Good morning Really Lisa, VincentNifigance, LiXiviated Life (thank you, as always; W.W always hits the spot), and fred (yes, I can see that. I don't know why, but I think of Arvo Part also, though I can't recall if anything of his sounds like this...)

Heidee, good morning. Btw, gentle listeners, a few weeks ago I played a song by an obscure German singer, Maike Hamman, and Heidee was kind enough to translate it for me. I was happy to discover that it was poetic, not dumb! Thanks, Heidee!

Hey, Cooh John! Nice to have you here early...
FYI, all, most of the photographs I have been posting to the top of the playlist are mine, all iphone shots. Trying to gather crumbs for Instagram. This shot, taken last night, is in East Williamsburg, my neighborhood.

Tempting to say that photo says something about lives in U.S.America that's left out of the jingoism or discourse. I'd hope & wish this music for example does too. I spend a lot of time on the boards jealous of people's urban lives - I try to remember to be grateful I'm in a fairly green place. Well - when it isnt winter...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34am
Stanley:

I feel for you, Jeffrey. For me, it's stress that is always there but in these times, I think it has got stronger. I need to make more time for meditation and deep relaxation and I seriously need a break from work, the news and the pandemic.
This music is so meditative and calming. Thanks.

Revolution Rabbit...welcome. I do often envy those who live in greener places. I follow writer/photographer Amanda Petrusich on IG, and she has a house upstate. Her photos make me long for a long sojourn in a beautiful place...and NYC ain't all that beautiful, tbh. (By the way, listeners, if you don't know Amanda's work, she writes for the New Yorker. Also has some marvelous books; the one on 78 collectors is especially wonderful.) However, I think I'm a city boy through and through...

Good Morning WFMUniverse! Stress might be here for most of us. Just finished developing a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course for the community college where I teach. I hope it will run. If I can teach it, I will practice methods that will lessen my stress, for sure. Meditation, qigong are my basic ways; a steady paycheck would certainly be another. But we have this music and our collective awareness and consciousness. That helps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41am
Jeffrey Davison:

Stanley...yes, there is an underlying stress that we can't shake free of very easily, for obvious reasons. I need to follow your cue and do more relaxing/stress reducing things for myself. Good luck!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well William Irwin Thompson said the city has culture & the country has life. He also wrote of the phases of civilization's relation to the divine but I kinda think in the Age of Aquarius we're all gonna hafta individuate rather than get bailed out by messiahs or heroes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43am
Jeffrey Davison:

deborah...we seem to have hit on today's theme. Just because businesses are open and all of that, it may not lessen stress. Yes, we are now meeting up with friends for a meal, a drink...but the concern never leaves. If I get a morning or an evening, even a short while, taking photographs, it helps a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45am
Jeffrey Davison:

Rev, I guess that's one reason that a place in the city and one in the country was always the ideal. You do go mad in the city, if you're here without enough breaks. NYC, despite all of its charms, does wear you down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I was listening to great Audio Dharma podcasts by practical common sense Buddhists - my 2020 way of relating to Meditation or anything of the kind - but somehow the pandemic distracted me just when I had nothing but time. It's been such a weird space.

Hello Shrunken heads
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

One has hoped the pandemic would open the Overton window on several things by putting civilisation on pause - exposing interrelations & essential workers - supply chains, health care, environment & on & on. Resistance & denialism are great - but perhaps there will be impact too. In fact we possibly all minimalize it in our heads.
I speak of it like it will end soon & we actually don't know. Winter is coming - as the expression goes - & there's no reason to think conditions that enabled the virus won't continue...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01am
Jeffrey Davison:

Welcome, duke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03am

Rev, it is a deep wish for many of us that the pandemic will generate a new kind of world society, one that takes care of people and the planet, with an emphasis on community and creativity and a lot less on conflict and greed.
Avatar 7:06am
TDK60:

Morning Queems. / I'm not holding my breath for the rich 1% to make this city better. Especially now as eviction moratoriums are about to end, and as pandemic unemployment assistance ends.
  7:06am
Cooh John:

Thanks, Jeffrey I will look that up. Americans abroad are attracting disdain perhaps from years of arrogance. My daughter likes the Irish culture better than American culture. She will charm them forthwith.

