Yeah, really dramatic story, chresti. The only thing that saved him was that he'd become an American citizen (he'd returned to Spain to fight in the Civil War), so the family was able to get him out. Then they all got exiled to France, and it all coincidentally cost the exact same amount as they had in life savings, down to the penny.

spod, the new heavily subsidized ferry service is back to full schedules (which mainly exists for tourists, but, again, heavily subsidized). So the getting around, esp. to the west, can be a little fraught in a canoe. But worth it.

Spod, a and c. I am a trip leader in a community boating organization that tries to enable access to the water for people who don't think the waters belong to them. I also got an amazing deal on a canoe last year and so am able to store it with the org. since I use it for org. business. But we do have a fleet. It sucks this season not doing any of our public programming, which normally is the whole. damn. point.

But it is nice to be able to get out there still.

Tim: oh that's right, Alamo Sq. Actually the place I lived on Treat was the biggest dump I have ever lived in lol. I was one of several guys renting a room there, super cheap. This was in '95, and that area definitely hadn't gentrified yet. The house was complete wreck: old shag carpet so dirty it felt like plastic when you walked on it, a Withnail & I kitchen, hard to exaggerate.
