Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

It's a Bronwynthon!

MY EARS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hello Jeff, Doug and WR and welcome to an 00s middle school dance!!!! Careful, don't step on my flares!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Hey everybody. LOVE this song! I was definitely not in middle school... maybe my 3rd job? anyway I was still listening to music!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Jeff Golick:

Not to worry. I'll just stand over here by the bleachers with my hands in my pockets, looking at my shoes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Jeff: You are playing the role of most of my male friends at the middle school dances
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Jeff Golick:

Happy to. The role I was born to play. Looking forward to filling in some musical knowledge that I'm sure I missed during the aughts.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I forgot this is the Era of Autotune
Avatar 3:12pm Dervish:

Personally, I don't believe in love after love. I accept that others believe and I respect that.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm doctorjazz:

Hi Bronwyn and Middle School students (I'm in the corner, don't dance...)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Jeff Golick:

Here we go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Bronwyn Bishop:

hey doctorjazz!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Doug Schulkind:

This program may be the most avant garde thing to happen in WFMU's history.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Jeff Golick:

Lot of firsts happening this afternoon.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:23pm WR:

Now you got me dancing! Mambo!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Yes, can't sit still!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Doug: That's the idea ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Jeff: Yes, like somehow I am the first person on WFMU to play either Ricky Martin or Lou Bega (according to Kenzo...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@WR and Lizzie: that's what i like to hear!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:36pm WR:

Your memories are brilliant addition to the program!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:39pm doctorjazz:

Reliving my daughter's Middle School years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@WR: Aw thanks! I have memories associated with the pop music of this era that I don't have with any other Top 40 music (since I stopped listening to Top 40 in the early 10s)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:42pm WR:

Yes, doctorjazz, wondering if your daughters would be enjoying this.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:46pm doctorjazz:

When I get home, I'll be putting it on (only Rebecca is home, still sheltering from COVID-19. She gave up the Manhattan apartment, nothing happening in acting now).
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:46pm doctorjazz:

Richard Thompson does a great cover of Whoops...!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Yes- he recognizes its brilliance! This song is a masterpiece imo (the little pause in "Oops I...DID IT AGAIN to your heart!" after the bridge is one of the best climaxes in all pop music)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Baby One More Time is a masterpiece too but I'll always be partial to its younger sibling
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Jeff Golick:

It's impossible to imagine what someone like Britney has experienced, going from kid actor to pop phenom to tabloid fodder...the scrutiny, the attention, what must it do to a person?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Jeff Golick:

I guess every generation gets the "Cotton Eyed Joe" that they deserve.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I can honestly say that I have seen references to the Hampsterdance for years but have never heard it. Pays to keep your computer speakers turned off.

well played Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Jeff: GASP I forgot about Cotton Eyed Joe. I loved Cotton Eyed Joe. Why did I forget to put it in this show??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Upon googling...because it came out in 1994, lol
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Jeff Golick:

'95, @BB! Outsize your zone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Bronwyn Bishop:

and yet they still played it at every school dance and we knew all the moves (I guess cuz it was only around 10 years old then)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Jeff Golick:

Producers had a pretty heavy hand, it sounds like?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Bronwyn Bishop:

which producers- on this moby song?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Jeff Golick:

Kinda everything so far...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:57pm WR:

Surprised the hamster song came out in 2000, the web meme was 98 i think. Ah, looking at Wikipedia looks like our office was meme cutting edge in 98. Then it blew up in 2000.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Jeff: Yeah producers were really pulling the strings of all these, like the auteur behind the boy band stuff and Britney was Max Martin (songwriter/producer). You can even hear Max as the dude in the spoken word bridge on Oops I Did It Again!
Avatar 4:11pm Bas NL:

Hi Bronwyn! So happy to join the pink party!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey Bas!! Great to have you here :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm fred:

Damn, missed Toni Braxton. I'm curious about what she sounds like, having spent maybe 15 minutes arguing about Braxton with a coworker before we figured out Anthony and Toni are not the same person (neither of us had heard of the other Braxton)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Fred!!! I love this story. They should really collaborate already
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm fred:

I still like Beyoncé, despite her ripping off Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, which actually turned out well as ATDK put out a site with the moves from Rosas Danst Rosas for everyone to use
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm fred:

Covering Talk Talk is a minefield. I think that's an honorable effort
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I'd listen to Gwen sing the phone book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Bronwyn Bishop:

They actually recorded this song to promote this singles album and did a cover instead of writing a new song because they were on hiatus. They listened to hundreds of 80s songs before picking that one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Lizzie: lots of Gwen in this show!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 4:49pm WR:

