The voice that joins the wind. Rap utilizes the voice, and it initially concentrates more on one aspect of "proper" music more than others: rhythm. Like earlier forms, it sings the news, it carries the culture, the history, the now. It represents a contemporary response to the world that has direct kinship to earlier historic forms that had a similar function. As such, it has everything to do with music, that first music, upon which much later "proper music" is based.

There are SO MANY WAYS to stay involved! Writing letters, signing petitions, calling elected officials, making art, donating to bail funds, working in journalism, coding websites and apps that help legal observers and community services. Choose a lane and get in it! <3

dan, fully valid to not like or enjoy a type of entertainment, human expression. That is opinion. Yes each person should be allowed their personal preferences and to state them. Saying something is not music or the expression is not properly made is not valid. Plus context. Some days Bee Gees totally make me retch. And it can be hard to always check one self from making personal reaction or opinion into a charge against the expression's validity. I personally draw the line and in some cases will call out homophobic or sexist or drug gang glorification.

I've read so many high praise articles/ interviews in the last couple of years regarding Janelle Monáe that l've feared hearing that recent release. Feared that I would lose trust in the sources of the hype. The track you played is enough to want me to hear more.

I was lucky enough to see Janelle Monae some years ago open for No Doubt she has an amazing live presence too. That was like 10 years ago and she was amazing then I can only imagine with that decade under her belt how much more amazing she is.

Also please if you are someone who supports organized labor do not let the police unions fool you into believing that pointing out that they are one of the biggest perpetrators of the police racism problem means that you are against labor. The people who are being killed and destroyed have more in common with you then the over militarized under trained thin blue line.

What joe said at 2:39. TOTALLY. One of the historic functions of the police has been to supress worker organizing and protest, and that continues today. If you look at Jacobin and Current Affairs online magazines you can read a lot about it.

They are the essential "secret socity" fraternity like boys club that are doing everything in their power to not have their ball taken away from them. Keep in mind, however, that the powerful--wealthy capitalists--have no issue with anti-racists embracing and including POC and the poor, so long as the opportunity to divide and conquer remains available to them, as it likely will. Capital loves the chance to market itself as anti-racist, pro-LBGTQ, inclusive.
