This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hi all drummer explorers. Evan, the artwork is sorta like Dali but more raw than anything I remember from him. Seems like something from some one with vocabulary of Dali and Max Ernst or something.
Avatar 7:13pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Deffo Dali - bit Muralist - Bosch even here or there...
Avatar 7:14pm
Flash Strap:

Hi WR, it's Masson, who was just as big in the movement as Dali or Ernst, so that makes sense; at that time Surrealism was much more collectivist with regards to individual aesthetic as well
Avatar 7:15pm
Flash Strap:

Masson the great proponent of "automatic drawing", hugely influential on Dali's own Paranoiac-critical method

vocals here by Ali Harb, I believe. Guitar by Banha
Avatar 8:56pm

it might actually be Papa Touray on vocals. not super familiar with Ifang Bondi's lineup

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

First exposure to any Vocal remotely comparable probably Hugh Masekala in Monterey Pop film sounding loud & angry but soulful - always blew my mind as a little kid.
Avatar 9:02pm

This album is Bai Janha with a group of somewhat unpolished younger musicians, very loose and experimental session. I've seen a a few reviewers deride it's "amateurish" elements but I've always adored it. pulsing with vitality I say

I see (saw) some kora guys playing on subway platforms; must be noisy to focus, but most have amps.
Avatar 9:15pm
Flash Strap:

these guys from Zaire generally play for specific tribal events, such as mourning, etc. - depending on the prestige of the family involved, often for as long as a week at a time. truly endurance music. this track is a morning song - instrumental so as to give the singers a little time to rest after singing all night. this particular ensemble actually hails from Angola

Since khat has been mentioned a few times in last couple of days took a look at the wikipedia page for it. It is illegal in all forms in the USA but "In 1980, the WHO classified the plant as a drug of abuse that can produce mild to moderate psychological dependence (less than tobacco or alcohol)"

The wikipedia page has a lot of detail, no mention of needing something else to help release the active substance, "Its fresh leaves and tops are chewed or, less frequently, dried and consumed as tea, to achieve a state of euphoria and stimulation; it also has anorectic (appetite-reducing) side effects. The leaves or the soft part of the stem can be chewed with either chewing gum or fried peanuts to make it easier to chew. "