Back on the dance floor for Outcast!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Loving this show, Bronwyn! Yes I'm dancing!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 4:49pm doctorjazz:

Always loved this Outcast!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I am your neighbor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Bronwyn Bishop:

This is one of the greatest songs of all time!! I just realized it's been one of my favorite songs for 17 years...that's a long time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm fred:

Big Boi seems to be a Kate Bush fan, so he has good taste
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I remember being at summer camp and hearing the counselors partying when all us kids were in our cabins. They were blasting Hey Ya! We all wished we were down there dancing with them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@fred: Apparently last week he said something about collaborating with her on his upcoming album!?!?! psyched for that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm fred:

@Brownwyn: I remember getting burned with news of her collab with Prince, so I'll wait until it happens, or lawsuits do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Bronwyn Bishop:

aw, good point
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm fred:

@Bronwyn: sorry about mangling your name
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Bronwyn Bishop:

no worries!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I used to have Karaoke Revolution (does anyone remember Karaoke Revolution?) and this JoJo song was on it. Oh how we belted it out at my 11th birthday party (which I shared with another girl in my class of 10 kids who somehow had the same birthday as me)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Jeff Golick:

The hip hop has aged the best. (IMO.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm fred:

@Jeff Golick: I think Public Enemy aged very well, but that's not a good thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Yeah it definitely sounds the least dated today! I'm glad some of this music doesn't sound ridiculously dated lol (but I also love the stuff that does, like No Secrets)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 5:07pm doctorjazz:

Time for me to head home, probably catch the last hour on the stereo. Thanks, Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thank YOU for listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm fred:

@Bronwyn: It's supposed to be a dance party, no expiration date on that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Bronwyn Bishop:

true, dance parties never die!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey, wow. Nice dance party going on over here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Welcome Ken!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Jeff Golick:

I confess I was waiting for this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm fred:

Come on, they knew what you did, because they did the same
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm northguineahills:

Ok, that was 5.5 hours total sleep in the last 24 hrs. I need to get my diurnal clock in check since my job starts Lunes....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm fred:

@ngh: job implies money, sounds like good news
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm northguineahills:

*Looks at Playlist*. It's rare that I come across a playlist where I own zero records listed. Congratulations Bronwyn, achievement unlocked!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm northguineahills:

(I usually have a few during Acid Jazz Hands).
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Jeff Golick:

Here's something I just learned: "The Pussycat Dolls were created by choreographer Robin Antin and her roommate Christina Applegate in 1993."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Yes part of the point of this show was to play stuff that definitely doesn't get played often on WFMU/GTDR haha. I'm impressed that you usually own a few records I play on AJH *musical fans fist bump*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Jeff: Wow- this was really the era of prefab groups but I didn't realized Christina Applegate created one lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm northguineahills:

As a turntabilist, stoop sales, junk stores, thrift stores, and estate sales, were usual haunts I'd look for.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Oh same, I once got some really great albums out of a box that said "free" on the street in Philly, and I've gotten some really great weird stuff from the Salvation Army in Quakertown, PA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm northguineahills:

Some of the best latin/Mexi hiphop/salsa records I found were found in the bin in NYC....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm northguineahills:

Never listened to Beyonce, but I do have a single by Slim Thug (for some reason).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm northguineahills:

(bin =curbside*, been imbibing anglophile culture (ie: the beeb), the last few months.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Jeff Golick:

Somewhat surprised I've never heard this BEP song before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm northguineahills:

I saw a free concert back in 1997 where the Black Eyed Peas opened for the Village People and the B-52s (I was there for the B-52s)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm northguineahills:

(I was still an undergrad)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Jeff Golick:

Perhaps this means we're not getting "My Humps."
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I'm hoping we will be spared that
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Jeff Golick:

I don't even feel good about typing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm fred:

Tainted Love cover that doesn't own it in the 2000's? That's weird
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Bronwyn Bishop:

We are DEFINITELY not getting My Humps lmao
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

You took one for the team
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@ngh: A BEP/Village People/B-52s concert sounds INCREDIBLE, I wish I was there (I'd go for the Village People)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I like how SOS samples the song and uses the lyrics too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm northguineahills:

Rihanna is one of the few pop artists of the 2000s I find decent (even back then). I usually abhored top 40 music from the mid-90s onwards contemporariously, back when I was a music snob (I outgrew that phase).

