Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
Hiya, Pauly from Clifton. Hi, chresti! Good evening, medson. Hi, Ken From Hyde Park. Hey, Photocopy Cha Cha 2000! Enjoying the sunset too, Handy Haversack! Heya, Carmichael.
@8:06 Handy Haversack: ditto! How are you doing tonight?
@8:09 Linda Lee: hey there! Are you alright house-wise nowadays, I mean weren't you superbusy selling your place etc.?
looks like we're closing on friday ~ so i'm busy sorting & cleaning. in a fine mood ~ i've been working toward this for 2 years now. release from the project will be sweet.
:-)
one of very many beautiful things about growing up in the 60s. that voice was everywhere.
happy belated birthday from this corner too! have a fabulous year! :-)
Thanks for the wishes, Linda Lee! Bing a kid and hearing the adult pop of Dionne/Burt/Hal allowed me to figure out that growing up wouldn't be so foreign and mysterious.
My favorite pop song is probably Bacharach's "Mexican Divorce" as arranged and performed by him on his eponymous album with, I think, Cissy Houston (or perhaps an unnamed singer) doing the vocals. But The Drifters recorded it earlier, and Dionne was one of the backing singers along with Cissy, and that's where he discovered her.
ho! DJ Georgy Girl & i talk about this all the time ~ certain songs that gave us a delicious preview of adult life, fascinating pictures. Pet Clark did a few of those. :-)
@8:14 Handy Haversack: swimming every day. Hopefully for a month more or so. The lake I go now to is 10 miles away but no complaints, very few people there, water's clean and it's safe and serene, unlike the nearest beach, which seems to attract young vandals, who don't mind the security cameras...
@Linda Lee: I recall that you and I are about the same age, but yes, that is exactly also what I feel about Dionne/Burt and Pet Clark/Tony Hatch. If being an adult was being reflected in those songs, I'm ready.
Cha Cha, we got out of town last weekend, and our friends knew a swimming hole in a local creek, which was excellent -- though I did look up to see a snake about 15 cm from my face at one point, which led to a sustained bout of wading until I got my heart rate to get over it.
@Linda Lee ~ Charmed to see a post from you. I think of my childhood listening to the transistor radio & our fondness of The Stones when I see your name.
@8:27 Handy Haversack: sounds scary - I am glad the only venomous snakes we have here are the adders, the bites of which won't kill you unless you are vulnerable (like small kids or the elderly and allergic) or very unlucky - a visit to the doctor has to be made of course after a bite but...

Dean:
My radio looked much like this: https://img1.etsystatic.com/000/0/6138107/il_fullxfull.232232927.jpg At night it was under my pillow at low volume. It was an education akin to nothing the internet can hope to achieve.
Born Nov.'63 - with a brother about nine years older. Right away records found their way in - but I wish I could visit my toddlerhood & hear what was on the radio then! The Beatles' cartoon show had me - & this tar is 1st grade with Yellow Sub lunchbox! & I've been adrift in the odyssey of Music's oceans ever since...
8:51pm
phat:
Fitting my mood. Missed the first part while talking to my dad again.
what's your age difference, chresti? did you help him discover what music was all about?
8:54pm
Dean:
Even then I wasn't into branding. My lunchbox was a generic Scotch plaid, and I never wanted one associated with third-party operations. And so it goes to this day. I oppose bumper stickers, hashtags, and branded t-shirts, with one huge exception: I routinely and proudly wear WFMU t-shirts.
i still have my Jungle Book lunchbox. the Thermos is long since broken, though. wish i still had my orange Panasonic ball radio. first heard The Stylistics on that radio.
We're 3 1/2 years apart, and I influenced his taste somewhat, LL. My older brother, when he was still around, always had music playing on the family portable record player.
@8:54 Gaylord Fields: I wonder where my "little chemist" set (or something like that) is - also a microscope plus small vials with liquids the content of I have no idea of. I have heard that sometimes there were pretty toxic stuff there(this wouldn't be possible nowadays for sure) so very good I never tasted them - unlike that leaking alkaline battery as a 6 year old (I survived but oh boy did it taste bitter and did I scream or what)
If David Lynch doesn't know this Program he does need to be informed.
