I know of four separate musicians named Solomon King, a blues guy from the 1930s, a blues/R&B guy from the '50s (sometimes spelled King Soloman), a '60s soul/funk guy from California, and the singing preacher who sang with the Glory Bound Singers.

Wendy del Formaggio:

Tony, I was just thinking about that, in fact! When Morricone got that Academy Award in, what was it, 2006 or 2007, either Film Forum or MOMA showed a bunch of movies scored by Morricone. I went to see that one, and "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion" with my housemate, who was from Italy. It was a great time.
Avatar 5:07pm
Tony Coulter:

"Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion" is really, really good too -- though totally different, of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Indeed! And the score to "Investigation" is so cool. I recently listened to some of Nuova Consonanza, and could definitely hear some influences in there, especially in Morricone's use of the telephone sounds in "Investigation."
Avatar 5:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, Morricone's music had such a broad range -- so much more than the Spaghetti Western stuff, as great as that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Ooh, the "Superfly" soundtrack! I've loved this since I was a teenager. Recently I gave it a much closer listen, now that I'm no longer a teenager (well, chronologically speaking) and I was struck by the richness and complexity of Mayfield's compositions. Such beautiful music. And funky as fuck.
Avatar 5:18pm
Tony Coulter:

Agreed. There's way more depth than you'd necessarily expect from a blaxploitation soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Same with the soundtrack to Shaft. Once you get beyond the gimmicky hit single, the rest of the songs are stunning. Isaac Hayes created a fantastic score. Lotsa good bed music on there, FYI!
Avatar 5:27pm
Tony Coulter:

I kinda collect ridiculous lounge covers of the Shaft theme -- tho I won't be dipping into those today.
Avatar 5:31pm
