The Wire did a primer on rembetika about 16 years ago (it's online if you have a subscription). I used that w/ phonetically transliterating the titles of the records I just got to Latin script to figure out what they were about. (I don't speak Greek, but the primer hads some of the same artists and titles).

Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
chresti:

ngh, cool!
  8:17pm
Dean:

Right, GST. My point is that we *do* have clues, we're open to oddly unsettling stuff, we know that the avenues into music are multiple, and that even when we find ourselves in a musical dark alley, we know how to or at least want to suss out the territory.
  8:18pm
Labros:

oops wrong wire I guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm

I will say, Labros, when I posted some Stelios Kazantzidis to my music blog many years ago, a reader wrote in to ask me if I was inspired to post it by having just watched The Wire

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Being in over my head is one of the primary reasons I'm dedicated to WFMU. You don't want your culture all figured out - you want to be *continuously* learning - & really to be submerged & swimming in it - like it's a living current - not some stagnant or desiccated formula product. Which is perhaps no more than my hunger being more insatiable than my discomfort with being unfamiliar - or my embarassment in being under-informed can keep down...

I'm gonna push against RevRab's comment, just slightly. You also want your continuous learning to proceed in very familiar arenas. For example, I spent quality time over the weekend reading and re-reading poems of Wallace Stevens. New? No. But rewarding? Yes.

@Dean: One major takeaway from the book 'This Is Your Brain On Music' is the idea that a large part of the appeal of music is a particular balance of familiarity & novelty. Since this is a book about what music & neurology can tell us about each other - my question is if course why does the FMUvian understand this balance so differently than the mainstteam radio listener !
I don't doubt most every FMUvian has familiar favorites - I sure as hell do - but there is also this hunger of which I speak...

I don't know "This Is Your Brain...," but I do get science. Such a finding--that "appeal" is a function of "familiarity" and "novelty"--is rife with ambiguity. I'm happy to let neuroscientists conduct their experiments, but at this stage in our evolution, science doesn't "get" art. Any scientist worth her credentials will admit as much.

This is Your Brain On Music should be renamed This Is Your Brain Convincing You That There Is Any Point To This Book Whatsoever
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Haha! Its a fairly dense book - it's not reducible to that observation - if it deserves to be called one or not. I also found it interesting to learn of the part different parts of the brain play in processing a sound - & the fact it happens in so many of them...

I don't imagine it's a matter of "making it up," but I do wonder what the scope of "processing a sound" encompasses.
