Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
Hi, Mr Pumpy, northguineahills, Handy Haversack, Carmichael (which PJP song was it?), CC, Ball Hitch :), slugluv1313, WFMU's own Uncle Michael, coelacanth∅, chresti, my pal medson, Corey, and mariano!
I think it's okay to share a comment EFD shared with me, and I'll paraphrase: With all the cheese we're sending you, you won't be skeletons for long.
That is, unless Matt Warwick keeps eating it all by himself...
@Uncle Michael: Yeah, it's not exactly nationally distributed, although I think in FL Publix has it. The Cabot at Ol' Monty is Cabot Clothbound aged at Jasper Hill, which is even harder to find outside of VT and major cities.
@Carmichael: As New York Mets sportscaster (and former Pittsburgh Pirates slugger) Ralph Kiner once said on air, "On this Fathers Day, we'd like to wish all the dads out there a happy birthday!"
just looked up the McCarver/MacArthur story, and Tim reports Ralph was quick to rally from his gaffe later in the broadcast: And Ralph turns toward the camera and says, “MacArthur also said, ‘I shall return,’ and we’ll be back right after this.”
@ngh: I just checked the artist search, and only Ken has played Eyvind Kang more than I have (and that's taking into account that I've been posting a playlist for only the past eight years).
With all due respect to Mr. Julian Adderley, chocolate is the farthest thing from a nuisance to me. But I know what he's really getting at.
8:52pm
Paul in the OC:
Well it may not be the classic Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooul.....................................................................stice but these selections are showing plenT of soul, so there. Will anticipate the Stice show another time.
Hi Gaylord and all! As for "complex and Byzantine", I am glad at least that the situation was not Kafkaesque. Also: late due to dog walking and now catching up and enjoying.
Speaking of Eastern-European name puns: there's a really fun indie flick from the early 2000s filmed in DUMBO and W'burg, all the roles played by local characters. A friend of mine from Georgia (the country) played a Russian livery cab driver whose fake passport gave him the surname Pikopandropov (pick up and drop off).
so, just to be on the safe side... is it one pun per person? per show? per specified number of total posts?
- and what if i accidentally make a pun? does it count toward my pun allowance, even if i don't get it?
@Gaylord, I agree! Especially when we connect on the Wild Tchoupitoulas plane. I gather you've seen the Les Blank doc where they do a few songs, right?
Never heard this H.B. Witchi version. I know the Everything Is Everything version with Jim Pepper singing, which I think is the original. This is a pretty close reading.
@TDK60: It's really faithful to the Everything Is Everything version. I also groove deeply to Jim Pepper's later solo version, which I've also played on my show.
Happy end members did a lot of interesting work in other projects later too
9:31pm
Andres:
I think that in referencing "The Pun-isher" that Is a simple statement of fact and not the making of Pun. Might have to take it to SOTUS for a verdict.
9:31pm
Dean:
There is an entire doctoral dissertation about "Witchi Tai To" by Juan-Carlos Perea, Berkeley, 2009, according to which Pepper was a Creek and Kaw saxophonist.
I have a free form story, When 'Witchi' came out in summer '69 me and Artie in Nutley, NJ were listening, except I can't recall if it was WFMU or WBAI. Anyway, this new song came on. We phoned the DJ to rave. The DJ said that was funny; about 20 other people had just called to say the same thing! So, he played it about ten times in a row.
TDK: I was born in January of '69, so I can say I lived almost a full year in the 60s. I tell my younger friends "You wouldn't understand. You weren't there, man."
TDK i was younger than that, and my school peers never knew what i was listening to.
(except when i started reciting "i wanna get out of here" from the ballad of dwight frey, and another kid knew it from his older brother)
Joining the board late as per usual but I've been enjoying it from the first moments, also per usual (not my fault if I cook elaborate dinners for myself). Thanks Gaylord for a really interesting soundscape, per usual.
Thanks, @Andres @mariano @Chop Scott @Uncle Michael @chresti @patrick321 @Joe B @Corey @ Wendy del Formaggio @Drunken Creep @Julie @Ken From Hyde Park @coelacanth∅ and all my other radio and IRL friends! Sorry, @McGroovey!
