That's the odds of it being played on the same day in any given year, I think. For precisely five years ago, I don't know exactly how you adjust. I guess it could be as simple as multiplying by 1/[(years of existing playlists) - 5], but that seems like it would be too easy.

Speaking of the Smiths, I've been listening to an audiobook called "Sigh, Gone" by Phuc Tran, about an immigrant growing up in the 80s in Pennsyltucky and getting into punk rock, skateboarding, literature, and then the Smiths, even though at first the punk boys think the Smiths are just for goth girls. It's a great memoir so far.

Dean:

That's what went through my mind, too, Handy. But I'm not sure the five year factor changes the analysis. For example, we're not asking the odds of the same song, same day, five years in a row. Rather, we're asking the odds of, say, a coin landing heads or tails on the fifth flip, which is still 1/2. Which tells me I've left out a very important factor, namely, the odds of the song being played at all on any given day. That should be roughly [average no. of songs played per day on WFMU]/[average daily supply of songs in WFMU library]. Call this s/L. The answer to Mary's query, then, is:

s/L*365.25

Now, what are the odds that I'm full of shit?

Dean:

I watched a bio doc about Arthur "Killer" Kane on the weekend. I don't watch movies much, but a buddy recommended it. Was really good. And I was surprised to find admiration for Morrissey in my heart. He'd pushed for a New York Dolls reunion in 2004.

I had to think about *that*, too, Handy. Suppose WFMU plays 10 songs on average a day and that the library consists of 100 tracks. Then the odds of a track being played on any day are 10/100 or 1/10.

Phillippe Bastille:

Is there an x factor in the whole discussion of the number of times the song gets played overall, thus increasing the likelihood that it will be played on the same exact day 5 years apart? Or is it like the fact that the odds of flipping 5 tails in a row is 64/1 before the first flip but only 2/1 after the first 4 successful flips?

Phillippe Bastille:

@NGH DiL would totally agree with you

Handy Haversack:

And do we have to factor in Scott W's new "WFMU Hit List" feature to have any hope with the maths at all?

hello! sorry I'm late

Phillippe Bastille:

I think we need to factor in anything Scott does in respect to his devotion to the station during covid. Then we can forget about it when stuff gets back to normal
Avatar 🛎 Swag For Life Member 2:20pm
Phillippe Bastille:

*to respect

Dean:

The odds of flipping a tail, using a good coin, are always 1/2. But you're right, Phillippe, if you're implying that playlists are not "good" in the way a coin should be. I think you mean 1/32, btw. 2^5, right?

*maybe that edit wasn't right either...

Phillippe, yes, it’s the ‘s’ that’s rightly migrated from ‘sport’.

There is an audio clip from a movie in this Ritas version, can anyone identify it? Listen closely, please; I'm guessing it is an old British movie.
