Scratchy vanity 45s, pilfered field recordings, muddy off-the-radio sounds, homemade congregational tapes and vintage commercial gospel throw-downs; a little preachin', a little salvation, a little audio tomfoolery.

Old Dave: that's one of the most insidious things about a segregated social order, that it becomes habit even among many people on the wrong end of the equation to enforce its norms, if only out of a sense of self-preservation. There might be some equivalence there if both groups had true social and political equality, but that's just never been the case. Not just in the South but all over the country. Everyone's capable of bigotry, but systemic racism is something only the people running the system can perpetrate.

Our class made a pilgramage to Derwent, the tiny box of a house where Lee retired. Strange stuff!
The statue was then famous because his horse, Traveller, had a hive of honey bees living inside. It was
not minded by Richmond officials at the point where that city and Atlanta were roughly the same size.
Both cities elected black officials in the late 1960s and one of them prospered... it wasn't the statue's fault!
