It's near impossible for me to keep up with the tracklist changes in real time, as everything is collaged together and some bits are very short -- but I'm doing my best!

Damn, I listened to Beethoven's 5th just before this show!
Avatar 12:34pm
Tony Coulter:

By the way, today's LP under the cassettes is El Chicano's "Celebration," which, truthfully, I'm about to get rid of: rateyourmusic.com...
  12:36pm
Dean:

Couldn't figure it out. Thought it might have been one of the numberless recordings of Handel's Royal Fireworks Music.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Yvang:

Or a field recording of fireworks...
  12:43pm
Dean:

That would be terrific. Did the Environments series include one of those?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
Yvang:

I want it combined with hunting season opening and storms
Avatar 12:45pm
Tony Coulter:

How about field recordings of noisy neighbors? (I guess "Shut Up, Little Man!" was sort of that).
Avatar 12:46pm
Tony Coulter:

The Ah Nahm track just began a minute or so ago -- jumped the gun, tracklist-wise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm

Tony! Mhissters! Shissters! And so on.

Greets, all.

"Shut Up, Little Man!" : One of those many things I would have never heard of without WFMU (I guess it was mentionned in a post on the great "beware of the blog").

i have several recordings of fireworks. one from amongst the masses going ooh and ahhh and others from various distances.
and many recordings of neighbors both noisy and not noisy.
some pretty violent ones. hard to listen to.

What's the best way to record a neighbor?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm

Through the bathroom pipes, probably.

Tony Coulter:

And here's your fireworks!
  1:04pm

...and the neighbors!
  1:04pm

Among my neighbors are the denizens of a funeral home. They're very quiet, almost to a fault.
Avatar 1:04pm

UGh babies crying are the worst
  1:05pm

No, POTUSs crying are worse.
Avatar 1:05pm

Upside of living in a building with cement is that you can't hear your neighbors, downside is that you can't record them discreetly.

i've mostly used a zoom h4n but i used to use ancient microphones from an old reel-to-reel my older brother salvaged in the 1960s -directly into a cassette deck. i was amazed at what they picked up...things i wasn't hearing.
a freight train over a mile away; bits of conversation within a yard party almost a block away...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
Yvang:

I like a thoughful playlist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
coelacanth∅:

haha i muted the sound for the crying baby!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
Yvang:

I think dogs barking are worse than babies crying except when they reach the high frequencies that reach the nerves as well.
Avatar 1:12pm
Tony Coulter:

Catfights jangle my nerves the most -- maybe because I'm always worried my outdoor/indoor cat could be involved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
Rob W:

We have an air shaft that would have been a great place for mic'ing the upstairs neighbors, who used to have some pretty over-the-top fights, I never did that. Though I did just backyard-flower-pot-mic some nice thunderstorms at my mother-in-law's place in Michigan! Would sound nice with Nicolas Collins, come to think of it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
coelacanth∅:

i like when a dog's bark is like a steam locomotive when it's first starting up
...really low and slow; like a lump of bass

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
coelacanth∅:

Sonderangebot i've never used external mics with it. (or maybe once or twice?)
- i've mastered very little of what it's capable of -partly because i've never thought i needed more than a simple stereo recording, and partly because i can't wrap my head around 1/2 of it!
...maybe i can help you with simple things -settings or techniques?
-i wouldn't call myself a master either though.
Avatar 1:41pm

@Tony: Aye, it used to be at Open Air in St Mark's, now it's at the Can Factory (well before the pandemic) @ the Can Factory on 3rd St & 3rd Ave in Brooklyn. There was also a sojourn at Roulette when it was still in Manhattan. They do interconnected collabs across the sister parties around the world (some two dozen, at last count), from Tokyo-Istanbul-Glasgow-SF, and all points in between. See: share.dj

@Dean: well, it was B/tn A & 1st. so, a 6 minute walk to Cooper Union (one of my best friends from HS got a Lichtenstein scholarship to Cooper Union, odd, since we both came from the same podunk suburb in FL).
