We were in Paris for Bastille Day and went out with the crowds along the river for the fireworks. I was surprised (naively?) by the tameness of both! But there was one shirtless guy with a backpack full of cans of beer who had the sense to shout "Un, deux, trois, vive les empols!" frequently during the show. I admired him deeply.

Part of family story is that my grandmother emigrated to the US around 1900 from what is now Slovakia, then Austro-Hungary. Ran away from home, actually. First went to Bratislava, then Vienna, then by boat to Newark NJ. I've never been to Slovakia - I think it would be interesting to take the reverse journey.

Part of family story is that my grandmother emigrated to the US around 1900 from what is now Slovakia, then Austro-Hungary. Ran away from home, actually. First went to Bratislava, then Vienna, then by boat to Newark NJ. I've never been to Slovakia - I think it would be interesting to take the reverse journey.
