Tony Coulter:

Greets, all! Today's show features just one cassette release, of epic proportions.
Avatar 11:59am
Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, James!

Listener Bob in PGH:

I cannot recall, did they used to make kay-sets longer than C-120?
Avatar 12:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Don't think so -- or if so, only very rarely. This Stenshoel is a double C-90 set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
Stanley:

Hi Tony.
This show is part of my Weltanschauung.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
Ike:

Hi all. My dad always warned me to avoid 120s, saying the tape was too thin and it was more prone to snag and unravel than the others. Have no idea if that was true. I would buy some of the rare blank 110s occasionally though, for dubbing double CD sets or the like.
Avatar 12:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Stanley! Ike! Hiya! (and a belated "hiya" to Bob too!)

Yvang:

Hi Tony! Hi tape listeners!
Avatar 12:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Hola, Yvang!
Avatar 12:08pm
Tony Coulter:

As you'll seen hear, this tape is very varied in sound.
Avatar 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:

A brief pedantic note: Discogs lists this album as "Strangely Coloured Map" -- which, as you can see, is wrong. Naughty discogs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Sem:

Hello, Tape Tony, and lhissteners.

Hey there, Sssssssemmmmmmmm!
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Ha! (and ... Hey!)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Yvang:

The extra "u" probably escaped the "Weltanschauung" wor(l)d
Avatar 12:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Double ha!
  12:18pm
Dean:

Funny, as this track started I thought, this sure sounds like early New Order.
Avatar 12:19pm
Tony Coulter:

He knew what you were going to think -- that's why he chose that title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm
Ike:

Good sounds for high winds and drenching rain. The shattered remnants of Tropical Storm What's-His-Face are irritable.
Avatar 12:42pm
Tony Coulter:

FYI: this album comes in a manilla envelope, with a map glued to the outside. The two tapes are inside the envelope, without plastic shells. There are two booklets also, one of which is pictured here. Now you know (whether you wanted to or not).
Avatar 12:43pm
Tony Coulter:

There hasn't been a drop of rain here for weeks. So much for the rainy Pacific Northwest.
Avatar 12:45pm
Listening Out There:

For that reason, gardeners in the NW like to describe the climate this time of year as "modified Mediterranean"...
  12:46pm
Dean:

This time of year is brew fest time, when I'm often in Portland. It has *never* rained during the festival, always been gorgeous. But when I'm there for year-end holidays, yeah, it rains.
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey there, L.O.T.! During August, Portland can get *too* sunny, if you ask me. I miss the shade you get from NYC's tall buildings and pollution.
Avatar 1:00pm
HollyRT:

Hi TC, hi folks! Just got here but already liking what I'm hearing...
Avatar 1:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Hi, Holly! Glad you made it!
Avatar 1:03pm
Carmichael:

Heya Tony. Long time, no hear.
Avatar 1:04pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Carmichael!
Avatar 1:15pm
Carmichael:

I'll be in Portland in a couple of weeks. Glad the Feds cleared out.
Avatar 1:17pm
Tony Coulter:

So am I. Things calmed down the moment they left.
  1:19pm
Dean:

The feds departed the day after my 14YO son arrived in Portland. Coincidence?
Avatar 1:22pm
Tony Coulter:

Guess he's too much for them to handle.
  1:25pm
Dean:

'at's my boy!
Avatar 1:27pm
Carmichael:

I can leave the leaf blower at home after all ...
Avatar 1:31pm
Tony Coulter:

Of course, 100 state troopers were sent in to take over for the feds. But they're nowhere to be seen. I guess they're guarding the federal courthouse from a donut shop.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
Yvang:

leaf blower=ultimate antifa weapon?
Avatar 1:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, instead of raking up the tear gas, you just blow it to the other side of the street.
Avatar 1:35pm
Carmichael:

Tell me this isn't him: www.facebook.com...
Avatar 1:36pm
Tony Coulter:

Umm, it is. I was hiding that picture from you all.
Avatar 1:37pm
Carmichael:

Hiding in plain internet sight ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Sem:

Rapt. Mr. Stenshoel.
Avatar 1:47pm
Carmichael:

Here is a great site that talka bout the players on each song: livingarchive.doncampau.com...
Avatar 1:47pm
northguineahills:

This is a really long tape! (been working and listening on and off)>
Avatar 1:48pm
Carmichael:

And the site gave me the "aha" moment: I saw Minnesota band Boiled In Lead several times over the years. Peter's brother David Stenshoel plays in that band.
Avatar 1:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, NGH! It's so long we won't be able to hear the whole thing! I guess it's the equivalent of four (longish) LPs.
  1:50pm
Dean:

Thanks for that, Carmichael. I was wondering who was involved with this remarkable "Trotto." I have a bunch of renditions of it, all aiming for so-called authenticity. This one kicks medieval ass. It's a tribute to a broadcaster who programmed medieval music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Asheville Jon:

really enjoying the show today, great jams and such.
Avatar 1:51pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: Yes, thanks for linking to that site. As you said, all the details are there.

Have never heard Boiled in Lead....
Avatar 1:51pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Jon! Glad you're enjoying the mega-tape!
Avatar 1:54pm
Carmichael:

@Tony, they're a hybrid of Irish, Eastern European and Americana music. Unpredictable and entertaining. Sound a lot like this Trotto at times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
Asheville Jon:

enjoying for sure! even the kids are rockin out!
Avatar 2:01pm
Carmichael:

Ha, a Commodore 64.
Avatar 2:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Forgot to mention that Stenshoel also plays mandolin on several tracks.
Avatar 2:06pm
Tony Coulter:

Along with keyboards and guitar. And, of course, he's the vocalist... (But you knew that.)
  2:28pm
Dean:

A brief pedantic note: DJ Tony Coulter back-announced this album as "Strangely Colored Maps" -- which, as you can see, is wrong. Naughty DJ Tony Coulter.
Avatar 2:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes, naughty me.
Avatar 2:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Naughty mes.
  2:37pm
Dean:

I almost wrote, "DJ Tony Colter."
Avatar 2:41pm
Tony Coulter:

Actually, some branches of the Coulter clan have dropped the 'u," for greater ease of pronunciation.
  2:42pm
Dean:

Whereas both "color" and "colour" seem deviant.
  2:42pm
Dean:

In English, I mean.
Avatar 2:44pm
Carmichael:

Some members of my tribe have added a "K" for easier pronunciation, like changing CiarĂ¡n to Kieran. Or Sean to Shawn, my personal bugaboo.
Avatar 2:46pm
Carmichael:

Stenshoel is credited in this song with playing the "plastic bowling ball".
Avatar 2:56pm
Carmichael:

Thanks for all of this music, Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm
Sem:

Been an amazing show. Much obliged, Tony. See you later.
Avatar 2:56pm
Tony Coulter:

See you, Sem!
Avatar 2:57pm
Tony Coulter:

You're welcome Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm
Ike:

Have a good one, Tony and all. Thanks.
  2:58pm
Dean:

Thank you.
Avatar 2:59pm
Tony Coulter:

Damn: Just said "MapS" again. I blame Dean.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:59pm
listener james from westwood:

A true odyssey today; thanks, Tony!!
