Franco Twinkie:

So Dean, I must extrapolate: I only saw The Mentors once, in 1980, the day before the Fourth Of July at Beyond Baroque in Venice, with Vox Pop and the Angry Samoans. They were not up to the job. Clueless and lame. But I did see The Tubes the first night they played L.A. in 1975 at The Roxy. They were the right kind of stupid!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14am
Handy Haversack:

Hell yeah, Rory!

Keilidh, Mt. Pumpy can back me up. One-line D&D recap: "Listen, Ordgar, just open the tomb, OK? Catching on fire and hanging by your ankle are going in your annual review, you know."

Slight expansion: "Many tombs were raided! Many unique and painstakingly crafted undead creations were dispatched without a second thought!

I think the closest the party had come to a TPK -- the SEXY SUPERGHAST had paralyzed everyone but Utropia and Erras -- who used a new spellbook to summon a fire elemental, which made the spellbook turn into a wall scorpion that kept shooting caustic shit at him through its cloaca as he had to concentrate on not having the elemental go berserk. I think if Xunugul had failed his last save and been brought back up as a charmed servant with ghoul powers, that might have done it for the party, but Utropia won some die rolls and took out the SEXY SUPERGHAST. And didn't even care."

That The Tubes played LA in '75 with a tune about "punks" will always give me perspective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19am

White Punks On Dope will always remind me of been at the laundromat in San Francisco that summer with all the other dirty hippies punching our fists in the air while waiting for a dryer.

I clipped my thumb nail the other day and maybe I let it grow a little too long because it felt like my thumb was a nub while using an iphone.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21am
Mr. Pumpy:

Ordgar, you best keep up appearances while raiding the fifth tomb, lest your yearly Personal Growth Goals be strewn with more than the requisite self-flagellation and net XP per quarter expectations!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22am
mariano:

First time I heard punk rock or any of the "new music", my uncle played the Ramones and the Tubes for me, and I was so shocked. How could they just let them sing about dope like that? And why did the Ramones have holes in their jeans? They're rock stars and they can't afford new jeans? The world was scary and confusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22am
Handy Haversack:

Good thing it all makes sense now, Mariano!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am
Rory:

popnihil.bandcamp.com Keilidh - I think you’ll like this label. Electro, dark synth, dark wave with some metal mixed in.
  12:24am
Dean:

First time I heard about punk rock was 1976, high school theater class, somebody mentioned that there was a band called Sex Pistols, and I was immediately taken. That winter I went to London and acquired the first Pistols' 7".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26am
mariano:

Oh, if only I'd been old enough to really enjoy that first wave, Dean. I was 9 and it was 1978.

Dean:

mariano, honest to god, being old enough to have been there at the time was quite a direct experience for me. I recall standing on Hollywood Blvd. thinking, "This is an amazing cultural turn of events, and I'm here in the middle of it." LA punk was, briefly, the best place to be.
Avatar 12:31am
Keilidh:

damn dude
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am

Yeah Dean when I got into punk/hardcore when I was a teen the SoCal bands were my favorite. What a scene. So many good bands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35am
Franco Twinkie:

T saw Patti Smith in 1976 after Horses came out. I was intrigued and very turned on by her provocative behavior. At those early shows she really taunted the audience with her blatant sexuality. I was twenty years old and very susceptible to her charm.
Avatar 12:35am
slugluv1313:

ah The Tubes!
saw them at The Palladium -- early '78? -- first date with the "ex" -- then to CBGB's for The Cramps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am
Cooh John:

Keilidh, the 70's was awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am
mariano:

I remember a few years back the Guardian (UK) did an article on the early LA punk scene. You should've seen the comments: "Oh tut tut, how could they have real punk rock in sunny California?" I was like "Dude, the homicide rate in LA in the 70s was 23/100K. Probably more murders in LA in one year than in the entire UK for the whole decade."
Avatar 12:40am
slugluv1313:

@ Franco -- was totally in awe of Patti!
finally got to see her that same year, after "Horses"
front row of McCarter (sp.?) Theatre at Princeton University
i was still in high school and did not drive, went with a pen pal who was in her early 20s -- my parents were totally freaking out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41am
Franco Twinkie:

As you know,Mariano, there was a real gulf between the Hollywood bands and the hardcore scene that followed. I was getting to old by that time to put myself in harms way, so I avoided lots of those shows. They could be pretty rough - lots of blood spilled.
Avatar 12:41am
slugluv1313:

@ mariano -- geez! even here in NYC area, we "got it" that punk would happen and flourish in LA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43am