Ok, I have some Sean Paul rekkids!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I was overcome with nostalgia when Sia brought Sean Paul back for "Cheap Thrills" in 2016. It brought me back to taking the school bus home in third grade trying to figure out what he was saying
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm northguineahills:

I brought in the year 2000, by hanging out in Jamaica, at a friend's pad on the north coast of Jamaica, away from any tourists. Hit a few dancehall clubs, that's I got adversed in patois....oddly, there were no vinyl stores,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Bronwyn Bishop:

That sounds like a great trip, I wanna go to a dancehall club in Jamaica (post quarantine trip!!!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm northguineahills:

Timbaland, a damn good producer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I somehow completely forgot that SOS samples Tainted Love despite them being two of the most famous songs of all time and the sample being so blatant. I guess SOS just has enough of its own identity in my brain that I forgot it's built around something else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Brian in UK:

Go Bronwyn, down in the dancehall listening to Chaka Demus & Pliers.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I know some Rihanna songs but not SOS - thanks
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Jeff Golick:

Timbaland + [anyone] is a hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Timbaland + Jan Terri!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Bronwyn Bishop:

im sure he could make it work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm northguineahills:

@Brian: I wish I knew there were ragga clubs, when I hit the UK (I was 17). I would disappear for a day away from my family exploring random places (I used to do it back when I was in elementary school, in Japan), made some friends, but never made it to the east end of London. (I didn't get into Jamaican music until I was 19).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm fred:

Timbaland + both Braxtons
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm northguineahills:

@Fred: Toni and Anthony? (I"d add Tyondai)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm northguineahills:

I remember Scissor Sisters playing in the bars, don't remember their Bee Gees phase....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I feel like Timbaland, Toni Braxton, Anthony Braxton, and Tyondai Braxton would be kind of like when Scott Walker, Mark Knopfler, Billy Ocean, and Evan Parker all collaborated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm northguineahills:

Phillipsburg, NJ! I digitally mapped that town! (never been there)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm fred:

@ngh: I had a 15 minute argument with a coworker before figuring out Toni and Anthony are not the same (actually Tyondai is what got us to figure out we were not talking about the same person)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm northguineahills:

@fred: I think I told you, Tyondai, used to live a few blocks from me. I'd always see him at the subway/clubs/bars. He's a super lad (and great musician).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm fred:

@Bronwyn: Do you mean the (unfortunately departed) Scott Walker or the other one?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I think WFMU needs a calypso and ska show. Who's with me??
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:22pm doctorjazz:

I'm Back, put in on at home, and, to quote Rebecca, "Oh My God, this is my jam!" I don't know what that means, but I think it's positive.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Jeff Golick:

I think Mike Sin (?) started a ska/rock steady show recently?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:23pm doctorjazz:

There IS a Ska show on another stream, I'll find it In a minute.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@doctorjazz: yes "my jam" is a good thing lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm northguineahills:

I've probably told you, but one of my best friends in Mexico City, is a professional photographer. MIA saw his page, and hired him to be her photographer (and he wasn't a fan, more into psyche noise). So, I'd get backstage passes for MIA shows.....
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:26pm doctorjazz:

: )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm northguineahills:

(and I am an MIA fan) Artist #3 I have rekkids from....
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:27pm doctorjazz:

@Lizzie, the shows seem to be multiplying like bunny rabbits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@ngh: you have the coolest life lol, I love your stories
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Bronwyn Bishop:

these songs are all my jams *hugs these songs*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm fred:

Thanks to WFMU, I preordered MIA's first album. Got me some cred. Didn't last
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm northguineahills:

@Sweet Corn Lizzie, besides the the recommendations above, Irwin, Small Change, Jesse, Doug, Sam, and others play a lot of calypso, soca, and ska....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm northguineahills:

@Bronwyn: (past tense, used to have)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Thanks everybody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm northguineahills:

fred has more cred then I could ever muster....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm fred:

Just to squander that cred: does anyone remember eighth wonder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm fred:

Or Propaganda?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:39pm doctorjazz:

Ngh reminded me, Irwin had a GREAT Calypso series he ran many years ago, called Muriel's Treasure. I'm pretty sure it can accessed in the archives (loved that series when it ran).

Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Bronwyn! Looking forward to this upcoming pivot...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm northguineahills:

Anyone else thinks this Kei$ha sounds like L'trim ("cars that go boom")?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm northguineahills:

I have every record by the Outkast (weird, I know)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Bronwyn Bishop:

We are actually going to have overtime in this show so there's a few more songs (and then Acid Jazz Hands is shorter than normal)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Jeff Golick:

I hear that a little, @ngh. Like both songs a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm northguineahills:

Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:03pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm northguineahills:
