In the late 90s I went to a presentation by George Martin, he said that when he first started in the business that they used a weight system to record directly to the record. Basically a weight that would slowly drop from the ceiling, powering the recording device's spin. since in those days gravity was more stable and steady than any mechanical means for turning a record.