Or perhaps rather Gaylord needs to be installed as a Director.
Yarborough invokes another great cartoon - The Hobbit.
Cheese sandwich, mustard, and carrots. Once my mom gave me...what?!...dessert. It was a plastic-wrapped slice of cherry pie. (Get your minds out of the gutter, you slobs.) I took a couple bites and found it a bit chewy. Then I observed that the pie was supported by a slice of cardboard I'd been consuming. Because my mom never gave me processed foods--except for the Velveeta--I was not prepared for the pie.
i *disinctly* remember a pretty awful smell & taste to my thermos milk. i don't think the adults in the house realilzed thermoses needed regularly cleaning.
this is why i have six eyes now.
wow. we're glad too. so many amazing things to be seen.
9:15pm
CC:
Hi Gina... sorry I missed your show yesterday but I had to go to Walmart and buy a toaster oven...it was an absolute fricking drag!!!...happy birthday!!!...:)
Yes, Joan Baez and Billie Holiday were also on regular rotation.

wendy del formaggio:
Gaylord! I’m better late than never. Happy birthday to you!
And in Psychic DJ Connection news, so far just one band we’re both playing this week: Saint Etienne. But it’s kinda cheating because I learned them from listening to you.
my mother wasn't at home very much when i was growing up, as she persued a career ~ but my father was generally at home & he went for Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash & Chet Atkins.
funny, this Temps side reminds me most of rediscovering our 'childhood' Motown in the early 80s. beautiful dance parties throughout the city that went on all night long.
I read somewhere that the Temptations were against 'Beauty' being a single. I forget what they were allegedly campaigning for instead but were overruled by BG
@CC: It's not a rerun. It's 100% new, just prerecorded yesterday. Only I have heard this show before. I do all my shows that way since the station lockdown, as do several other WFMU DJs.
chresti ~ oh sure. i remember preferring ballet slippers, really, or those cheap chinese worker's slippers that went for about a dollar on canal street. always black with brown soles. to go clubbing though, ...
9:31pm
CC:
That's really a good way to do it because now you can focus on the chat board instead of worrying about playing records!!!...:)
yes. the great thing was, you could get those vintage dresses for nearly nothing in thrift stores ~ even outdoor flea markets pretty common then. fantastic styles, beautiful fabrics.
@Gaylord - Happy Birthday! I've always meant to ask you, are you related to Magnetic? You have the same last name and both have discerning tastes. Just a shot in the dark!
That's sad. My sympathies to you and Franco. This is what aging means. If you're fortunate enough to age, you'll have to endure the loss of those who aren't.
@Gordon FM: Yup. I was freelancing at TONY ca. 1995 when I was simultaneously offered a FT job both there and at Spin. I chose the latter, but I still wrote reviews for TONY for several years afterward.
@Gaylord - Oh yeah! I can see your name in italics now! I just never made the connection for some reason. Silly me. I once drove next to Bob Guccione Jr on the Merritt Parkway. So there you have it. It all ties together.
here's a gentleman i was fortunate to hear sing in person at the old Lone Star Cafe' in New York. i sat directly in front of the stage. what a voice to experience live. just .. transporting.
This library nerd went to return cd's to the collection box just a while ago but the music did not stop while I was away. Back home to say thanks for these two amazing hours. Good night everyone!
@Carmichael @chresti @Uncle Michael @Joe B @bigplanetnoise @Revolution Rabbit Nov63 @Jinx @radioronan @Handy Haversack @CC @HexFamChan @Gina Bacon @Photocopy Cha Cha 2000 @Pauly from Clifton: Thank you in turn!
Happy birthday all who are completing another solar revolution. Happy to have the party archived as a gift of Gaylord Fields curated sounds for my listening pleasure. Thank you.
Hectic day, so I stopped listening a couple times, went back to relisten to parts when work took precedence. Wrapping up while on a break. All beautiful music. Pretty somber for a birthday house. Some introspection. Thank you.