Van Vleck Gardens is my place of meditation and peace. Luckily, I can walk there and escape the studio apartment for a while. Avis Campbell Gardens in Montclair are also stunning. Missing the museums etc. and nonstop college life. This pandemic teaches but I, like millions of others, would appreciate a break.
Love the Fordell Research Unit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08am
Jeffrey Davison:

TDK60, this is a grave issue. People have been talking about rent forgiveness (and similar issues) since day one of this, and next to nothing was done. The moratorium was helpful, but just held things in check, which clearly wasn't enough. DeBlasio danced around this issue the whole time.

  7:13am
Cooh John:

RRN63: I am with you. Just before he died, Hawking said capitalism was the biggest threat to the planet. I am waiting for the collective realization that the stimulus checks were created out of thin air.
Avatar 7:15am
Really. Lisa.:

If anyone can share a url for as close as possible to real time travel ban data, I’d be grateful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16am
Jeffrey Davison:

Cooh John, I agree with Hawking (or he with me, har har). Lots of "don't look at the man behind the curtain" going on now in D.C. The unemployment and extra $600 is what has kept the wolf away for many, many people, and as of now, that has ceased. I dread to think what is next, and another single stimulus check isn't going to stretch for another four months. The check was welcome, for sure, but not a realistic amount for anyone.

That is all, basically. It was a scroll and sometimes full screen. No one knows Daywatch but it did exist. I was an information-driven kid who had no patience for "kiddie shows" either. That is probably why I ended up hanging around colleges forever and still teaching at one.

Don't know if anyone remembers this...you'd have to be of a certain age, but as I recall the first cartoon on in the morning was about a farmer. Very primitive cartoon, for early risers like me. There was also a kind of informative show called Modern Farmer. Riveting.
  8:28am
clarke:

don't recall that - captain kangaroo was my intro and mister greenjeans to farming

but of course KC was on weekdays

TDK60:

Jeffrey, I remember those! Simple line drawings, a farmer running along, cows, the horizon in the background. How to find? / I used to go to a movie and see a Bugs Bunny cartoon before the main feature. No more.

& of course in the 1970s these franchises would give you the whole 20thCentury to that point - Marx Bros., Bugs Bunny, Popeye, Tom & Jerry - The Beatles' movies : see - they'd show everything like once a year. Monterey Pop!...stay up late & see Midnight Cowboy. As a little kid.
PBS wasn't sold out yet. Things about Modern Art. PYTHON. Animation Festival of the weird stuff...

Yes, the cartoon might have been Farmer Grey or Felix the Cat. I watched Modern Farmer, themes to Lamp Unto My Feet and would stare at test patterns. Captain Kangaroo was okay but found him cloying (even though I didn't know what the word meant).
  8:31am
clarke:

lol
  8:31am
tranewreck:

@jd. I was only allowed to watch tv on Saturday morning so woke up for the test pattern (riveting!) and then the modern farmer where I learned about wind breaks , irrigation and other valuable stuff for a 6 year old

I liked watching Julia Child on Saturdays along with cartoons.

I'm the baby of the family & stuck to stuff even when I was bothered by the cloying. Thru Captain K I was initiated into the Rabbit Mysteries. That Rabbit that didn't speak. Later I learn I'm Hare in the Chinese Calendar bit I *always* identified w/ the Rabbit. :) it's something to get this old & feel the distance...

Rev, yeah there was lots of good stuff that was freely available. I didn't like Felix the Cat. Jonny Quest, though, that seemed really cool!
tranewreck: yeah, I guess as kids we're so hungry for stimulation we'd watch anything.
Ken From Hyde Park: welcome...I didn't watch Kukla, Fran & Ollie much...