Glad y’all got to enjoy the 70’s I envy you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44am
Rory:

The 70’s....
Avatar 12:48am
Keilidh:

this is an epic new track!!
  12:50am
Dean:

No need to envy anybody, Rory. My point is simply that I had the good fortune of deeply being immersed in episodes of the time, and I'm grateful for that being the case. Being at the Masque on a random day was utterly fulfilling. Folks were cool. Bands were great. We rode the momentum. I knew then that that sort of thing doesn't happen often, and I appreciated it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50am
Franco Twinkie:

To me, the best time was 1977 when no one really had a clear picture of what was going on. The idea that everyone was walking around in bondage pants and brothel creepers in totally ridiculous. More like people with lampshades on their heads wondering "Is this punk?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51am
coelacanth∅:

first time i heard of "punk" i still hadn't really!
...my best friend had moved away, came back to visit maybe a year later looking like peter pan dressed all in green. said are you a punk? i said fuck you you're a punk! he said no, like a "punk" it's a good thing! i didn't get it and he told me about kiss. maybe to children that was punk? i wasn't very childlike at 12 and i just thought it was 4 clowns playing submediocre songs in a lacklustre way.
- so i still hadn't learned about punk.

Gonna try to make it another hour with you fine Cryptoids. Kind of wiped out. Marching in the sun all afternoon! This is why protest movements never catch on on Mercury. If I go silent it's not from lack of will.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07am
mariano:

coela: I remember general confusion around what punk was supposed to be. A rock magazine someone brought to school sometime in the late 70s described Blue Oyster Cult as a punk band, which confused me when I first heard/saw them.

mariano, i mean -it is a stupid name! most likely meant to be derogatory at first.
next time i heard about punk: a different best friend had moved away, came back to visit wearing black leather and safety pins and little star pins...(he'd always dressed in black before that anyway)
lent me the clash's first album - which flung open the floodgates.
i'd been hearing about the sexpistols spitting on reporters and being generally unappreciative of their audiences so i had trouble reconciling these songs of justice and love with these other assholes. to me, it seemed, sexpistols were punks; clash was a garage band.

@ coelacanthø -- i think i was reading Time magazine (or something similar) when i first encountered the term "punk" -- and i was like, oh, so now this music i really like has been labelled by the media -- i was only a high school kid, but i still thought it very weird that bands as diverse as Patti Smith Band, Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, Television, Dead Boys, etc. were all categorized as the same thing -- what my jaded teenaged self LOVED about these musicians was that they did not sound like anything else, they defied classification
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am

haha mariano!
...i guess by the time the great rock and roll swindle was released i'd been submerged enough that my way didn't surprise me!
my band followed suit and did a version of "misty"

Mr. Pumpy:

@Kelihid. As you know, I enjoy droppin’ a few things that recently got me jazzed when I can. Here’s a couple of recommendations for you and all:

An old friend has come back to town…and with a lot to say! Old Man Gloom is back with another seminar to salve the soul. This disc hits hard and proper in the way Old Man Gloom do best. If you are a fan, or not, I think it would behoove anyone that digs the heavy and/or hearty to stick their fork in OMG’s Seminar IX: Darkness of Being and take a big bite of doom-laden glee. profoundlorerecords.bandcamp.com...

A throwback to a couple of years ago…Green Druid’s Ashen Blood LP has reminded me of not only why I dig them, but as the first time around did, it also reminds me of so much I like about 90s doom. True to a form that brings to mind likes of bands that rhyme with ‘bleep’ and ‘lizard’, this sucker brings the crunch and takes it’s time cutting through the cheeba fog to imprint it’s hooves on your brain. greendruid.bandcamp.com...

in 10th grade one of my biggest crushes i was to find out had an amazing record collection, and like me was in the midst of a transition toward punkrock -but she was ahead of me. she loved the ramones but to me ramones sounded like poorly produced beach boys (which i despised) or Chuck Berry. i can't even imagine that comparison now.

Best American SF/F 2019 has a story about Sister Rosetta Tharpe saving the world from white supremacy by singing the right way at alien fungus. Strongly recommended.

Also, anent Necronomidol, it turns out I had no idea what the yen-to-U.S.-dollar exchange rate is.

I'm *not* sure it's the same owner, Mariano. That neighborhood gentrified hard 10-12 yrs. ago. I work on W. 62nd (normally) and many of my softball games (when such things exist) are at Dewitt Clinton at 54th and 11th. So I walk around over there a good bit.
