You dialed a number with an East Boston exchange, listened to an audio collage, and left your own message with the prompt “when I was a kid, there was a game we used to play.” Over two decades since Holy Tire Iron rolled over to the great voicemail in the sky, I wrote a song about the beloved party line."

Holy Tire Iron  Side One   Favoriting Work In Progress... Volume Four  Holy Tire Iron  1993  Cassette  Holy Tire Iron was a 90s audio zine project by Reverend Raye, from West Somerville, Massachusetts. One would call the phone number and listen to the stories that others had left on the machine. It was not a 900 service, so if you were outside of the Boston area you had to pay for long distance phone charges. There was no advertising, the 'message changed every day,' and was made up of what callers called in. It was active for a number of years in the early-mid 1990s. The motto was "Inspiration is only a phone call away" and Raye called it free public media and added "Would you like fries with your art?"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Kat in Chicago:

Haha, I don't think I've played any polka rap! It's mostly electronic with a tilt to "underground" techno/house, maybe half dance music, mostly new releases. It's a show that's been on the station for 20 years and has morphed from its origins (which you can infer from the show name). I've had it since 2013. I do sneak in some randomness from time to time if I feel like playing something off-genre and I can make it fit.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm

I'm not sure, solo mon. I only know a few of the station's Dead collective. A guy named Phil? I think he's no longer on this side of the veil, as the hippies would say.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
Rich in Washington:

I do like some Dead, but really, can't take much of it in one go. And my radio friends and I used to muse about an entire weekly show dedicated to one sole band. I mean, it's one of the things that inspired us to do Throbbing Gristle marathons, several day long marathons of Surrealism and Dada, etc.
RIP weird old KBOO. Those were the days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Mr Fab: yes, even worse than their music—which i REALLY TRIED to appreciate. NO. (Avant Ghetto almost was the closest i got to a true appreciation)
Avatar 2:13pm
Linda Lee:

i think it's *all* personal associations with the Dead. it's the whole trip. the music is almost incidental.
Avatar 2:13pm
Mr Fab:

Speaking of boring hippie nonsense, Spacebrother was showing me an Eagles album he creatively destroyed in his younger years. The entire cover and artwork was vandalized, except for the song that was theme to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, cuz that's cool. So see, we even like one Eagles song, ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
joe:

I've gotten over my hatred for the Dead, but except for a few tracks I don't make a habit to voluntarily listen to them. That being said I've grown above threatening bodily harm to whom ever put their music on. :) I came to realize that my disgust was more for a sector of their fan base not the band. Plus how could I hate them totally that's how the neighborhood acid supply got replenished when they came to town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

See? Even the Eagles have a redeeming factor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm
Hopey Sockmonkey:

Actually, I do own that tribute album Deadicated because Elvis Costello is on it.

exactly my point! it's not about the music.
must say i like the Dead better than i like the Eagles. associations!

SiriusXM has channels dedicated to one artist, but then they cheat by adding all these other artists in between.
Avatar 2:15pm

Dead over Eagles here as well personally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm

Man I remember when jerry died, hippie girls were throwing themselves in front of cars on haight street. Talk about associations! I’ve been all over the place w the dead stuff, lost a close friend due to the scene (they died of drug related causes) I was a baby when my parents would take me to shows though and it sparked my interest in creative quirky people. Same w Oregon country fair. Young me got to see some THINGS.

When the Black Album came out I was working at a mall record store.
