Hey Kris. Hope you’ve switched out the cartridges and styli.
Avatar 9:56pm
Kris Holmes:

Nope
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm
Matt from New Orleans:

You play 78s with LP cartridges and styli?
Avatar 9:58pm
Kris Holmes:

Yeah since I play 78s so infrequently I'm beyond worrying these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Fair enough
Avatar 10:00pm
Kris Holmes:

I used to have a full separate 78 player but that was ages ago when I was much more serious about such things. 78s don't stay long these days.

Hi Kris and Matt and homies!

Hi Chresti

Matt from New Orleans:

JW Alexander was an important if lesser known figure in African American music
Avatar 10:07pm
Kris Holmes:

Yes, a great, long career. Pilgrim Travelers are hands down one of the most important "Quartets" that really bridged the gap from close harmony era through to the later sounds
Avatar 10:08pm
Kris Holmes:

I love that each 78 really has it's own character due to the unique surface noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Matt from New Orleans:

And your styli are definitely dropping to the bottom of the grooves and are sitting differently on each side so far.
Avatar 10:11pm
Kris Holmes:

The Ortofon styli are actually pretty heavy as a rule. So if you're gonna subject something to 78s it may as well be these.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m just happy to hear these so I don’t really care
Avatar 10:11pm
Kris Holmes:

I was happy to stumble across them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Danny would be enjoying this
Avatar 10:13pm
Kris Holmes:

Your ears get used to the surface noise lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Matt from New Orleans:

No doubt. You can add two to discogs unless I’m missing it under one of the sub names.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
chresti:

Loves the harmonies,
Avatar 10:17pm
Kris Holmes:

Probably, Discogs tends to be a bit light on 78s
Avatar 10:17pm
Kris Holmes:

Yes the harmonies are incredible, the vocal bass lines are awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Did Bumps Blackwell bring them into Specialty?
Avatar 10:20pm
Kris Holmes:

Not sure
Avatar 10:21pm
northguineahills:

worthy of Kevin Nutt's program. This is perfect. Now I was to listen to the Fisk Jubilee Singers....
Avatar 10:21pm
Kris Holmes:

Dammit

Bumped the wrong thing
Avatar 10:22pm
northguineahills:

I play 78s w/ my normal stylus and needle, but since I have maybe only a few dozen 78s, it is infrequent I play them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Did you mess up the 78 while you blaspheme while they’re singing about Jesus?
Avatar 10:23pm
Kris Holmes:

I don't know but I had to start this again
Avatar 10:33pm
Kris Holmes:

I clicked shuffle by accident is what it was. I recorded the 78s all day today & the show is using iTunes, which is obviously not my usual mode of disseminating tunes to your ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I read a book about the Golden Age of Gospel in the mid 90s when I was in high school. It was definitely a struggle to find the music back then. I started going to Sunday services when I started at Columbia not long after.
Avatar 10:34pm
Kris Holmes:

Note to self: don't click shuffle
Avatar 10:35pm
Kris Holmes:

Matt, that's cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Unless you want to shuffle
Avatar 10:36pm
Kris Holmes:

I do not
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Matt from New Orleans:

The book was quite good but it’s long OOP. How Sweet the Sound: The Golden Age of Gospel
Avatar 10:38pm
Kris Holmes:

There is a guy from back home who wrote a couple of books on classic gospel that were quite good. One about the Pilgrim Jubilees.
Avatar 10:39pm

I'm glad these Blue Notes were not taken to be destroyed on the Victrola
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm

My friend Marc in Baton Rouge has a fair number of Blue Note 78s
Avatar 10:40pm

They are super sexy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm

Avatar 10:43pm

I used to live next to a gospel church in Bed-Stuy (Brooklyn). And they would do amazing gospel music for 6 hours..... but not so awesome at 7am on a Sunday......
Avatar 10:44pm
Kris Holmes:

Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Luckily I didn’t live that close
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Matt from New Orleans:

James Moody didn’t record much as a leader for Blue Note
Avatar 10:46pm
Kris Holmes:

Is there even an LP? Or only singles?
Avatar 10:48pm
Kris Holmes:

I had tickets to see him live in NY in 2010 but he got sick & canceled :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm

I saw him a few times in the 90s/00s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

I remember I took a cab there & it was shut with tarps over all the stock, I think the roof had an issue. It reopened briefly after that again though I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm

Yeah it was erratic towards the end
Avatar 11:25pm

That shop was great but at the end it was just a graveyard where every Fats Domino 45 was interred it seemed

You're welcome Chresti, thanks for being here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I remember visiting it in the early 90s I a trip down there with the family. I bought a whole bunch of records that I later sold for far more than I paid for them when I wanted to go to Europe after my freshman year in college. It was mostly random 45s that I had read about it in Jeff Hannusch’s book.
Avatar 11:34pm
Kris Holmes:

That was the golden era for that store, the 90s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm

It must have been 1993 and I was a weird kid. Still am weird but no longer a kid.

We went down for Jazz Fest after not having visited our family that used to live here for a few years.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm

That Jazz Fest was fantastic in retrospect. The crowds weren’t like what they are now. I wandered into King Sunny Ade and had my
mind blown.
Avatar 11:49pm
Kris Holmes:

Awesome. I've never been & considering the current lineups I have little desire
Avatar 11:52pm
Kris Holmes:

But I do need to get back to NOLA, one of my favourite cities. Been too long
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It’s a shitshow. Way overcrowded. I get free tickets from my friend who’s a stage manager. Only reason I show up. The food is excellent and as long as I can find some acts on the smaller stages that I’m into I go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm

Thanks Kris. Lots of good stuff tonight.
