Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Hello Jeff, Doug and WR and welcome to an 00s middle school dance!!!! Careful, don't step on my flares!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Hey everybody. LOVE this song! I was definitely not in middle school... maybe my 3rd job? anyway I was still listening to music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
Jeff Golick:

Not to worry. I'll just stand over here by the bleachers with my hands in my pockets, looking at my shoes.
Avatar 3:07pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Jeff: You are playing the role of most of my male friends at the middle school dances
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
Jeff Golick:

Happy to. The role I was born to play. Looking forward to filling in some musical knowledge that I'm sure I missed during the aughts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm

I forgot this is the Era of Autotune

Personally, I don't believe in love after love. I accept that others believe and I respect that.

Hi Bronwyn and Middle School students (I'm in the corner, don't dance...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm

Here we go.

Bronwyn Bishop:

hey doctorjazz!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
Doug Schulkind:

This program may be the most avant garde thing to happen in WFMU's history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm
Jeff Golick:

Lot of firsts happening this afternoon.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
WR:

Now you got me dancing! Mambo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Yes, can't sit still!
Avatar 3:28pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Doug: That's the idea ;)
Avatar 3:29pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Jeff: Yes, like somehow I am the first person on WFMU to play either Ricky Martin or Lou Bega (according to Kenzo...)
Avatar 3:29pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@WR and Lizzie: that's what i like to hear!!
🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
WR:

Your memories are brilliant addition to the program!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
doctorjazz:

Reliving my daughter's Middle School years.
Avatar 3:41pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@WR: Aw thanks! I have memories associated with the pop music of this era that I don't have with any other Top 40 music (since I stopped listening to Top 40 in the early 10s)
🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
WR:

Yes, doctorjazz, wondering if your daughters would be enjoying this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
doctorjazz:

When I get home, I'll be putting it on (only Rebecca is home, still sheltering from COVID-19. She gave up the Manhattan apartment, nothing happening in acting now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
doctorjazz:

Richard Thompson does a great cover of Whoops...!
Avatar 3:49pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Yes- he recognizes its brilliance! This song is a masterpiece imo (the little pause in "Oops I...DID IT AGAIN to your heart!" after the bridge is one of the best climaxes in all pop music)
Avatar 3:49pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Baby One More Time is a masterpiece too but I'll always be partial to its younger sibling
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
Jeff Golick:

It's impossible to imagine what someone like Britney has experienced, going from kid actor to pop phenom to tabloid fodder...the scrutiny, the attention, what must it do to a person?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Jeff Golick:

I guess every generation gets the "Cotton Eyed Joe" that they deserve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I can honestly say that I have seen references to the Hampsterdance for years but have never heard it. Pays to keep your computer speakers turned off.

well played Jeff!
Avatar 3:54pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Jeff: GASP I forgot about Cotton Eyed Joe. I loved Cotton Eyed Joe. Why did I forget to put it in this show??
Avatar 3:54pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Upon googling...because it came out in 1994, lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
Jeff Golick:

'95, @BB! Outsize your zone.
Avatar 3:55pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

and yet they still played it at every school dance and we knew all the moves (I guess cuz it was only around 10 years old then)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Jeff Golick:

Producers had a pretty heavy hand, it sounds like?
Avatar 3:56pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

which producers- on this moby song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Jeff Golick:

Kinda everything so far...
🎭 Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
WR:

Surprised the hamster song came out in 2000, the web meme was 98 i think. Ah, looking at Wikipedia looks like our office was meme cutting edge in 98. Then it blew up in 2000.
Avatar 4:00pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Jeff: Yeah producers were really pulling the strings of all these, like the auteur behind the boy band stuff and Britney was Max Martin (songwriter/producer). You can even hear Max as the dude in the spoken word bridge on Oops I Did It Again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
Bas NL:

Hi Bronwyn! So happy to join the pink party!
Avatar 4:11pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey Bas!! Great to have you here :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
fred:

Damn, missed Toni Braxton. I'm curious about what she sounds like, having spent maybe 15 minutes arguing about Braxton with a coworker before we figured out Anthony and Toni are not the same person (neither of us had heard of the other Braxton)
Avatar 4:15pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Fred!!! I love this story. They should really collaborate already
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm
fred:

