ultradamno: the New Orleans streetcars are the oldest continuously-operating streetcar/trolley system in the world (1835!). The ones that run on St. Charles Ave still have mahogany seats.

Yeah ... I could take the ferry more, though it will definitely take longer and involve a bus, too.

But losing the subway cuts us off from SO MUCH of the city. We can get to the beaches for $2.75 -- when the ocean is open again.

Sigh.

Choggie. S.F. Was a great walking city
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Handy Haversack:

Choggie, it sounds super dangerous, given how many cyclists and even pedestrians are killed every year in NYC.

The mayor clearly is coming down on the side of cars. He's talking about making alternate-side parking rules applicable to a max of one day per side of the street. And pushing off the congestion pricing that was supposed to go into effect. Figured oil would win in the end!
  4:31pm

Handy Haversack:

It's a super pleasant way to see the city and get around, EW. Also WILDLY inefficient, pollution-heavy, and disturbing to the river bed and wildlife (not to mention us innocent human-powered-boat enthusiasts). The ferry co. cheaps out on labor, so rather than tying up at the docks, the boats use their engine to press up against the landing. This wastes tons of fuel and creates a strong backwash that affects the riverbed and fish (and waterfowl and shoreline). And the fuel needed to power one 88-person-capacity ferry far outweighs what it takes to move an entire subway car. Mostly the ferry is a tourist mover -- and a sop to the waterfront gentrifiers.

It's undeniably pleasant. It just comes with a lot of problems.

Also, city and state were *heavily* subsidizing it, which is why new routes and stations proliferated so wildly. If that is cut back (as it is right now), not sure what will happen to the service.

Sorry -- it's a hangup of mine since I'm a river person.

Speaking of which, I am heading for the river in a few minutes. Thanks, Creamo! Thanks, Skeleshele!

Great, great show today, Creamo!