I do love seeing a cartoon before a movie. So old-fashioned. The repertory houses used to do that sometimes. Maybe the Thalia? Bleecker?
Granny! Nice to have you with us today...

In NYC/NJ there was a local TV station (WOR? at channel 9?) That had a Million Dollar Movie feature most nights. They'd play a movie twice or more each night, and for a week. I would watch them over and over.
  8:38am
clarke:

the resurgence of (some) drive-in theaters brought back the cartoon before the flick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39am
Jeffrey Davison:

I didn't watch Julia Child then, but she was astonishing. Always glad to see some old clip of that show. I did love The Galloping Gourmet! Probably a big reason that I got into the food business, though there were a number of other factors.
Yes, Million Dollar Movie!
Avatar 8:39am
deborah:

Kukla and crew had undertone jokes, I think. I agree about need for stimulation. Somehow drawing on a plastic screen with Winky Dink and You and Romper Room didn't work for me, at all. Started to love radio at an early age since I could always listen to news and talk. Then got into Clavan and Finch on WNEW and Herb Oscar Anderson on WABC, who was legendary. Okay, almost getting psyched to teach Intro to Journalism so I could talk about radio for a couple of weeks and drive students crazy. Stll love radio!

One time Million Dollar Movie had Fellini's "La Strada" on. I watched it for a week! I was a child, mayb 8, but it maybe gave me a window into the tragedy that adult life could be.

Course it characterizes my GenX we grew up with all the Boomer fallout - & in fact in my very earliest years I was all into The Beatles Saturday cartoon show! Which they won't even rerelease now it's so goofy....Batman - original Star Trek & Twilight Zone....not even broaching Monster & Sci-fi movies but that's a whole Culture. Had to realize I'm a Monster Kid just like I identify Rawker.

yeah, @Jeffrey, I know everyone here is a nice fellow.
It's all the little things we've come to accept in every day life and language that made it possible for a guy like 45 to be President, so I'm working on being better than all we did before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43am

TDK60...wow, La Strada at 8 years old. Fellini films do have a kind of innocence (or something like that) at their core, and maybe can even speak volumes to someone so young.
Avatar 8:43am
deborah:

Okay. I think cartoons were crafted to an early stereotypical "masculine" mentality. This is what boys were supposed to like etc. That is one of the reasons I could not resonate, although I did not like what girls were supposed to like. I was too busy reading or pretending I was a teacher or doctor. This goes into Women's Studies theory etc so I am not going any deeper etc. If Cartoons were late to evolve; Sesame Street was the beginning of change, in some ways.
Avatar 8:44am
deborah:

@Sylvia (France-NYC) I get it.

i figured my statement might ruffle feathers - ALL i meant is that girls and boys were different. it is not a putdown, by any means. there!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am

Sylvia, I take your point completely. All of our language is inherited, so we have to pay attention, as best we can, to the biases inherent in language and received ideas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am

deborah, and Rev: yeah, the modern cartoons (at least many) seem more equitable in terms of boy-girl depictions. And yeah, Boomer fallout is a big deal.

Like saying girls may typically have an equestrian phase & boys not so much. Is it inherent or pressure? Now we're questioning the whole construction of gender - which we should !! Did girls really like the slapstick violence of the Three Stooges but couldn't say so? Was that really what was happening? See - I'm a boy - but I wasn't into it either. I was into the Surrealism of the Marx Bros. It happens a lot of smart people are into the Three Stooges - & I can see how much was there in fact...

Thanks, merci, for your points Sylvia. Often a challenge to un-learn and try to change but we have to be open to it. / Funny how I don't believe in any of the culture of the old cartoons (violence, sexism). I enjoyed Sesame Street when it arrived, obviously pushing new ideas.

I think there's science on how male & female brains differ & perhaps especially before / as they mature. Females probably have a jump on the game in maturity - & males may have things culturally that compensate or maybe even aid them!
Of course when discussing gender - it is also always too generalized - & also too binary.