I still like Beyoncé, despite her ripping off Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, which actually turned out well as ATDK put out a site with the moves from Rosas Danst Rosas for everyone to use
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
fred:

Covering Talk Talk is a minefield. I think that's an honorable effort
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I'd listen to Gwen sing the phone book.
Avatar 4:48pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

They actually recorded this song to promote this singles album and did a cover instead of writing a new song because they were on hiatus. They listened to hundreds of 80s songs before picking that one
Avatar 4:48pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Lizzie: lots of Gwen in this show!!
🎭 Swag For Life Member 4:49pm

Big Boi seems to be a Kate Bush fan, so he has good taste
Avatar 4:51pm

@fred: Apparently last week he said something about collaborating with her on his upcoming album!?!?! psyched for that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm

I used to have Karaoke Revolution (does anyone remember Karaoke Revolution?) and this JoJo song was on it. Oh how we belted it out at my 11th birthday party (which I shared with another girl in my class of 10 kids who somehow had the same birthday as me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
Jeff Golick:

The hip hop has aged the best. (IMO.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm
fred:

@Jeff Golick: I think Public Enemy aged very well, but that's not a good thing
Avatar 5:06pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Yeah it definitely sounds the least dated today! I'm glad some of this music doesn't sound ridiculously dated lol (but I also love the stuff that does, like No Secrets)

Here's something I just learned: "The Pussycat Dolls were created by choreographer Robin Antin and her roommate Christina Applegate in 1993."
Avatar 5:34pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Yes part of the point of this show was to play stuff that definitely doesn't get played often on WFMU/GTDR haha. I'm impressed that you usually own a few records I play on AJH *musical fans fist bump*
Avatar 5:35pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Jeff: Wow- this was really the era of prefab groups but I didn't realized Christina Applegate created one lol

I don't even feel good about typing it.

Avatar 5:53pm

@ngh: A BEP/Village People/B-52s concert sounds INCREDIBLE, I wish I was there (I'd go for the Village People)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I like how SOS samples the song and uses the lyrics too
Avatar 5:55pm
northguineahills:

Rihanna is one of the few pop artists of the 2000s I find decent (even back then). I usually abhored top 40 music from the mid-90s onwards contemporariously, back when I was a music snob (I outgrew that phase).

Ok, I have some Sean Paul rekkids!
Avatar 5:57pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I was overcome with nostalgia when Sia brought Sean Paul back for "Cheap Thrills" in 2016. It brought me back to taking the school bus home in third grade trying to figure out what he was saying
Avatar 6:00pm
northguineahills:

I brought in the year 2000, by hanging out in Jamaica, at a friend's pad on the north coast of Jamaica, away from any tourists. Hit a few dancehall clubs, that's I got adversed in patois....oddly, there were no vinyl stores,
Avatar 6:03pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

That sounds like a great trip, I wanna go to a dancehall club in Jamaica (post quarantine trip!!!)
Avatar 6:04pm
northguineahills:

Timbaland, a damn good producer!
Avatar 6:04pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I somehow completely forgot that SOS samples Tainted Love despite them being two of the most famous songs of all time and the sample being so blatant. I guess SOS just has enough of its own identity in my brain that I forgot it's built around something else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm

@Brian: I wish I knew there were ragga clubs, when I hit the UK (I was 17). I would disappear for a day away from my family exploring random places (I used to do it back when I was in elementary school, in Japan), made some friends, but never made it to the east end of London. (I didn't get into Jamaican music until I was 19).

I feel like Timbaland, Toni Braxton, Anthony Braxton, and Tyondai Braxton would be kind of like when Scott Walker, Mark Knopfler, Billy Ocean, and Evan Parker all collaborated

Phillipsburg, NJ! I digitally mapped that town! (never been there)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm

I've probably told you, but one of my best friends in Mexico City, is a professional photographer. MIA saw his page, and hired him to be her photographer (and he wasn't a fan, more into psyche noise). So, I'd get backstage passes for MIA shows.....

Ngh reminded me, Irwin had a GREAT Calypso series he ran many years ago, called Muriel's Treasure. I'm pretty sure it can accessed in the archives (loved that series when it ran).
